i think i read somewhere that the tomcats intake and engines are similar if not the same as the f 18 super hornet. if you look at the super hornet from the intake to the nose it looks almost the same.

The only thing hornets have over tomcats is they're maintenance friendly, they don't require an insane amount of man hours before flight. That and they're cheaper to make..I remember one time on the flight deck (use to be navy) some dumb yellow shirt didn't know what he was doing and taxied a super hornet into one of our cats.....well after doing a check our jet was fine.but our tomcat had sliced the super hornet almost in half like butter.goes to show what tomcats and hornets are made of..lol
I cut my teeth and worked on the Tomcat for 18 years. I was a Aviation Electricians Mate in U S Navy. Started with VF-2 and was also stationed in VF-33, VF-101, VF-143 and also was a Instructor at VF-101 FRAMP. I was at the retirement ceremony at NAS Oceana and never seen that many grown men with tears in their eyes including me. The Tomcat has a special place in my heart and taught me aviation at it's finest. Thanks for the ride

Yes the Osprey is problematic, but the ones that are (finally) is service are doing a great job. And the new Superhornet is capable of most of what the F-14 could do (more even), at near the same price. Simply put, the Tomcat, while pretty to look at and good at what it did, was not meant for the 21st century. Unfortunate, sure, but these things happen. When the Tomcat replaced the Phantom there was a great deal of complaining.
th difference between the F-14 and the F-18 is like the difference between a 2002trans-am WS6 and a 2002 camaro SS. an F-18 can kill the enemy. an F-14 looks like its coming over to do it. in a world where peace is maintainedby the threat of superior firepower, the F-14 brought an "essence" to the game no F-18 can bring, no matter how technologically advanced it is or "better" it is on paper stats-wise. the F-14 IS the block beater, the alpha dog. what an F-18 wishes to be when it "grows up".
I understand the analogy, and agree completely. F-14s were also big and expensive to maintain and upgrade, however, and in this day and age, the bottom line has the final say. This Cold Warrior simply couldn't exist in a Post-USSR world, as it lost its primary function and found whatever utility it could've had usurped by it's smaller, cheaper cousin. The F-15 and eventually the F-22 will face similar fates.

i happen to study planes ya know. any way, I really like the tomcat, but the f18 is better. boeng wanted to make a multirole aircraft and easier to fly. i flew both planes on flight simulator, the f18 is easier to fly thus having the pilot better flying skils. The f18 marks a point of true multiroles. the navy wants an air plane the can litteraly do anything . The F-35 is the replacement of the f18. the f14 has done its roll and its job and it will be remembered. so shut the fuck up.

f14 is only better at intercepting; and what if the missile misses, then what? An f18 is far superior in a dogfight. The whole point of the fighter on a carrier is to defend the carrier from enemy aircraft, to secure the airspace until the airforce arrives, and to support bombers (unless the fighter is the bomber). The f18 is quite superior in at least the support role and probably the others too. The f14 just cannot stand up to today's modern fighters in a dogfight, and the f18E can, so...
and the tomcat's original job was intercept, it has greater range than the f18, so it can get fighters nefore the hornet even has to take off. and if the tomcat's missle misses, it still has 7 more under the wings. and in addision, the tomcat was not designed to dogfight, but it has proven to be able to bomb and dogfight just as well as the hornet, if not better
You must know little about aircombat. A good pilot (with good wingmen) in a quick airplane who is expecting enemy fighters approaching (as any attacker with wit about him should) can fake out BVR missiles. It's simple, whoever is not getting tagged in the group keeps the turkeys pinned while the fighters tagged turn on jamming and turn. Unless the tomcats flee, they must enter into a lost fight against quicker aircraft with which they were never purposed to tangle with in BFM.

What was the actual number of comfirmed kills by pheonix missile? Like 2 or 3. All others were probably AIM-7s or something. And what kind of aircraft did Iraq have? Almost unquestionably old and outdated migs. A bunch of old outdated migs shot down by an old, outdated fighter that was great for its time. Sounds about right to me. Tomcat can't keep up with the mig29 though and f18 can which is one reason to retire it and keep the f18.
Better look up how F/A-18 fared against MiG-25 in Desert Storm. Now compare that to Iranian F-14 vs. MiG-25. Maneuverability isn't everything. If the pilot is any good, he can keep the fight at BVR with the Cat's superior speed & acceleration.
Which would also put it into an inferior position. The f18 has superior BVR avionics so the mig25 is playing right into the hands of an AIM 7 or AIM 120. Remember that until 5th generation fighters, the f18 had the most advanced cockpit/avionics of any fighter craft.
Sorry but the F-14 only had 4 air to air kills in its intire career and none of them where shot down with the Phoenix. As a matter of fact we would shoot our Phoenix's at drones just to get rid of the damn missile.

the F-5 is in no way superior in speed and overall power, that's why it's only used for training. and they only used teh F-5 as a MiG in Top Gun because they couldn't get a hold of any MiG's to begin with. and to settle any qualms, the MiG-29A is NOT the fastet dog-fighter, but it is faster than any US aircraft, including the old Blackbird. the fastest is the other Russian fighter, the Su-27 Flanker.
Get your facts straight kid. Mig29A can get about to mach 2.2-2.3! f15 can go mach 2.5, f14 goes mach 2.4. The sr71 blackbird can easily go beyond mach 3. The mig25 is the only russian fighter faster than an American fighter, and one report said of a mig25 reaching mach 3 while flying over Isreal but the engines blew up! The su-27 is nowhere near as fast as the mig25 and especially not as fast as the blackbird! It's also not as fast as the f14 or f15

Next to the f4, it is probably the most successful fighter aircraft the world has ever known (though the f15 has the better kill record)

Now it just can't meet the performance standards set by modern 4th gen fighters (f18, f16, f15, mig29, su27, su33 am I forgetting any important 4th gen fighters?). It's still the best at taking down long range bombers, but that's not enough to allow it to take up so much precious space on a carrier deck. With so many potential enemies buying mig29s, I don't see the f14 having much of a future even if they kept it.
well, I think the point was the the f18e is a better ground attack plane than the f14. Of course the a10 is the best CAS aircraft built. Not the best long range strike plane though. We're not really talking about a10s here though.
whatever. Until the f35, it's the only plane the navy has that can keep up with the f16 in AA combat. In my opinion, it's a pretty slick looking aircraft too. As a future aerospace engineer (in school) I think I and my fellow engineering classmates can say that the f18 is possibly the best designed airplane for operating from a carrier until the f35.

sorry; they're not coming back. Too big, fuel inefficient, and limited compared to the planes of the modern era. They are really nice planes, but they are quite outdated. The navy is interested with airplanes that can do a lot of things besides just intercepting. Single-role airplanes make the logistics of aircraft carriers quite bad especially when they're as big as an f-14. That's not to say I don't miss it.
the tomcat also carries laser guided and un guided munitions for air to ground combat. also, this thing has a MUCH longer range than a stupid hornet, so poop on the fuel inefficiency. these, are gonna come back, i'll make sure they do!

I did maintenance on F14's when I was in the Navy. A lot of hard work but very rewarding with the pride that came with it. I will forever miss them.

F-14 is the best, Hornets, Falcons and even Eagles feared Tomcats. How sad for U.S. Navy today, they dont have fighters that could match carrier borne SU-27 or SU-33.

doubt it, it's a grumman design, they like big aircraft, as do i. but no, they're trying to get rid of everything from before 2000, which means the hornet's next to go. all the wanna use are the UCAVs, the F35 and the F22

Super Hornets are here to stay. Legacy Hornets are the ones going out the door. It's about time, those things have half the lifespan of an F-15. We'll continue to see F/A-18A-D models until the F-35C starts coming in real numbers. Improved Tomcat > Improved Hornet, too bad.

Power! Beauty! Speed! He will always have a room in the heart of the ones that love airplanes. There was never and there will never be a jet like F-14! A true eagle of steel! Superiorities technique separated, their successors are ugly and without class. His time ended, but he is the wall that F-18 and F-35 need to overcome. But he made his name for their qualities. That his "substitutes" make the same, if they can! ^_^

f14 is only better at intercepting; and what if the missile misses, then what? An f18 is far superior in a dogfight. The whole point of the fighter on a carrier is to defend the carrier from enemy aircraft, to secure the airspace until the airforce arrives, and to support bombers (unless the fighter is the bomber). The f18 is quite superior in at least the support role and probably the others too. The f14 just cannot stand up to today's modern fighters in a dogfight, and the f18E can, so...

and the tomcat's original job was intercept, it has greater range than the f18, so it can get fighters nefore the hornet even has to take off. and if the tomcat's missle misses, it still has 7 more under the wings. and in addision, the tomcat was not designed to dogfight, but it has proven to be able to bomb and dogfight just as well as the hornet, if not better

You must know little about aircombat. A good pilot (with good wingmen) in a quick airplane who is expecting enemy fighters approaching (as any attacker with wit about him should) can fake out BVR missiles. It's simple, whoever is not getting tagged in the group keeps the turkeys pinned while the fighters tagged turn on jamming and turn. Unless the tomcats flee, they must enter into a lost fight against quicker aircraft with which they were never purposed to tangle with in BFM.

What was the actual number of comfirmed kills by pheonix missile? Like 2 or 3. All others were probably AIM-7s or something. And what kind of aircraft did Iraq have? Almost unquestionably old and outdated migs. A bunch of old outdated migs shot down by an old, outdated fighter that was great for its time. Sounds about right to me. Tomcat can't keep up with the mig29 though and f18 can which is one reason to retire it and keep the f18.

Better look up how F/A-18 fared against MiG-25 in Desert Storm. Now compare that to Iranian F-14 vs. MiG-25. Maneuverability isn't everything. If the pilot is any good, he can keep the fight at BVR with the Cat's superior speed & acceleration.

Which would also put it into an inferior position. The f18 has superior BVR avionics so the mig25 is playing right into the hands of an AIM 7 or AIM 120. Remember that until 5th generation fighters, the f18 had the most advanced cockpit/avionics of any fighter craft.

Sorry but the F-14 only had 4 air to air kills in its intire career and none of them where shot down with the Phoenix. As a matter of fact we would shoot our Phoenix's at drones just to get rid of the damn missile.

the american f14 have 5 kills 2 su 22 2 Mig 23 and a mil mi 8. that make it five.the iranian tomcats are a very diferent story.i onestly dont know how many confirmed kills they have in all.If you like the f14 i sugest you to visit the f14 association.

The F-14 was around from 1970, until just recently, when it was retired in favor of the F/A-18 Hornet.
If you think the F-14's haven't been used to shoot down the enemy, google 'Gulf of Sidra incident' and 'VF-41 Black Aces' and read on.
The Tomcat will always live in the minds and hearts of those who flew them, as well as those of us who just think they're awesome!

the F-5 is in no way superior in speed and overall power, that's why it's only used for training. and they only used teh F-5 as a MiG in Top Gun because they couldn't get a hold of any MiG's to begin with. and to settle any qualms, the MiG-29A is NOT the fastet dog-fighter, but it is faster than any US aircraft, including the old Blackbird. the fastest is the other Russian fighter, the Su-27 Flanker.

Get your facts straight kid. Mig29A can get about to mach 2.2-2.3! f15 can go mach 2.5, f14 goes mach 2.4. The sr71 blackbird can easily go beyond mach 3. The mig25 is the only russian fighter faster than an American fighter, and one report said of a mig25 reaching mach 3 while flying over Isreal but the engines blew up! The su-27 is nowhere near as fast as the mig25 and especially not as fast as the blackbird! It's also not as fast as the f14 or f15

and even in ground attack roles, the f18 (I am mainly refering to f18e) has more essential qualities: avionics, quicker (for reacting to threats, very important), smaller profile for aa to target, etc. I've always liked the f14, I'm just concerned that our military performs to the best of its ability and not what looks the best. For example, I love the f4, but do I want it to come back? NO!

while i agree to a point, if the F18 gets hit once, it's going to go down, however, with the A10, it could get hit by everything and still make it back safely. but yes, the F18 is better at dogfighting, but the tomcat was designed to intercept, a mission that the hornet cannot do as well

the f16 is a much better multi role aircraft. The ONLY thing that the tomcat does better is shooting down longranged bombers. The f16 is just about the best at everything it does. It dominates close-air-combat, scores the highest in precision bombing, CAP, etc. In CAS only the a10 is better. f16 is higher performance, and much more versatile. Next to the f4, it is probably the most successful fighter aircraft the world has ever known (though the f15 has the better kill record)

the tomcat was a great air superiority fighter, 30 years ago. Now it just can't meet the performance standards set by modern 4th gen fighters (f18, f16, f15, mig29, su27, su33 am I forgetting any important 4th gen fighters?). It's still the best at taking down long range bombers, but that's not enough to allow it to take up so much precious space on a carrier deck. With so many potential enemies buying mig29s, I don't see the f14 having much of a future even if they kept it.

well, I think the point was the the f18e is a better ground attack plane than the f14. Of course the a10 is the best CAS aircraft built. Not the best long range strike plane though. We're not really talking about a10s here though.

whatever. Until the f35, it's the only plane the navy has that can keep up with the f16 in AA combat. In my opinion, it's a pretty slick looking aircraft too. As a future aerospace engineer (in school) I think I and my fellow engineering classmates can say that the f18 is possibly the best designed airplane for operating from a carrier until the f35.

sorry; they're not coming back. Too big, fuel inefficient, and limited compared to the planes of the modern era. They are really nice planes, but they are quite outdated. The navy is interested with airplanes that can do a lot of things besides just intercepting. Single-role airplanes make the logistics of aircraft carriers quite bad especially when they're as big as an f-14. That's not to say I don't miss it.

the tomcat also carries laser guided and un guided munitions for air to ground combat. also, this thing has a MUCH longer range than a stupid hornet, so poop on the fuel inefficiency. these, are gonna come back, i'll make sure they do!
