When I saw his first video, I myself asked if it was plausible. It would appear so, the question how the suit would react when a part of you touches the ground, in reality a planes wings remain off the ground to sustain lift until the last second. I don't think it's far fetched, I see this happening within 5 years......
Obviously you have to slow forward airspeed somehow with an air brake or flap device built into the wingsuit. I can see this happening and its not far off.
I think people are seriously misjudging the speed at which you can scoot in one of these things. Shin Ito recently set a distance record and was moving close to 180 MPH in the horizontal. Now imagine using your face, chin, and stomach as skid pads to land on a ramp and eventually bring you to a stop. As they stand now, you will not land one of these and survive
In world war two the Russians landed paratroopers without parachutes. They would jump out into a deep snow bank. They say half of them would survive the fall. I think it was against Finland.
Chutefree wingsuit? I can see wanting to BE ABLE to do a chutefree landing, but-until the concept is proven, you should attempt it in a chute-optional descent in case it doesn't look right. Being ABLE to do a chutefree landing is one thing, HAVING TO is another. I CAN see the weight advantages of such a suit, though parachutes are pretty light & unimposing these days.
my respect to this guy,but its really impossible to land without a parashute;the guy obviously isn't competent in physics. He'd know the small surface area of the wingsuit can't make the difference
Hey, DbozenD and TheBattleSCAR, save your random and irrelevant side conversations for your own channels, or instant messenger or whatever. nobody else cares about whatever it is you two are debating about.
@staphinfection STUPID?? what the .. are you talking about? you can go with your wingsuit to a mountain and then jump and land like a fkin bird thats the most incredible thing EVER
The parachute has worked for decades.... why change it now?? And what are we going to do to make this practical? Put giant slides up everywhere?
Yeah, that'll be great for infiltrating enemy lines. "Hey North Korea, can you construct a couple gigantic slides in your country at these strategic locations for us? Please, thanks."
But hey, if this guy wants to risk his life to try something stupid, then by all means.
It needs more surface area. 3 to 1 glide ratio is unsatisfactory. More like a bat, less like a squirrel. Look at their wings: they fold like a hinge. Squirrels have tails(which help) but only glide. Bats really fly. As the glide ratio increases, it becomes more plausible. Why land on your face if you don't have to?
would troops go through the trouble of setting up a landing platform in an area where the enemy is already crawling, on hand ready to shoot you down?? I mean, if you can take a shot at a parra-trooper then you sure as hell should be in range to take shots or launch grenades at a troop setting a rather large landing platform.
@1st503rdSGT Get the troops to the ground alot quicker than a parachute obviously. The faster they get to the LZ , the less chance they have of being shot down by enemy fire . With equipement (gun , ammo, etc) it might be a little harder. Drop that seperately , then meet up with it .
i mean if you look at a hang glider then a wing suit in the wing suit the human body is the aircraft structure so to make the suit surface area bigger without adding much weight i think may be the key to landing this.
what about wing extentions from the hands get a better glide ratio and better flair maybe even could extend the tail sail with some carbon fiber stilts of some sort.
ur right I think to land you would just fly up before you land to slow you down but you would need to be really really percise ur going really fast and maybe you would need to fly upwards 2 or 3 times before landing sort of like bird ony birds do it on the first try but I am guessing a human with that speed would need to slow down a lot to land safely
@peacemakersilo E=mc2 is the problem. Creating the type up thrust you're talking about on a 200lb man going over 100kmph and doing so using just a suit I believe is impossible.
I think if you dig a big hole, fill it with foam rubber, and land in it, that would work. Or maybe wear shoes that have really large springs on the bottom......
I'll think some more about this. I think I almost have it figured out.
@shortnr I envisioned him having some sort of hook.
there is some shot i remeber of a guy skimming a snow covered face it pretty much looked like at that moment he could have touched down and pulled a landing the slope was perfectly matched to his angle
you're going to have to come in near flat to the ground, then somehow keep from tumbling. Are you going near terminal velocity? That might be tough unless you can scrub off some speed before touchdown. Then you're going to have to be wearing leathers so you don't get road rash as you slide to a stop. Might as well just use a hang glider. A wing suit has such a small area the glide ratio is just not that good.
@gt40f I've been keeping up with this for a while and my guess is that a horizontal landing is very problematic so they'll have a steeply slanted landing strip. Also the wing suit I bet will have a way to expand just before landing -- not exactly a parachute, but suddenly larger square footage to slow flight considerably. That's just my semi-educated guess. Leathers? Yes, and padding too. I have no doubt that it can and will be done one way or another. Just hope nobody dies in the process.
@Technotron42 i noe right like a get a life or at least try it then you can judge but no they rather bitch and moan like its there child jumping off the plane
I can imagin that if he adds some wheels (somehow) onto both the upper and lower parts of the body (maybe 2 on chest and 1 on either thigh) he may be able to land on the ground whilst moving forward at 100 miles an hour. The only thing is that an impact of 30 - 40 miles per hour dropping downwards would give a potentially nasty injury...other than that, heaven only knows what he's going to come up with to land safely.
I suppose the most feasable way to land would to create a big 100-200ft tower supporting a landing ramp. sort of like a huge slip and slide, or one of those inflatable slides that are deployed from commercial aircraft to allow passengers to slip off the plane to safety.
If they made it really soft and gave it a steep slope im sure you could pull off a decently graceful landing.
you're right, it didnt look like he was that close to the statue, but i've seen other videos of him flying with his outstretched arms inches from cliff faces and the sides of buildings.
@gruff5 That is true, but I also believe when he flew "the crack" he came within about 15ft from the camera man who was standing below him.. so the proximity is achievable, but judging it at 120mph whilst concentrating on the line of sight etc wouldn't be so easy, hence the easy mistake ..
@gruff5 I agree that his estimation of the distances is a little...generous. I can understand that it is difficult to gauge distances accurately at 80-100mph as well though. All that being said, he's reasonably accurate, and I am excited to see him do it! =D
I suppose if anybody can do it Jeff Corliss could. He looks like a tall, lanky person, probably long legs & arms that may have the best chance of improvising as an airframe for his intended purpose.
I heard somewhere that at the slowest with a wingsuit you are only falling at about 30mph i suppose if you were going that speed when you hit the ground it would be survivable, I don't think anyones gonna try it though... Also to be going slow vertically you would have to be going faster horizontally so you would probarbly grate your face off whilst sliding along the floor.

I have some question about psychology:
(1) Why do we love sky diving?
(2) Why do we like to take danger-challenge suah as sky diving?
(3) What kind of feelings and sensation do we enjoy when we sky dive?
(4) How can sky diving benefit a person's well-being (mentally and physically), especially females?
