I have a 12" of this - its so very long since Ive heard it, as I dont have a turntable anymore. Im really glad to have found this youtube version. Many thanks for posting this classic.
@HAL0INREVERSE i know what you mean by synthpop, however synthpop is somewhat smoother in the melodies. When i heard this i did not think synthpop as i heard a bit of melodic industrial in the tune and neither did i want call it that, so i called it melodic futurepop. Saying that futurepop didn't exist then, but i still will call it that
@HAL0INREVERSE you have a good point there about proto futurepop, if you listen to many of the tunes that have some elements of new wave or old school ebm but not exactly called that, so where do they fit? neither are they synthpop neither so they could be called proto futurepop. Its a bit like the italodisco and eurodisco and a bit like italodisco and synthpop. The thing is proto sounds a good word to fit sounds that were not invented back then, well done
Video created by film director Alex Proyas. Sad to think that Frank has been dead 8 years now - and never got the MASSIVE recognition his work deserved. I saw him play live twice back in the 80's, and he was simply awesome - a real force of nature. I miss his idiosyncratic music, another one-off, gone.
@brianartillery You know, it truly saddens me to know that I never had the chance to hear his music live...
From his CD music/videos I became quite fond of fad gadget and always knew the talent he possessed, but to find out he was dead 5-6 years before I started listening kills me.
Although music is eternal, I'm glad he will always be with me...
@kombikrajsta I never liked EBM as a description for any type of music... but if you like it, hey go nuts. Personally I'd file Fad gadget under darkwave or proto-industrial.
gosh. sydney. I don't remember fad gadget touring here back then - I guess he must have - this track was popular in Aus at the time... was this the original video, or made later? (or just a you-tube cut-up?)
this is actually a short movie directed by alex proyas , yes it was made for the song but it is listed as a short movie, this is what he done befor he became a big time director and bought us the crow and dark city
Yeah Moroder used loops too, appregiators very similar to what Tovey would have used. Before that King Tubby used cut audio tape. But I hear what you're saying.
I saw Fad Gadget 6 months before he tragically died at the Depeche Mode Exciter tour in Manchester 2003. I must admit i'd never heard any of his stuff before but when opened with this song, i was blown away!
My favorite Fadgadget song is "Ladyshave", but I quite like this song (the drill sound is genius) and this video, in my opinion, is better than 90% of videos today. Sorry to hear Frank passed; he was a unique force in music.
This song has been lost with time it's such a shame the radios dont play any of this stuff anymore because its dated and wouldnt connect with the new generation according to them. In fact the new genetation is listening to stuff like this again! This song should have been a huge hit along with Back To Nature and the Fireside Favourites album.
the guy Im in an industrial band is doin his best with his radioshow, he plays a ton of fad gadget, chrome, residents, pwei, stuff like that... but i agree, we bemoan the same tragedy... but we Cover this song, and theres a good video online... try looking up Adaptive Reaction, thats us... just trying to spread the Tovey influence, Cheers!
Awesome song, and a great video by Alex Proyas. I recommand the early short film by Proyas called "Groping", very similar atmosphere like "ricky's hand" video, but even more dark, sick, gloomy and strange.
I LOVE you guys for reminding me of this - don't know why but the song came back to me today and I just looked it up on youtube - I sang along with all the words and ended up blubbing for half an hour ahhhhh nostalgia - now I feel old. I had original 10" in 1981 when I was just a tiny tot and everyone thought I was really odd for liking Fad .............. Happy days.......
...I still remember that September 2001 when Fad Gadget played live on stage during Depeche Mode's Exciter tour. It was in Hamburg, pouring rain, ass cold...and during Ricky's Hand that Frank threw his blood-soaked rubber hand into the crowd and fucking hit me...I looked like having had an accident...it felt good and the rest of the evening was brilliant knowing Ricky's Hand was in my pocket...
not the most original concept for a video, but the directors have an exquisite touch with composition and editing that make it haunting. Song is one of gadgets finest, too.
