Sojourner7ruth, There were 2 German divisions deployed on the beach defenses & beach area in Normandy: the 352nd Inf. Div. of just over 12,000 troops & the 716th Static Inf. Div. of ~7,500 troops, plus the 21st Panzer Div. counterattacked the Brits & Canadians but was thrown back with the loss of 30 - 50-tanks. All the Allied troops did not land in one wave, but a series of waves throughout the day. The 1st wave at Omaha Beach had ~1,700 troops.
Warfare back then relied a lot in the infantry than nowadays, they didn't have body armor and the comodities of today' s soldiers. Those guys really have some "cojones" to face death the way the did it. Real heroes.
The skill, bravery and sacrifice of the US Army, Navy and Air Force along with our Commonwealth allies carried the day. The great Russian Victories almost simultaneously on the Eastern front spelled the end of Nazi Germany and its mass murdering apparatus.

They won the war. Not to our disadvantage actually. But the defense of Caen was a German nastiness ;-)
