@BoaMulder its a power exercise that mimicks throwing. That exercise is supposed to be one of the most effective in building explosive power because it works almost your whole body in one explosive motion.
It's because strength and conditioning training for fighters is very different from just your average weight lifting session. They use lighter weight with more repetitions and compound exercises, which are very tiring.
@wubs23 power more important then skills..fi you never fight you will not understund..if you have best skills but some one kicking your legs you have pain thats all you will not fight well..power is very important..

@nekftw 'standard' Olympic lifts are not counterproductive.. with any sport! If Spong would only do those lifts (correctly!) and nothing else he will be even more explosive.. every fast and explosive sport can benefit from Olympic weightlifting.
i have to disagree with you stength training does not nessicarily promote explosiveness, unless focused on the speed of the olympic lift it just might lead to an overall stregth increase in the muscle groups and not nessicarily increase his explosiveness, plyometrics are exercises more geared twords improving your explosiveness, not saying that it isnt possible to improve explosiveness with olypic lifts just other excersises would give better results for explosive training
@mmastylez: Olympic lifts are the snatch and the clean and jerk, these 2 excersises can't be done slow, they must be performed fast and explosive so you will become (more) explosive when you perform those lifts. Ofcourse you can always make a combination with plyometric excersises, but too much plyometrics give a lot of stress on the nervus system. So with only Olympic lifts and Thai boxing, good fighters can become a lot more explosive but this is a result of many hours lifting
