what's that garage door opener? i have a similar problem - i need to open a horizontal door between the two floors, so we bought a hoist and I am thinking of using attiny to do the job (controlling the hoist with a remote wired buttons, and counting the hoist rotations with an optocoupler sensor... however, I am a bit concerned about the triacs (it's a 0.5kW chinese motor) and the starting capacitor
