John Kay's seen chewing gum right after he sings "I like to dream, mmmmm hmmmm yes, yes, Right between the sound machine..." I would venture to say that this 67 year old falls somewhere in the bad ass category.

@koolinturn I know what you mean, watching this kind of songs being played nowadays is like watching Kiss without the make up or Elvis without his quiff
I saw Steppenwolf headline in 1972 at a Ice Arena in Illinois, RUSH was filling in for Canned Heat. RUSH ATE the show alive. I enjoyed John Kay's show, but honestly Rush played their entire first album that night and I was paralyzed by their performance.

why are comments about justin beiber in this fucking video? dont u idiots realize that talking about or remotely mentioning his name makes him more popular?
thats why that fag makes more money than any of u haters
Met John and the Band at the Chestnut Cabaret in Philly in the 1980's. The show was fabulous and the Band was very sociable with their audience. Have seen them perform many times since. SD&R&R. I will be a Fan Forever!
Deal!!! Douche bag or not I do love his music, that is why he "was" an idol of mine and why the opportunity to open for him (even if it was past his prime) was such a milestone for me and my band. It was just sad to see how unappreciative he is:-(
And you are also most likely gay, but what does that have to do with my substancial grasp of the English language? Oh, you don't speak English, so you wouldn't know would you. Suck my beer can size dick.
This performance is good, but John Kay is a fucking prick. He is such a douche bag it is rediculous. A band I was in at the time played a festival with Steppenwolf and a few other notables. I was totally turned off by how he "big timed" everyone. He was a complete asshole. He forgets that Steppenwolf has not had a single on the charts in over 25 years... I still cringe everytime we cover Born to Wild. I hate this guy. He and John Mellancamp should brothers.

@GloveDoesntFit Ooops, that was Deep Purple. I guess I gave Kay too much credit. Now he has 1 hit less than Justin Beiber. Thanks for helping me make my point. I am personal friends with a lot of folks in the music industry, most of which are quite humble and approachable off stage. They will tell you that erogance will kill your career. Take a band like Steppenwolff who is in its twilight and you need all the help you can get, so don't piss on the ones that put food on your table.
@NTR2DR Haha. I like him for the way he acts in front of a mic. When the microphone isn't on, I really don't care what he does. His lack of great songs is what keeps him from still being big, not how he acts off stage. I'm sure if Paul McCartney wasn't nice, he could still sell out any tour he put his name on. It's "Bieber", by the way. hahah
@GloveDoesntFit Goes to show how much I care about "Beiber or Bieber" or whatever his name is. As a fellow musician that idolized many like Kay coming up, it is quite disheartening to finaily get the oportunity to open for the guy just for you to realize what kind of douche bag he is. I don't care for what he does on stage because it is not sincere... that is first hand knowledge. Sorry to burst your bubble, but all he did was complain about having to perform outside in the heat. It was 75f.

U right! If ZZ Top is in the Hall with uh, any? hits these guys sure as hell should be. I'm from Houston, by the way, and the flea-bitten beards the boys still wear are a LITTLE excentric. Love the organ work. Saw these boys in 69/70? The venue acoustics or soundboard weren't suitable so the vocals bombed but the instrumentals still made it a great day. Knew an audiophile who used to tune his car stereo to MCR.

I always wished there was an available 8 or 9 minute version of this classic. There ssems to be alot of room for improvising in the middle of the song. But this is the next best thing. At 1:07, Kay says "Flies far, goes near". In the studion version, it's the other way around "Goes far, flies near". I guess he wanted to change things around a little bit after 40 years.
I saw an interview with John Kay a number of years ago......he is a very shrewd business man. All considering, this being a live performance, his age etc....To me he is about at a solid 90% of how he sounded in his hey day. There are plenty of famous ageing rockers that don't sound as good as he does
