@myrainywoods The point of the hard resin mother mold is to give the floppy Gel-10 something rigid to rest against during casting so the final part doesn't get distorted.
In the video, you mention that you can sand the resin down to get a smoother finish. I was wondering if t would be possible to use a resin and polyfiber mixture to add a hard shell to a one-off styrofoam prop, and if so, what kind of surface finish would that get me? would it be possible to sand and polish it to a nice glossy shine?
My question is, what was the original sculpture made out of? I have a mask type sculpture made out some medium soft clay....what would be the best way to make a mold of thay? Is about 6x8 in with some pretty deep undercuts. ? Great video's by the way!
Hello! I wanted to thank you for making these videos. I'm learning to work and cast with clay, and they're very helpful. As a student, I tend to think about the costs of my projects a lot, and I find myself wondering why you use resin for the mother mold as opposed to something cheaper, like plaster? Any light you could shed on this would be wonderful. Keep up the good work!
1512 is a very strong resin in thin sections. Add polyfiber and fiberglass cloth and it is even stronger. Consequently, a mothermold made with 1512 may be made thinner and therefore lighter and cheaper.

i made a mothermold with easyflow60 recently. Would the polyfiber work with that?
Ninjaculation 3 months ago
@Ninjaculation Yes, it would work but EZ Flo 60 is VERY fast. That is the only draw back.

Do you have part 3 of this where you create the copy of the original piece? I've watched the first part and this but can't find the next one :-(
Thanks,

@TekunoTheSecond If you want a glossy finish use a fast set resin like EZ Flo 60 w/o any thickener.

So what do you do next? Do you peel off the silicon like a glove?
filisp 1 year ago
@filisp Yes! Then you are ready for casting.
brickintheyard 1 year ago
@filisp Yes. Gel-10 is very stretchy and can pull off in one piece.

can you reuse the silicone, is there a way to melt it down?
CustomFig 1 year ago
@CustomFig Nope. But it holds up for lots of casts if used correctly.
brickintheyard 1 year ago
@CustomFig The mold may be used many times but the silicone cannot be melted.

@zap283 Plaster=heavy Resin=light Pieces that need to be slush cast need to have light weight molds.

could you just release the figure and then mold it in resin without first covering in Gel-10?

Not with all the undercuts and detail.

How does the 1512 resin compare with Plasti-paste in function, weight and price?

could i use vaseline as release?? thanks!
metalgrunger06 2 years ago
Paste wax works best. Wax dries, vaseline does not.

This is a resin mothermold for a Gel-10 silicone mold. The piece inside is a large figurine. I will have the other parts of the video up soon.
