I remember seeing this at the time. It sounded awesome - a huge adrenaline rush.
And to those that say Springsteen, etc, had nothing to do with punk; well, the Clash had evolved WAY beyond punk by the time they recorded this. They were the definition of timeless rock and roll.
Springsteen and Van Zandt are more punk than 99.9% of self-described punks. I'm talking about the idiots who think being punk is being an asshole jerk.
I like how most of the dissenters here are acting like they just gathered up a bunch of nobodies. Springsteen and Costello alone are, at the very least, on a par with The Clash, Van Zandt was in the fucking E-Street Band, and Grohl was in two of the biggest alt-rock bands of the last twenty years. It was an awesome thing to see them all on stage together, they did a passionate reading of the song, and those solos were fucking brilliant. I can't believe PUNK fans are complaining about sloppiness.
Could not agree with you more. Maybe, they could have had a different bassist than Kanal bouncing around out there. But the rest of the crew is a freaking all-star team.
Pretty good, but Joe Strummer at his prime was a better vocalist than all of them, even Springsteen. By the way, Steven Van Zandt seems to be struggling with pitching his voice while Dave Grohl, a former drummer, does a great job. Go figure!
Thanks for the video! Did you know that Squeeze, from the same genre as Elvis, is touring North America in the Summer of 2007 and the UK later in 2007? Tickets for the North American dates are available on the Ticketmaster website!
It was a tribute so it's not all about the quality, it was why they did it. And really the quality wasn't that bad. Joe deserved it and I think he would have been pleased. And it did suck that not everyone stood up for a departed legend, although I'm not sure that it was just the rappers.
awesome tribute. i think tony canal is such a solid bassist. and of course bruce springsteen, elvis costello, dave grohl, and the sopranos guy are the shit.
I gotta agree with Branca- not impressed. Not 1 of these guys gave a good vocal delivery not saying theyre bad singers but they just didnt a very good job with this song.
they should have put the no doubt bass player in a small dark room behind the stage. that kid is so fruking gay. and why does bruce say osamas there too (2.50)
Actually, it was a pretty ropey version. A band I was in with four girls tried it differently with acoustic guitars and violins, but sadly no version exists.

The show is good, the musicians are awesome but the public suck. It's just a bunch of guys in suit... Where is the original power of the clash ???!

for some reason it just feels so stupid, especially the part where steven van zandt sings in a british accent but i could be wrong.

Sorry guys, but you're not the Clash. Elvis, go back to doing songs for dippy romantic comedies, Bruce, go back to your painfully boring music.
