  • Barbara Stanwyck should be #1!!!!!

  • And please where is GINA LOLLOBRIGIDA?

  • All before 1950s, All American, All white... Your choice but don't call it "all time"..

  • Such a shame that Clara Bow isn't on the list

  • I think Ava Gardner is very underrated...

  • @TheScarecrow1988

Marilyn Monroe and Liz Taylor are waay fucking better than Meryl Streep or whatever her fkn name is she's good. BUT THESE ARE LEGENDS! Meryl Compared to These Legends she's pure dipshit

  • This account is by this individual's taste everyone has their idea of who should be up there...no Hedy Lamarr, Lana Turner..Myrna Loy and Rin Ton Tin LOL.

  • Sorry Meryl Streep should be number 1, even though these are older actresses, meryl made history years ago, and truely is the best with all her nominations

  • These are the 25 greatest female stars. I can agree with most of these. The ranking for actress would be different. Some here, would not be on the second list.

  • I love Kate to death but Bette is number one! Who did the voting? No one asked me!

  • Where the FUCK is Pamela Anderson... this is fucking bull shit... Im gonna kill myself...

  • Vivien Leigh should be higher on the list... and in my opinion, Bette Davis should be first. (How is Marilyn Monroe ranked that high?? she's great but overrated here)

  • They were truly great! I love them all, such classics! I especially love Elizabeth Taylor, Vivien Leigh, Lauren Bacall and Audrey Hepburn.

  • Where is Norma Shearer,Aline MacMahon

  • Where is Noa Shearer

  • How did Marilyn Monroe get so high on the list? I mean seriously above Ava Gardner, Viven Leigh, Ginger Rogers, Barbara Stanwyck, Judy Garland, and Elizabeth Taylor?

  • TODAYS LIST FOR MODERN STARS. 1. MERYL STREEP 2. JODIE FOSTER 3. KATE WINSLET 4. HILARY SWANK 5. NICOLE KIDMAN 6. JESSICA LANGE 7. HELEN MIRREN 8. ANGELINA JOLIE 10. JULIANNE MOORE 11. CATE BLANCHETT 12. HALLE BERRY 13. SISSY SPACEK 14. SALLY FIELD 15. CHER 16. CHARLIZE THERON 17. KEIRA KNIGHTLEY 18. REESE WITHERSPOON 19. MARION COTILLARD 20. RENEE ZELLWEGER 21. ANNETTE BENING 22. SUSAN SARANDON 23. NATALIE PORTMAN 24. HOLLY HUNTER 25. GWYNETH PALTROW
  • @jackcash94 No Glenn Close?

  • NO MERYL STR EEP LOL THIS LIST IS ABSURD

  • I think Judy Graland was a much better actress than Elizabeth Taylor, Maliryn Monroe or Audrey

  • my god - why does dietrich always look so smart on all photos? as if she were the only one who really knew what was happening

  • Katharine Hepburn will always be #1

  • guys this isnt a list of the 25 greatest actress of all time! this are the 25 greatest screen legends of american cinema! thats why monroe is so high on the list, great legend but definitely not a great actress

  • and Gene Tierney?????????????

  • So you don't think Susan Hayward ranks in the top fifty?

  • what a load of animal (i.e. all kinds of animal) crap... these dicks should get their heads out of their asses... the list is all messed up and its ranking ridiculous...

  • I probably could, but regarding what you said before, I do understand. I thought about that shortly after I commented on this video. I respect your research.

I would have to disagree with you about what you said last. Women are just as good now as they were then. I agree, men run everything, but women are slowly starting to repeal that idea. It's our generation, these ladies Stanwyck, Davis, and Hepburn were the pioneers of film.

Times are changing, and the gauntlet has been thrown again.

  • Audrey Hepburn isn't a good actress.

  • I don't understand how someone like Meryl Streep, who is arguably the greatest actress of the latter half of the 20th Century can be left out of such a flawed list. I would also argue that Kate Winslet is good enough to be up there as well. She's building a new road for young actresses everywhere to follow. To the up-loader, I don't blame you, but to AFI, I'd edit that list in definitely.

  • Neither lady meets the parameters of the list. According to the AFI site, the list is for actors whose screen debut was made before 1950, or whose screen debut was after 1950 but whose death marks a completed body of work.

As much as I love both ladies you mention, any list of todays actresses would be a lot less interesting as movies are now the playthings of male actors. Can you name 20 actresses today at all? And how many of them compare to Stanwyck, Davis and Hepburn?

  • Good to see Judy Garland up there!

  • Susan Hayward won every acting award , Oscar, Cannes, New York Film Critics, Golden Globe and was a box office star for 10 years. How about Doris Day who holds the record of being 1 for 5 years in a row! How About Kim Novak?

    How about Gloria Swanson?

  • What about Natalie Wood??!!!! My all-time favorite. =D

  • They all have tha same stereotype, they all are pretty..... Some were great actresses but some just "displayers" (I have no idea this word exist) of their beauty.......

  • judy garland number 8?????!!!!!!!!!! judy was one of the geartest entertainers of all time she should have been at least top 5!!!!!!!!

  • Marilyn Monroe before Joan Crawford? Really? but wait, it gets worse... Bette Davis at number 2 to Katherine Hepburn, really?? :/

  • Marilyn before Ava Gardner..wow who come up with this list?

  • I would definitely nominate Cate Blanchett as a modern actress in the same league with Lauren Bacall and Katherine Hepburn, though most modern actresses seem to pale in comparison to most of the ones on this list. Barbara Stanwyke was great.

  • Sorry, I don't mean to spam the page. But as I looked the list over, I could'nt help from wondering, WHERE THE HELL IS GLORIA SWANSON???????

  • @TheOcantomi85 Gloria Swanson was a great star but an effing horrnedous actress. Her signature role in ONE talkie, in which she horrendously over acts and its okay because she is SUPPOSED to, does not make the top 25 actress list, sorry.

  • One you've seen any of these women in action, todays cinema is a bunch of crap. These were real actresses! What happened to this creed? Now in days its all about beauty! Instead of talent! Now in days if you have a pretty face, a nice ass, and big boobs you win the Oscar! Outrage. No wonder Meryl hasn't won an Oscar in 30 years!

  • No Meryl Streep, no Geraldine Page. Ridiculous list.

  • @bailinnumberguy

well, not to ridiculous if you ask me, it's only from the golden era so, I guess that's why Meryl is not in the list

  • i think that list is good. but i think Anna Magnani is missing. the greatest european actress beside Ingrid Bergman and Greta Garbo, imo.

  • No one can compete with Meryl Streep/simply te best !!!!!

  • 1) Katherine Hepburn

    2) Bette Davis

    3) Vivien Leigh

    4) Ingrid Bergman

    5) Judy Garland

    6) Joan Crawford

    7) Meryl Streep

  • @Monpetit22 I so agree. Although I might switch Meryl and Joan. But I think Vivien was definitely a better actress than Ingird! I mean, Gone With The Wind! Hellooo lol

  • Where is the song?? No audio...

  • Barbara Stanwyck ranked 11th ? This alone should suffice to condemn this list as arbitrary (far more than usual) and beyond redemption. Missy,Bette and Katharine would be a tie for the top spot, in a just world (Ingrid 2nd). And no mention of Jeanne Moreau, what on earth is wrong with the AFI people? Unless they meant actresses who worked in Hollywood (should have narrowed the category, in that case). I, for one, would take Ida Lupino (J. Fontaine and her sister) over May West any day.

  • @MarthaDelios I absolutely agree, alhtough I would place Vivien Leigh at second and Ingrid at 3rd.

  • I think Vivien Leigh should be ranked much higher. Seriously, so underrated.

  • @jojoxx1231 I agree. she's ,my favorite actress :]

  • Marilyn Monroe, Audrey, and Elizabeth Taylor are not better actresses than Judy. Besides the top 3, this list is just a bunch of pretty women in no particular order. Especially if Monroe is before Joan Crawford, wth is that?

  • @TheOcantomi85 I agree. And on the whole, I'd say these women were Stars rather than Actresses. And that's the way I prefer them.

  • @TheOcantomi85 I think Judy Garland got overlooked because she is an entertainer. Her legend is greater than just about any star, so I dont feel so bad. AFI knows Judy has a place above and beyond a comparison of actresses. She is god, period.

  • Crawford (dissed by her adopted daughter, but the most intensely dramatic next to Bette Davis. Marilyn changed cinema by her natural sex appeal and comedic abilities; Vivien Leigh created the most unforgettable character of all, Scarlett O'Hara; the stars today, with the exception of Maryl Streep, can't hold a candle to those classy, hands and fists on women who were WOMEN! They also had great roles to play whereas cinema has degenerated into baby talk and explosive blasts in the last 15 years

  • Lauren Bacall, Mae West, Marilyn Monroe were all good, but I don't think they were "great". Hepburn was great, but Davis was the greatest of them all.

  • marilyn monroe was a terrible actress

  • @PeteVNick In your opinion.

  • @PeteVNick I think the list is also based on the impact they had. She was a terrible actress though. haha

  • i like audrey, grace and vivien the best! grace is quirky and fun and she ended up marrying a prince...vivien is super super beautiful and played a role in one of the best movies of all time audrey had class, beauty, intelligence and she had manners also her movies were always my favorites

  • Ridiculous that Lombard, Harlow, Kelly and Gardner would be in this group instead of Shearer, Russell and Dunne. And putting at least 15 of these ahead of Mary Pickford would be preposterous if not just outright ignorant.

  • @iriisblue ~ And Bacall, who had less than a distinguished career, but not de Havilland, Fontaine, or Lupino?

  • @edwardjames50 I'm a Bacall fan, and she was a great star---still is--but I wouldn't rank her as one of the 25 greatest film actresses of all time. I'd say the same for Monroe (who I would easily replace with Turner). I wouldn't put Fontaine on the list either, but her sister for sure. Don't know Lupino much (High Sierra and a couple others). Shearer's omission is absurd. She was a huge star--MGM's biggest before Crawford--and a fine actress. We could probably hack this list for some time.

  • AFI got a tough job ignoring the only democratic way to measure

    Hollywood stardom: BOX OFFICE DRAW!!!

  • Good list, but why aren't Teresa Wright, Janet Leigh, Donna Reed, Olivia De Havilland, Kim Novak and Myrna Loy on the list? They're fantastic!

  • Audrey Hepburn, to me, is always an icon more than a great actress.

  • Joan Crawford should be in the top 5 in my opinion, if not number 1. The only reason she is 10th is because of all that Mommie Dearest bullshit.

  • @shanecincy ~ The lying Christina has, sadly, seriously tarnished the Crawford legend.

  • @edwardjames50 I wouldnt worry. Joan Crawford has a body of work and fans who will never forget. This will speak for her long after her daughter is gone.

  • My " Mighty Trio of Acting" will always be Ingrid...Bette...Katharine.

  • I have so many issues with this list, it's not even funny

  • Kate, Bette, and Audrey should all have 1a, 1b, and 1c ranking. All just too fabulous to choose one.

  • AUDREY HEPBURN in my opinion SHUDVE BEEN FIRST!!!

  • @cutie912100 I totally agree... <3 Audrey's the best of the best.

  • GARBO is the best

  • My favourite is Vivien...

  • I wish Natalie Wood was at least ON this list.

    She's my favorite actress.

  • @OldHollywood93 Oh ok. Im fuckin fed up with youtube 2 remove things thinkin they have the rights. Bastards!

  • There was no song.

  • @19GirlBad

    Sorry.

Often when I upload songs to my videos, they get removed by YouTube.

I've sort of given up trying, they always get removed.

  • @OldHollywood93 When i noticed this i just got up youtube and played Anthems for a seventeen year old girl in the background, fot perfectly :) i know that doesnt solve the problem but ya know :D

  • @OldHollywood93 All these are just old movies. I don't know most of these actresses and I think that most of them are dead.

I mean I know Judy Garland from the Wizard of Oz though.

  • @09tranm ~ From what university did you receive your Ph.D.?

  • @edwardjames50 LOL.

  • We can't rank those actresses. They are all number one!

    Beautiful video!

  • Lovely...

They certainly will not be forgotten!

  • I think Ava should have been higher up..but that is my opinion

  • Beautiful song and pictures!

  • that was beautiful. and I completely agree with the number one actress, but i think that ingrid and audrey should have been switched..lol

    but that was beautiful

  • Wonderful Pictures !

    Great Song !

    Thanks for sharing :-)
