  • The whistle pierces the soul.. that's why people love steam.

  • AMAZING!!!

  • wow, the whistle sounds almost like a Thunderbolt siren!

  • THATS better... No 67 on the back this time...

  • Now that is how a steam train should be driven! whack the throttle open, whistle blaring and tearing over the viaduct and through beautiful Durham and its pretty victorian station. Its literally like glipsing steams golden past. Excelent video :)

  • I now know this Tornado I was on a steam trip a few years ago in Canada with the Tornado building team I remember it now so I recal them saying it was built new but is this kitbashed parts from retired engines to create this engine or all new ? nonetheless is is Impressive as hell blowing through that station with that whistle blowing

  • @gaycowboy31 , Tornado is all completely new with the exception of a few small donated / found parts such as the whistle heard in this clip. Tornado basically didn't exist at all 19/20 years ago- that's how long it took to build it from scratch. There are some other new-build projects underway now in the UK - some will use retrieved parts from broken-up members of similar classes, and some will be virtually all-new like Tornado.

  • I understand Tornado is leading a train out of Kings Cross in Febuary does anyone know anything about that I read something brieflly in a UK rail magazine while in London

  • @gaycowboy31, The train you refer to is due to depart Kings Cross on February 26th. The best resource for the movements of UK based steam hauled trains and steam locomotives is the uksteam.info website which carries concise details of all such events well in advance, often also giving exact timings and locations for the run a few days prior to the event.

  • @SiriusHardware Febuary 26 thank you I only wish I could get a flight back to London for that it mighty expensive to hop a plane across the pond on a short notice like that but I might LOL its sounds tempting if only to see it depart hell the way it looking the UK right now isnt good anyway hopefully Febuary will be better I just left before all hell broke lose thre for the second round of snow I got caught up in the first round

  • @gaycowboy31 you can keep on top of special trains on this site; uksteam.info/tours/trs11.htm

  • @gaycowboy31 there is a site uk steam info which lists all steam railtours in UK. Tornado is due out of Kings Cross tomorrow (13/8/11) at 08:18 with a train to York due to return at 21:15. After that its due out of Victoria at 08:45 on Wed 17/8/11 to Weymouth due to return at 23:59 HOWEVER it may (if its late) terminate short at Clapham Junction at 23:38.

  • @tom201090 man I wish I could have been in London today to see that depart unfortunatlly I am over in the US in Texas the closest I get to this is if I do a trip to London I will be there someday to see this but hell its almost impossible to get a good shot at Kings Cross with all of the restrictions from Network rail with the train being so long unless they pull up to the buffer with the loco I tried to get a shot of the Dominun of New Zealand when we did GB4 but no luck to many trainspotters

  • @tom201090 I ran out of space thank you for the info on the UK steam site I hear Clapham Jct is the place to go to do some train watching

  • great video I am from the US so this may be a stupid question what ever happened to the famous Flying Scottsman was it not an A1 like this I ofton wondered what ever happened to it

  • @gaycowboy31, 'Flying Scotsman' was bought for the British National Railway Museum collection of railway locomotives in around 2005, and since then has been undergoing major restoration and should hopefully be back in service some time in 2011. 'Flying Scotsman' was originally built in the 1920s as a much earlier, different class also confusingly called 'A1', then rebuilt in the 1940s as an 'A3' which is what it still is now. The Tornado type of 'A1' class dates from the 1940s.

  • @SiriusHardware thank you for that info it sounds like 2011 is going to b a busy year for UK steam especilly if the Flying Scotsmn does come back so its an A3 interesting and the Tornado class was an A1 very interesting I learn more on UK steam everyday I have done alot of tours over the world with people from the UK and heard thm talking about steam trains and had no clue what they were talking about in terms of classes

  • No diesel on the rear that time, thank goodness!

  • Same whistle pattern.

  • What a Whistle!!!!!!! Music to my ears! Not even oliver cromwells whistle is as nice as that

  • @Jack60163, I understand that the chime (multi-note) whistle you hear in this clip was originally carried by Gresley A4 class 60023 'Golden Eagle'. The locomotive also carries the 'proper' A1 class single note whistle, but the A4 whistle tends to be used more as it sounds a bit more spectacular.

  • I am quite surprised to see a steam locomotive doing such a speed with a 13 coach train, must be about 360 tons, assuming about 28 tons per carriage. Our 3,300hp 201 class (Irish Rail) diesel locos do 100 mph - but that's with 9 coach trains.

  • @GMCobh , these were one of the crack express passenger locomotive types of their time and hauled the longest, heaviest passenger trains at high speed up and down the UK east coast main line between London and Edinburgh. Although 'Tornado' appears to be going very fast in this clip, it is legally limited to 75mph on the UK rail network and (officially) ought not to have been going any faster than that. In original service, I'm certain this class would have hit 90-100mph quite regularly.

  • wow that has to be the fastest steam engine ever built

  • @Thomasnumber1fan101 Amazingly, it isn't. The A4s were faster, the DRG 05's were faster, the 18 201 is currently the fastest steam locomotive in operation. The driving wheels have a diameter of 2.3 meters.

But Tornado certainly is strong as hell... just look at the length of that train! o.O

  • @Vallecrash ya and they did great got building it

  • Magnificent

  • well, she'll be going a hell of a lot slower than that when i see her. ELR in October! Yay!

  • That was Kinda Spooky, Cool VIdeo 5*

  • think about the earth your killing it with that steam !

  • @melstar1ify Killing? Do some research. Oddly enough the steam and ash actually can be considered fertilizers. Just look at scenic railroads, their always clambering through the grass. If it was unhealthy you'd think all that grass, and plants would die under heavy use of steam locomotives. The only reason we use diesel is because their easy to repair. Steam is more echo friend, and can pull more in the long run. Sure the smoke "pollutes" but what is it putting out? Coal, and water vapor.

  • Does anyone else have the feeling that she was over the 75mph limit? ;P

  • amazing whistle! 5*

  • @LeeWoodsPhotography oohh you lucky bugger ill be at durham ill get on it one day when pennies allow, have a good day and hope its a succes first class & premier dinning are sold out, i wish theyd do a mini tour on at newcast and off at durham that would be good

  • awsome bring back steam and a new fleet of deltics put some exitement like this back in the railways, may 31st 2010 royal scots grey back on 2 engines on the ecml ill be at durham, show the deltic some support

  • @wattass7, my school was beside the ECML and I used to see Deltics (with those lovely wide-windowed BR MK3 coaches) tearing up the track half a dozen times a day and rarely thought anything of it. The main thing I remember is the sound - or rather, the blood-curdling howl of their engines. It's nice that there are still a couple growling around.

  • @wattass7 Yes good plan

  • this is awsome video iv just been to shildon and seen tornado fab, personly deltics are my fav with steam a close second, wouldnt the railway be exiting again with a new fleet of deltics and steam WOW, but at the min the only time i go and look is when summit like this happens, i bet the locoshed book has one page in it now as all the trains are the same, RUBBISH, cant wait till may 31st royal scots grey back on the ecml ill be at durham

  • You folks over there are lucky to be able to say you have the newest steam locomotive of the world. You should be proud of the Tornado...she's quite the accomplishment. :-)

  • world class 5*

  • That was totally awesome!! 5 star

  • HOLY SHIT! AWESOME, how many speed can this "toy" get? I wonder if it could beat Mallard´s record :P

  • When Tornado was under construction it was widely thought that (because she was brand new) the 75mph limit which normally applies to historic main line steam locomotives would not apply to Tornado. So far however, Tornado seems to have had to stick to 75mph. It could probably easily cruise at 95-100mph if it was allowed off the leash (wouldn't that be a marvellous sight?)

  • Marvellous perhaps, but sight... You wouldn´t see the train comming at that speed :P What it would be awesome is a new steam record, I like "The Mallard" engine and it´s record, but it´s time to beat it!

Anyways it´s an awesome restore of a steam engine, seriously, british people know well how to manage steam trains, and spanish politicians should learn from you people.

Anyways, thanks for the info ;)

    Regards from Valencia, Spain

  • It wouldn't beat the Mallard, and would probably damage it to try. They simply aren't designed to be as fast.

  • Thanks for clearing my doubts ;)

    Regards from Spain

  • I know that if Tornado ever goes on the Deutche Bahn, Tornado can go as fast as she likes.

  • I saw some comments to the effect that they would like to take Tornado on a visit to Germany, especially to Meiningen where the boiler was made - but it would have to be organised in a way that kept Tornado financially 'in the black'. It's an exciting thought that there would be no formal speed limit there, but I think 100-105 mph is probably about the highest they would dare take her up to. In original service, A1s would probably have hit 95 to100mph quite regularly.

  • that looks fantastic. =] great video i loved it .

  • No it wasn't, it was running on rails.

  • That thing was FLYING! :-)

  • '75' mph...yeah..whatever!

  • Tremendous video.

  • its evern younger than a class 66

  • She doesn't hang around, does she?

  • was this from a top gear race?

  • No, this was an earlier run but the same engine was used in that race. if you search around for 'Top Gear' + 'Tornado' I'm sure you will find footage of that particular run on Youtube.

  • cheers :)

  • Excellent vid and a great capture of the Doppler effect with the whistle.

  • Holy bloody hell, that is fast! Great shooting!

  • nah...not that fast. (I say sarcastically)

  • This is awesome!

  • this is a real locomotive my friend,

what you see on the mainlines today are bags of shit compared to these beautiful monsters

  • This is a locomotive of today...

it was only finished last year!

  • just think your older than an A1 Pacific

  • One HELL of a driver .. Good man 5*

  • Another excellent clip - but it doesn't quite have that atmosphere of your 18.11.08 shot! I've looked at them ALL, and I still rate that one top!

  • Aha, yes, I don't think I'll ever be lucky enough to get another one like that. I'll keep trying, though. Thanks for looking in.

  • Fantastic! I must admire you Brits for your love of looking back and enjoying your past, especially your steamers. Many of us Americans, myself NOT included, have no care for learning where we came from. I'm guessing most of us who care about steam believe in "to know where we're going, we must know where we came from"? Take care,

    -Dan

  • We know where we came from, why do you think that beauty's moving so fast? To get away :P :)

  • Bl&*dy n)Rah! Thanks for posting Tornado at full stretch - amazing clip!

  • holy shit that was fast

  • Sorry about the head (twas me) ! ..... nice video though!

  • As you can see, I managed to do an emergency head bypass... the legs Shameobi refers to above (check out his clip) are actually yours - mine - being somewhat shorter - are hidden behind yours.

  • Fab clip-the majesty and power of this Steam loco at full belt is hard to beat !

  • Sorry but I was almost in tears to see 60163 'Tornado' brand new all resplendent..looking like a real locomotive should...you could imagine her sucking up the tracks as she thundered through the station..what a fantastic entrance..WOW!!! Thanks for posting this short, but brilliant video..

  • Good God! What a sight and sound! Its great to know there is a future for steam on the main line. Tornado, you are a star!

  • Glad you liked it, thanks. Tornado fans (especially those who have been wondering why she still doesn't have nameplates in this clip) may be interested to hear that she is to be officially named at York railway station on the morning of Thursday 19th Februrary 2009... by Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.

  • I was hoping Peppercorns kids would would name her

  • I agree!

  • Screaming clip!!

  • If that dont impress ya,nothing will!

  • Steam gives her life, her whistles give her voice, now thats what I call a statement..... Awesum.......................

  • My last comment wasn't very clear, was it? It was meant to say, both Durham clips are now in my Favourites list!

  • You've done it again! Exciting stuff! Both your Durham clips are now in my Fav. bin.

  • wow! never thought i would say this but i really liked this .. i was entertained throught out the whole thing and it didnt bore me.. haha which is good cause i love watching videos i can enjoy right away.

  • thats the way to see them*****

  • You were one of the blokes lying flat out near me. In fact your legs appear on my vid. It was worth the cold belly mate. Nice shot.

  • Thanks for the comment - I was a bit unluckier this time and didn't get a steady clear shot - hope you got a clear view over the top of us.

There's a lot of great footage of this daytime run, the weak sunshine seems to have hatched everyone out and they certainly made the most of it.

  • Comment removed
