  • P 7815u FX is much better 500GB memory 4GB ram and comes with a 9800m GTS all for under 800$

  • @Ri1seAgainst,

Yup... of course this review is almost 2 years old. :)

    .

    Peace,

    Fr. Robert

  • @gadgettts ah just noticed however the P 7815u FX I'm finding is impossible to get only place I can find to get it is online at circuitcity/com a close store chain now selling from their warehouse I mean I can even buy it directly from Gateway/com

  • @Ri1seAgainst If you are still looking for the p7815u, HSN has it right now for $599.90.

  • Nice review. I got the old version P-6831 FX; which came with (Best Buy Canada): - Intel T5450 - 1.67 GHz processor - Samsung 3 GB RAM - nVidia 8800 GTS 512 MB VRAM - Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit Ended up upgrading it to: - Intel T8100 2.1 GHz - 4 GB RAM - Windows 7 Pro 64-bit Upgrade went smoothly and Win 7 recognized everything and installed drivers that work - sound isn't as crisp as the original but its due to poor sound drivers. Media & volume control work. Peace. EM
  • EM,

Thanks for the post. It's good to hear from the people in the field who are using the gear in the real-world. (I would LOVE for them to let me keep the gear so that I could test it over it's lifetime... but then that might color my impression of the gear I review.)

    .

In any case... thanks for letting us know about your experience.

    .

    Peace,

    Fr. Robert

  • wow what

  • There is something seriously wrong with the keyboard at 1:52, is it just me or is that an inexcusable build fault.

  • hey umm my p7811 just started making clicking noises yesterday, I've had it for about a half year and it clicks a bunch of times like every 2 mins

  • cyberpowerpc has some good laptop deals to

  • Gateway has gone under and no longer support their warrenty. Do NOT buy!

Please reseach this company and don't get screwed over.

  • mathers3000,

Perhaps you shed more light on the subject...

Gateway was split into two parts in 2007. Acer bought the consumer division and MPC bought the professional unit. (The one that serves schools, businesses, government, etc.)

MPC has filed for bankruptcy. As far as I know, Acer is still the #2 computer company in the world.

    .

    Peace,

    Fr. Robert

  • Acer customer service is the worst I've ever worked with. They deliberately lie and give out MPC's number knowing fully well that the company no longer exists.

All I read about them is they have horrible service and play run around games with people. Not to mention the lawsuits against them.

They are #2 cause they sell cheap inferior products

  • mathers3000,

I can see that you are upset with how you've been treated. However, it sounds as if you have a Gateway Professional laptop or desktop. -- If Acer refered you to MPC, that means you have a product that ISN'T THEIRS.

They didn't make it. They didn't sell it. They're not responsible for it. I know that it SOUNDS like they're the same, but this is like blaming Toyoya for the problems with your Ford.

I respect your opinion... I just have a different one.

    .

    Peace,

    Fr. Robert

  • wat graphic card does gateway p-7811fx have?

  • 9800gts

  • a notebook is a laptop right?

  • yes

  • if you want the 7805u, which is slightly better (1gb ram for gpu and 320gb hd), then take a look at the best buy ads every week. I saw the model on sale for 1049 a few weeks ago, which is an amazing deal. Keep your eyes peeled, youll make a mistake not buying a laptop on sale. I got the 7811fx on sale for 1249 at best buy, just wait for a laptop sale.

  • hi i am trying to decide between a 7805 from best buy with a grand total of $1300 and a 7811 from ebay with a grand total of $950 they are exactly the same in specs but the 7805 has a wxga and 1 gig of ddr3 video memory and the 7811 has a wuxga with a 515mb video memory so my questions are what is the better buy? and what is best for gaming? and if i do get the 7811 i will upgrade the cpu

  • hi gadgetts , im thinking about selling my desktop and get this laptop as a replacement.

but im from the UK and cant find it anywhere , so do you know if bestbuy delivers to the UK?

  • you have made my decision for me! IM BUYING THIS COMP! ...buuuut your info pane for this video has a slight typo that scared me a but...the RPM you has written down is slightly wrong being "2700rpm" when it should be "7200rpm" : )

  • inflames625,

Many thanks... I corrected the typo. Thanks for catching it!

    .

    Peace,

    Fr. Robert

  • Is this a good laptop for a college student? I would like a reliable notebook for lots of writing and web searching. I also want to be able to run Microsoft FSX. My other concern is that Gateway no longer has this unit on the website. Does anyone know if they stopped making them?

By the way, this review is better than CNET's.

  • picfyc,

This is a great laptop for a college student IF you don't plan on bringing it around to class. It's too heavy for that.

It's incredibly powerful, but remember that it's a "desktop replacement and not really a laptop. -- If you want a really portable laptop with a great battery life, check out the T-Series from Gateway. We reviewed that too!

    .

    Peace,

    Fr. Robert

    .

    P.S. Thanks for the compliment!

  • What is your take on buying a refurbished ones versus brand new ones. I see a substantial savings of up to $400 on the refurbished ones. Do you know if the T-series can run Microsoft FSX without any problems? Thanks Father Robert.

  • After a painful search for this laptop, I finally found one on Ebay..... Love it so far!! Thanx for the critique. Keep up the good work... Feelin sorry for those who don't have this device.

P.S. I spent 7wks in Best Buy limbo trying to purchase this thing. Don't buy a refurb. If there's a new untouched laptop out there, just bite the bullet and buy it. Paid 1450 for mine.

  • quixgofar,

    Thanks for the input.

  • lol in the beginning it sounds like u said

"are u cravin some moble gay men"

  • Hello Father,

Could you tell me if the Gateway P-7801u is of the same quality as the P-7811FX?

    Thank you in advance.

  • yeah i was wondering the same thing. I looked on the gateway site and the lap top shown on this video is not list anywhere on there under the P series tab. I did however see P-7801u there. Does anyone know if this lap top can run Microsoft flight simulator? Thankyou.

  • Yes, it has better stats, this video is a little older, i have the 7801u and run wow maxed out 50+ fps and i can play crysis maxed with like 18fps and with shaders off i get like 26. Good laptop

  • Guys I do not have this laptop at the moment, But I most likely will buy it. (Could I build a better laptop for a less price, Their seeling for 1,100.00 on E-Bay.)

  • jimmyhimmy106,

Hmmm.... 1,1100 on Ebay... do me a favor... wait a week then check back with 'gadget'.

    .

    Peace,

    Fr. Robert

  • You messed up on your grammar, xD 1,100(.)00. Thank you for your speedy reply your staff/you do a great job at replying.

  • I found the same deal on ebay. 1100 and it is refurbished. Is this a good deal? save about $300

  • Anyone could answer me if the gateway 7801u the one whit 320gb hd 7200rpm and the 9800m gts whit 1gb dedicade could run crysis on max and gta 4 ? thank you people.

  • ThorVeras,

I'll tell you in about a week. :)

    .

    Peace,

    Fr. Robert

  • thank you sir.

  • Gateway is owned by a company called acer just wanted to let you know. i like this and might look at the equivalent for collage.

  • AdmiralSteel,

Thanks for your note. Yes... Gateway was purchased by Acer a little more than 2 years ago. However, they still operate more or less independently. As a company, Acer/Gateway has now moved into the #2 spot in sales of laptops.

    .

    Peace,

    Fr. Robert

P.S. We're reviewing the newest FX P-Series notebook just before CES 2009.

  • does the 7811fx have a finger print scanner

  • No. They removed that feature from the newer P-Series notebooks because not many people wanted them.

    .

    Peace,

    Fr. Robert

  • thanks for your review, it convinced me to bu a gateway fx lapotp, and it is awesome!!!

  • Hey jslizzzle,

Glad you like it! It really is a great piece of gear for an incomparable price.

    .

    Peace,

    Fr. Robert

  • Fantastic review dude, you filled me in on everything I wanted to know and more.

Looks like I found my laptop. I've been looking for a great price/performance mix.

    :D

  • Akekazori,

    Cool! :)

    .

    Peace,

    Fr. Robert

  • Very informative review, thank you.

I do have two quick questions, if you wouldn't mind answering them, that be great.

    A) Is this even on the market still? Best Buy hasn't had one in a month or two.

    B) Is there a new entry in the P-Series on the near horizon? I'd like to know before I buy, to see if it would be worth waiting.

Believe me, I've searched and searched, but haven't found anything to adequately answer my questions.

Anything you know would be great.

  • utubegod35,

If they don't have the P-7811fx, the'll have another of the P-series. Any yes, there is a brand-spanking new P-Series on the horizon. I'm betting we'll hear about it during CES 2009.

    .

    Peace, Fr. Robert

  • i haven't found any info on the new p-series coming out in '09. I wonder if the price will be the same as the p-7811fx or more expensive....By the way keep up the good work.

  • chlorinetailor,

Many vendors are holding back on their announcements until CES 2009. It's a marketing thing. They want something cool to release at the show so that the press will want to stop by their booth.... We'll be there and count on us showing you any of their new product.

    .

    Peace,

    Fr. Robert

  • cool

  • Well first off I wanna say thankyou for asking all my questions but now i have a couple more xD

First are you paid to advertise FX laptops? And if you are not paid could you please give me an honest answer of wahts better? Toshiba Qosmio laptop or Gateway P7811FX ? I'm not sure which 1 is better for gaming

  • landth78,

We are not paid to advertise anything. We receive many products in the lab, I only review the tech that I would actually want to use or which I see as interesting/groundbreaking. The vast majority of it has to go back after the review. -- Our "Production Sponsors" don't give us money, they give us things like a space to shoot or a loan of the equipment we use to edit.

Between the Qosmio and the P7811FX I really can't say as I returned the only Qosmio we received in the lab.

  • p7811 is better, but you can't really go wrong either way

  • Nice review.

    Thank You

  • if you were to buy this laptop and hook it up to an outlet and play games for about 6 hours, you would need external fans to keep it cool right? or else itll just shut down?

  • No. The internal fan works just fine. It will get hot, but it's still within the operational limits of the system.

  • I have one and just installed 2 x 320g 7200rpm drives in Raid 1 AND I'm dual booting Ubuntu 8.10 desktop (with raid support).

    It is AWESOME!

While playing games and such... the air from the vents is not just warm but HOT. My ONLY complaint so far is the Wifi Switch. It's to big and in a bad location.

    GO GET ONE! :)

  • Yes, it's a great price but I can't seem to find anyone who sell it outside USA. Even Gateway themself has taken it of their homepage. Does someone know why and how a guy in Sweden like me can get one?

  • wow! great price.

  • This makes me want this laptop even more!!!

  • Holy mother of god, thats a great review! XD I just got that P7811FX and its specs are GODLIKE - perhaps thats why the Jesuits did the review lol!

  • apostolic technology?!?!?!

  • nicely explained!

    great video

  • Can't wait to get this laptop :D

  • great review!!! i should be getting this laptop somtime within the next month if things go the way i plan

  • god bless this laptop! i love it

  • Great review. I was worried that this review might be biased due to sponsorship of Gateway, but review was very thorough, and also based on thorough research of laptop industry. 5 stars!

  • hyperkkt,

Thanks for the sentiment! --- We've been wondering if our sponsorships would get in the way of our reviews... as it turns out, not really!

Thankfully we've not received any craptacular products from any sponsors, but the real test is what we'll do WHEN (not if) that happens.

Please keep us honest! Peace, Fr. Robert

  • Excellent review. Very thorough

  • big words hurt my head

  • LucanAndTrent... me too.

  • this has to be really good if ur sponsored by jesus

  • Actually that's "The Society of Jesus" --- You know.. the Jesuits... The religious order than runs 28 colleges and universities, 64 high schools in the United States alone. (Hundreds worldwide) --- Yeah... THAT'S who sponsors us. Peace, Fr. Robert

  • ugh society

  • Very good review ! 5/5

I'm not sure if they sell these in Australia though. I may have to hit up eBay

  • like I said, I will get this computer, but it sucks that I have to wait until the end of november because burger king only pays minimum wage:(

  • I just takes patience... don't worry, by the time you save up enough for this computer, a better and cheaper one will be released. Just don't fall into the temptation to borrom money to buy it!

(Oh... and I used to work at a McDonalds... so I feel your minimum-wage pain!) Peace, Fr. Robert

  • really ??? hope that happens soon as mine will come in Decemeber.Only thing i want to see is an upgraded graphics card, and little more battery life.Other than that this laptop rocks....................

  • The graphics card is the best you can get.

  • i think im gettin mine tomm. it hink ima get crysis warhead

  • Fr. Robert,

How can I get my webcam to run smoother. It tends to studder or "lag".

    Thanks

  • Awesome!

Thanks, I'll probaly buy this if I dont find any better out there, but it seems kinda hard ;D

I live in sweden tho so maybe there will be some more negativs for me ;S

  • Wait did he say all the eye candy on Crysis? Does he mean Very high? If thats true then thats it I am getting this laptop.

  • Very nice, good review!! This might convince me to buy it. Or should I wait till quad cpu laptop?? Are these CPU upgradable??

  • All of the Gateway FX laptops use socketed CPUs, so technically they could be upgraded, but you DO have to worry about things like thermal and voltage compatibility.

  • I just got this laptop today i loaded up bioshock and crysis and i was blown away at the performance on both of the games also is there a built in microphone on this system? This review was very helpful in making my decision of which laptop to get and i want to thank you

  • roflcopter1222,

NP... it was a pleasure to review the laptop and I'm glad you like it! Peace, Fr. Robert

  • Hello Father, I really enjoy your reviews. I recently purchased a 7811FX and have noticed a lot of back light leakage, I plan on having the LCD Unit replaced. However, I am curious if you noticed this issue on the review unit?

    Thanks!

  • GoldenGlovezx,

Not at all. The display on our review unit was perfect. -- Can't you return the unit to the store instead of getting the LCD replaced? It sounds like they sold you a defective unit and they should make it right. Peace, Fr. Robert

  • alot of ppl saying this laptop overheats and locks up

  • I can't speak for a lot of ppl, but I can say that it didn't lock up a single time during our tests. Peace, Fr. Robert

  • When I saw the specs of this laptop and the price over at Best Buy I couldn't believe it. I'm getting it not only for gaming (Flight Simulator X, World of Warcraft, Halo 2, Battlefield, UT3, etc.) but also for high end video editing- Sony Vegas, After Effects - and to do various animation and modeling projects with 3ds Max and Maya. This laptop is a beast for the price. I'm going to get a keyboard, a 15 button shuttle mouse, a stand, and some extra PC fans. And a backup external HDD for it.

  • I WILL get this laptop, it looks amazing, I was thinking about getting a desktop for great gaming, but when I saw this video of this laptop I crapped myself, this laptop looks like a complete desktop replacement. All I want to know is how well it does online for games like Battlefield 2 and also I don't understand what you mean by it being a "boon" or a "boom" to people who want to do stuff like video editing on it. and great job on tis video, please reply

  • I have the p-7811fx and it will plow through BF:2 like a bush plows through innocent middle easterners (it will easily run BF 2 max settings no lags, unless of course your internet suckzors)

  • i want to know how it plays with World of warcraft

  • It will run warcraft max settings at 1920 x 1200 with no lower than a 60 fps (even in crowded cities)....btw I got 60 fps when I was running anti-virus so yea...

  • thank you, i cant wait to get that laptop only 8days left

  • I LOVE MY GATEWAY P-7811FX IT IS BEAST!!!!

Just be sure to buy a mouse because it is nearly impossible playing today's games without one

  • got one of these babies last weekend, very impressive. Very fast, plays crysis at 1900x1200 on high, with slowdowns only later in the game when there is a lot going on on screen. Movies look amazing, glossy screen surprisingly doesnt have glare at all. Im very pleased, only thing i dont like is that i have a small spot on the top that glows blue, noticable when the screen is all black. Its not dead pixels because when it isnt black you cant see it.

  • He is right though I got a new backpack that holds 17' inchers which works fine for me...

This isn't an ultra portable laptop and it is sort of heavy but that does not matter because his thing is a BEAST and it is very cheap (price wise) considering the amazingly high specs....5.2 WEI is all you need to know (with 5.9 gaming graphics and 5.9 graphics)

  • I have the computer and I love it so much I named my name after the model ;)

If your thinking about getting it DO IT!!!! DONT WAIT!!!1 YOU WILL LOVE IT!!!

  • do you get to keep all these stuff or do you have to send it back after you review them? just wondering.

  • Ahhhhhh... unfortunately no. The VAST majority of gear has to be sent back to the manufacturer or PR agency. There are a select few products that they let us hang on to (they would like us to use them again and again for extra exposure) and we have companies like Gateway who supply us with production gear, but unfortunately we don't get to keep most of our review units. Peace, Fr. Robert

  • This was a great review, very detailed and informative. Kudos to you guys and keep comin out with these.

  • Thanks smartalec94! Peace, Fr. Robert

  • wow i just noticed that with most of your videos you seem to respond to people very quickly with any questions they might have most people aren't as quick as you are and i have to say good job and great reviews!

  • Thanks roflcopter1222... and thanks for sticking with us for so long. Peace,

     Fr. Robert

  • people save your cash for SAGER's NP9262. I have one and its delight. Mine is 2.4ghz quad core but can easily go to 3.0 ghz.

  • Hmmmm.... interesting... we'll have to ask Sager if they would send us a review unit.

  • Actually, I just did a quick config of the NP9262 and a unit that is comparable to the P-7811FX is $2549, almost twice of the street price of the Gateway.

The Sager has a much higher spec ceiling, but that pushes the price even higher. --- I think I'll stick with my choice of the P-7811FX... I never said it was the quickest, but it definitely OWNS the price/performance ratio. Peace, Fr. Robert

  • I'm going to get the p-7811 fx next week am i going to need to carry the charger with me everywhere i go to play games like the newer direct x10 games or have the improved the battery since the release?

  • Well... you'll get about 2 hours of battery life playing games (which will peg the CPU at 100% much more than regular usage) -- -If you want to play longer, you'll need the adapter.

  • hey wots that portable device at around 00:29

  • It's a PDA-like device from CES 2007. It never made it to market, but you can check it out on TheTechStop(net)

  • good reviews. have you ever looked at any of the toshiba sattelites? they also seem to have good performance/price value.

  • oops... my bad.

  • Dont let it happen again..

  • they just released a new one T_T

  • the more Gateways you show, the more I begin to dislike my current one. :(

    great review again.

  • Doh... sorry about that. :(

Still, remember that the best place to be in tech is NOT on the bleeding edge. Peace, Fr. Robert

  • very true. my current laptop is less than a year old, in the P-series, and these are just blowing mine away.

either way, no worries about the reviews. enjoy seeing how much better technology is getting. :)

  • Wow, I've never really been fond of Gateways till all your reviews on them Robert. And honestly for something like some serious editing for my photography I think I wouldn't mind replacing that for what I have now. I like how that thing has the power and definitely the screen size for me to magnify into my pictures.

  • That's a common experience... Gateway really blew their reputation back in the late 90's with some questionable decisions and a product line that wasn't all that exciting. Their new stuff is not just good and inexpensive, but it has a style all its own.

  • That ways more than the PowerBook G3 and that clocks in at 7.3 LBS

  • Are you comparing a PowerBook G3 to the P7811FX? I can only assume that you mean that this "weighs" more than a PBG3, and that's true... but the P-7811FX has a screen that is 5 inches wider, a CPU that is 2Ghz faster (and dual core), a full-size keyboard, 8x the memory and so on...

The closer comparison would be a PowerBook G3 and the Gateway T-6836 which weighs 5lbs and STILL spanks every possible metric including price.

I'm hoping you weren't serious about the comparison.

  • All in good fun my friend all in good fun.

  • Wheh.... I thought you were joking, but I wasn't completely sure!

  • There is also P-173X and P-173XL, the P-171 is a little older, plus this range goes along with P-6860FX

  • it looks like a solid notebook. the only improvement hardware-wise i would like to see is a little bump in the processor speed. but with the video card and everything else, i can see they don't want it to catch on fire lol. also, are you still considering making a gadget irc chat or no?

  • that thing is a monster! I regret getting an HP :(

  • Can you run a laptop soley on the 110 wall outlet without messing up the battery?

  • Yes... but if it's going to be on AC for an extended period of time I always recomend removing the battery until you need to go mobile.

The charging circuitry in most notebooks will try to keep the battery at 100% which means that it will top it off from time to time. That's a nice convienence, but it also means that its using up one of the precious "power cycles" and moving the battery that much closer to recharge death.

  • our gateway laptop is still on an intel entium, its 1.7ghz but it can easily be overclocked to 2.0, i just dont want to do it cus it really dont make a diff

    that one is nice
