I've had the laptop for awhile now, but for some reason, it doesn't want to upgrade to windows 7. Not that i don't mind using vista, but it would be nice for an upgrade. Is there anything I can do?
I've had this computer for about 2 years and the speakers are terrible on it and I have had to swap out the hard drives twice so far... The overheating hasn't been an issue for me yet so far. Good laptop overall.
I've had the updated version of this laptop for a little over a year now. I have gone through 3 hard drives and soon to be two screen frames. The screen frame constantly brakes at the hinges, causing it to be unstable and wobbly. The only goof thing about this laptop is the keyboard. I wish I got an iMac instead.
I am watching this because i would like to get this laptop for christmas and i was wandering if the battery comes with the bump on the back because i looked up the Dell Studio Laptop on other sites and it didnt have that on the battery. Do you have to order that separatly?
HI BTW the button on the opposite side of the screen (adjacent to the power) switch is actually the wirless roaming button. Its peculiar because its job is simply to find wifi availability in the area and nothing more, comes attached with the back cover. I see this is needless you can do the same on the scree.

@smartdon007 You shouldn't really empty it and charge to full again over and over. You're best off having it plugged in as often as possible and then doing a full cycle like once a month or so just to re-calibrate it, otherwise it can really hurt the life of the battery when you keep cycling it every time you use it. Granted it differs from battery to battery, so check the manual, but in general that's the best practice. Maybe look for some calibration software.

You people out there need 2 STOP buying from merchants who have weak product support/bad return policy. You only give them more power. They care only about money that$ American way anything else Un-American.. Used to be thought of as a dummy if you bought an xtended warranty. Not anymore. EHD's (xternal h.d.s) are notorious for crashing in 1st year of use. You need to always check policy FAQ before you buy cause GUARANTEED you will have small-large issues with many new tech devices.
Shoppers who prefer to shop at a store that has the best return policy never shop at Best Buy. They have a 14 day return policy thats why. Think about it: for some a computer is as important as their car and they can be expensive ya know. A 14 day return policy is unacceptable and I stay FAR AWAY from stores with 14 day return policy. Today is 2.5.2010 and I bought an HP laptop on 10.30.2009 and Ill be taking it back in late March of 2010 because I cant live with it. Caveat emptor.
That is a point well taken on the 14 day return policy from Best Buy. After seeing the issues with the hard drive I think I will purchase a HP dv6 with the i5 Intel and 500GB hard drive from Sams Club. Their warranty which is 3 years AFTER the end of the manufacturers 1 year warranty is only $79.99. This makes it a 4 year warranty. The Best Buy warranty is $299 for a total of 3 years.
I want to purchase the Studio 15 from Best Buy that has the intel i5 processor and 500GB hard drive. I have found that Dell configured this model with 58GB on drive C and 400 on drive D. The operating system is on drive C. I spoke with Dell and was informed this is the current way they are configuring laptops. Strange. They recommend saving any programs you install after the initial purchase on the D drive. Has this been an issue for anyone?

You need to check how much ram you have and how many programs you have running when the laptop boots up. Overtime programs you install start slowing down the laptop at boot because too many of them run in the background. I hope this helped you out.

There are no stupid questions, If you get the i7 processor, it will give you plenty of power but don't forget that you need a good video card also to make the games run. Don't forget to get at least 4GB of ram. Hope this helped you out, Best of luck.

Hi, you seem to have a lot of experience with this laptop, There is one problem with mine. I am having a problem with the indicator lights, the caps lock indicator and the Hard drive activity lights are not available. They are both really good but the difference is that the studio 15 is a 15" screen and the XPS 13 is a 13" which makes it for me more of a nice high end netbook. It all comes down to what do your need 15" or 13" which is smaller to carry around. Best of luck.
For me, I did high end gaming on the sxps 13 in the summer for a few hours and it crashed, I have a heating pad now, I guess if it's hot and you use it for a while it might crash to protect itself.
The Studio 15 now has Core i7, and can do blue ray and more advanced graphics, like Radeon 4570.
Plus yes, I will admit that a little bigger screen and more graphics would be nice.
Heh must be the highest end netbook ever, I can play Dead Space pretty well.
Here in India the dell guys are giving 4gb RAM with the std 15, and a 500gb hard disk. For around $1000. It's a special offer because of the college admissions. Our college is providing HP laptops with a little drop down configuration but I had seen the studio 17 with one of my friends and thought would buy that. Now I see this studio 15 with special college edition features at a cheaper cost. Competition is really good

Has the current version of Studio 15 still the backlit keyboard? I cant find it in the website and it would be the last spec to convince myself and buy it. Thanks for this good review

the backlit keyboard is an option. i got it on mine. you can get it by customizing your laptop

thanks for the info but currently they dont give you the option to customize the keyboard, at least in the Studio15, I think you can in the XPS.

i just bought one of these. the 17 inch was the same price, but imo didnt have the perks i wanted.
i got it because im going to university this year. and i mainly got the 15 over the 17 because i think 17 will be too big to take into lectures. plus the 17 didnt have as many options

well man.i have this laptop in the 17inch.its a class laptop however its not running fast enough for my liking a tall.its particularly slow on start up.what advice would you give me?

You need to check how much ram you have and how many programs you have running when the laptop boots up. Overtime programs you install start slowing down the laptop at boot because too many of them run in the background. I hope this helped you out.

Well it is not always a downgrade. There are many programs that do not run on Windows 7 so you might need to go back to xp to get everything to run.

I'm *thinking* of getting the Dell Studio 15 with the customisable cover;
with Win7 64bit, i7 proccesor would it be a very fast laptop suitable for playing intensive games like Rollercoaster tycoon 3 ? lol sorry if the question sounds a bit stupid :S

There are no stupid questions, If you get the i7 processor, it will give you plenty of power but don't forget that you need a good video card also to make the games run. Don't forget to get at least 4GB of ram. Hope this helped you out, Best of luck.

yo my mic is not working on xp i installed xp but it is not working is that driver probllem but i have a different studio 15 i have the one with the fingerprint

Hi, you seem to have a lot of experience with this laptop, There is one problem with mine. I am having a problem with the indicator lights, the caps lock indicator and the Hard drive activity lights are not available. I am wondering if you can turn it on in th BIoS but I don't have any idea with that. So that would be a great help if yo could help. Thanks.

They are both really good but the difference is that the studio 15 is a 15" screen and the XPS 13 is a 13" which makes it for me more of a nice high end netbook. It all comes down to what do your need 15" or 13" which is smaller to carry around. Best of luck.

yes..if the screen size was same then there would have been no cause for confusion.
But given the fact that i am a movie buff and love listening to music all the time..which one will you advice?
on one side 15" and on the other side geforce 9500m...this is becoming really hard.
And as i asked...does any of these 2 have heating or noise issues?

dont go with dell im telling u with expirience go with hp or asus if u want to go with dell go for the xps 13

For me, I did high end gaming on the sxps 13 in the summer for a few hours and it crashed, I have a heating pad now, I guess if it's hot and you use it for a while it might crash to protect itself.
The Studio 15 now has Core i7, and can do blue ray and more advanced graphics, like Radeon 4570.
Plus yes, I will admit that a little bigger screen and more graphics would be nice.
Heh must be the highest end netbook ever, I can play Dead Space pretty well.

Here in India the dell guys are giving 4gb RAM with the std 15, and a 500gb hard disk. For around $1000. It's a special offer because of the college admissions. Our college is providing HP laptops with a little drop down configuration but I had seen the studio 17 with one of my friends and thought would buy that. Now I see this studio 15 with special college edition features at a cheaper cost. Competition is really good

You won't have any problems with the drivers, in fact it might just work better with the windows 7 edition. Windows7 runs the same core as vista so the drivers are compatible. Best of luck.
