Was Highland Appliance the store that ran a commerical about a new employee having to open the store doors on the day after thanksgiving? There was a mob of people outside, and the employee who opened the doors the previous year was in a body cast.
Oh man...Highland, Ollie Fretter and Sonny Elliot the weatherman. Slap on the Ghoul, Sir Graves and Bill Kennedy and you have most of my childhood TV memories right there!
Well, he ruled Saturday afternoons! Cartoons first ("Super Friends", "Scooby Doo" and "Plastic Man" were pretty high on that list) then a short wait till Sir Graves appeared. "Happy Haunting! Nya-ha-ha-ha-ha-hah!" Gods, I remember the thrill when my mother explained to me how they did "The Blob" segments, and though he never read my letter on screen, he DID read the letter of a kid I knew. Also, I should have included "Bozo the Clown" among my Childhood TV Memories!
This commercial is absolutely out of my childhood. I think there was another Highland commercial - does anyone remember - two cars, one brand new, one a junker, but both with the same sound system. I think they used a song from Tin Lizzie.
Thank you so much for posting this. You are my hero!!!! I grew up in Windsor in the 80's and between this and the Detroit Zoo one they are both embedded in my brain.
Thanks for posting this! This commercial comes to mind every time I hear that tune - which is one of the alarm sounds on a machine at work. Now I can share it with my co-workers who are (ahem) too young to remember it.
Great retro commercial! Highland commercials were the coolest back in the day. Looks like even back then kids were smart at using technology to cheat.
Dude, you are my hero for posting this! I've had this commercial on my mind for years but never even tried to search for it because I couldn't even recall who the sponsor was or exactly what was being advertised - stereo equipment? recording tape? - let alone any brand names.
So many years later, I can't hear "Für Elise" and NOT bust out with "Jonathan can't come out and play right now...he's practicing the piano." It's Pavlovian, and even my wife didn't understand it until she finally got to see this ad. Still have quite a few of my stereo components from Highland, too!
Thank you for commenting what the name of the tune is. I never knew the name, since they don't really teach it in the classes I took. I only knew it by my own name.."the song the kid played in the highland appliance commercial"
that dude is prolly a serial killer with a over-demanding mother that wont let her boy go out and play.
