It's so sad that Lon has gone unappreciative! I LOVE him! I try to show my friends who he is. Then when I talk about him, they'll know who I'm talking about. Some don't even like him! *GASP!* He's the best of the best! So is Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin. Silent films are awesome!!! :)
great show, your acolades mirror mine...and 'slant six? you mus be a chrysl fan, either the 170 or 225, lol, i ran an automotive antique resto shop for years, mostly 1915s to 1940s, but also did modern, hence the slant 6 well known, that engine had most massive crankshaft of any six, except the hercules engines...again nice video and commentary on my fav actor..you picked up what i did...raised by deaf mutes..perfect talents for silent films...good luck...CODYJ
I.M.O. he was the best (sorry Spencer Tracey fans) and to have Peter Sellers-Vanessa Redgrave and Gary Oldman as admirers...Well that say's it all for me
I hear that Lon Chaney's Great grandson did make a movie with him in it and another man I cant recall now but , he is the mad doctor in it. It is called I belive the house of the wolfman. I suppose it is on dvd now, not sure though . It is made in black and white for the classic look , it has a trailer to it so might look it up if you want to see it. His great grandson says that Lon Chaney 's son didnt get the recongniton he deserved in his lifetime and has never received a star in hollywood
Sid Terror discovered it back in 1988. He found it under the title the hypnotist. He made sure it was also named London After Midnight in the vault so someone could find it. He held the film in his hands. He saw the opening title and a still of Lon Chaney. It is still out there.

This info needs to be given to someone with the power to go back into the vault and take it. Soon enough it truly will fall apart.
Such a beautiful man inside and out, he was born to play the magnificient characters created with his own hands. No one will ever match a talent like him.
HCShannon: Yes, I am quite aware of that fact. His grandparents founded the Colorado Springs Institute for the Deaf and Blind. Lon used to use pantomime to communicate to his parents what went on in town during the day. This experiance, and vaudeville, served him well in silent film.
Love Chaney. discovered him as a kid and raised myself on his films, thanx to Forry Ackerman and his mag Famous Monsters of Filmland. There's a very good doc available from Turner Classics titles Lon Chaney: A Thousand Faces that would be a good companion to this one. Long Live Lon!!!
Lon Chaney was probably the greatest actor of the silent era. I know that at one point he was the highest paid. His genius at pantomime and makeup were unequaled. No actor today would go through what he did to make his performances believable. He shall live forever in cinema history.
Thanks for making this and posting it! He is MY FAVE actor and the GREATEST actor ever! EVER!!!! I cannot believe many people don't know of him nor give him the respect he rightfully deserves!
He and his son were amazing actors! And the fact he applied the make-up for his movies himself demands even more respect. RIP Lon Chaney. Never had a man like you and probably never will.
From an actor's point of view, If you forget the makeup and the iconic characters he played, he was a tremendous actor of unbelievable depth. Forget about the "Method" form of acting, watch Lon Chaney and you'll learn something about the Art of being a good actor. Let's face it, the man could say more with his eyes and a simple gesture, than any of the so called "stars" of today!
For such a great actor appearing in over 150 films, and pioneering makeup techniques to have only one small theater in his hometown that very few people know about in a decaying building that is on the brink of being torn down should say something. He may not be under appreciated everywhere, but as Dassanowsky says, there should be a boulevard named after him in Colorado Springs.
I must point out one inaccuracy depicted in your wonderful film: I never portrayed The Wolfman. The role was performed by my son, Creighton, who entered show business against my wishes. And he did a wonderful job with the part.
An amazing actor, his old pictures still give me the creeps.

@Slantsixx Actually, Lon's son was the one who played the original Wolfman, I guess people don't use the terms Sr. and Jr. anymore.

@geinman1287 Of course both his parents were deaf, so he mastered non-verbal communication at an early age!

DECADES before his time, the man was simply a genius. Not only did he create modern horror make-up, but he had supreme acting skills.
The make-up make him look horrifying. It's the acting that made HIM horrifying to watch.
Great post!

Actually, at 4:00, you show the Wolfman alone. This might lead some viewers to believe LCSr played this character.

I don't know if I'd consider Mr. Chaney Sr. underappreciated - I mean, some of his movie roles are icons of the early cinema.
