This video isn't creepy/weird at all. Its an abstract view on our daily lives. Although, if you're a child, many of the events in this vid deal with a more adult nature such as getting up and going to work and going to a bar for a drink after work. My guess is the mirror was the gateway to his inner self where he questioned himself not even knowing who he was.
@ptrLeGrand i don't want to sound all weird but i think it's showing life and how you hide in a "mask", aka-a different personality to appeal to others-i guess.
@frostymintofdeath I saw this when I was a kid... and being 27 now it is STILL creepy as hell. And Frostymintofdeath... That part messed with me too. AND the part with the eyes... just way too insane for a kid.
@RyuxChan Yeah, I think this is a very cynical and bitter take on what happens to us and our "identity" as we interact with people. Each person the clay man interacts with keeps changing him, either shoving masks on his face, prodding his face into different shapes, smearing his lips and eyes and cheeks with all kinds of gunk, and he even distorts his own face to please people around him (like when he turns into the Mickey-Mouse-clown thing).
This sort of shit you should watch after a few spliffs ... Remember having this on vhs as a kid a long with the sledgehammer video and the old bloke telling stories and the NEXT! Segment ... Good ol' times
@cheetahcc I too used to have this on vhs as a kid, but couldn't find it! This is from the Aardman Classics DVD which I had later bought. It's got all the other shorts from the vhs that I could remember too :)
Its defintely a contrast between the real world and imagination. The maze is a metaphor for this never ending cycle of being trapped in the type of life that leads to no-where, and no matter how much you try to escape it always leads to something worse. The mirror is a metaphor for change in mindset. People 'look at themselves in the mirror' and are hit by sudden realisation that they must change. The mirror also represents opportunity and if one arises take it, it maybe lead to something better
@4cunmat The real world is the maze and only thinking out of the box will get you somewhere else .The funny thing is you are then confrontated with your own likeness ... its starts of good and then the conflicts begin, again???
That may be the funniest animation that they've ever done. I almost laughed when I see the claymation. ^_^ Thank you, Aardman! You made this the funniest animation that you'll see on television or on YouTube.
I first saw this on an Aardman VHS when I was about 10...along with "Next" and a few other odd things...nedless to say I had absolutely NO IDEA what was going on lol
AYEH-AYEH-AYEH-AYEH-AYEH-AYEH-AYEH-AYEH-AYEH-AYEH-AYEH-ME ME ME YA YOU YOU YOU JAAAAAA MO JAAAAAA (Babble) Jezzes. Jezzes? Jezzes. Jez ezz. Ezzee? Jezzes? Ezzee? Yes. Ezzee? YES. What jezz? Aw woo. Jezz, woo. Jezz woo. NAAAAAHHHHHHH
@mackoonac It's a symbol for everyday life, trapped in the same routine. It takes themes such as domestic abuse, alcoholism and stress and shows them in an abstract way. It's a disturbing idea of what life is becoming: an endless cycle, a cog in the system.
I had this on Ardman Animations video, i used to watch it alot when i was little, i always found this piece really creepy though, At the same time its very clever"
i had the video aswell, it aslo had a wierd Shakespeare parody and a musiv video to Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer and Robert Parker's Barefootin' it was such a good video
It's really a philosophical statement about how the character alters his personality to fit his surroundings, but is inevitably, more fundamentally altered himself. The clown mask represents this persona he hides behind, but he begins to look more and more like the mask as it changes his underlying peronality. Finally, he finds inner peace in his own skin, but on meeting another who is similar, cannot help but try to alter them; a grim commentary on humanity's intolerance
"The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man."
@ThunderHeads69 I Interpret the ending to be, he finds a quiet spot outside the rat race of everyday life, it's enjoyable at first but after a while he starts fighting with himself? like, he finds he can't stand his own company?
@ThunderHeads69 Wow that's a very good explanation! It all makes sense now I was always extremely confused about this film when I was younger (up until 25 seconds ago actually lol!).
My parents work for Aardmans, and I've always always had this in the back of my memory - only found out what it was called the other day. It's so disturbing... the 'mime artist' look I've been drawing all day... bloody wierd, but I appreciate it now.
I totally agree with you. My parents bought an old Aardman video when I was younger, me and my sister watched Ident and thought "What the hell is this?!" But it's like Picasso's art in stop motion. Genius!
this clip is supposed to be someone so caught up in the world that he can't seem to find himself. as a result, he tries to be everyone else, which ruins him. in the end, he finds the only way toe scape is to be himself. which ends up not even working out apparently. one of my favorite aardman clips.

Excellent animation, and story. I remember seeing this about 13 years ago. Am I right in thinking this was about the British working man's life and inability to escape?
