  • Lots of work with that little belt sander and grinder, reminds me of when I first started making knives. Loooking Good, keep it up bro.

  • Thank you for posting this. I'm inspired to experiment with this idea and one thing I will try is to use layers of silk. Being thinner than denim I expect I'll have to use more layers but I suspect a couple of scarves or a shirt from Good Will will provide enough material.

  • Thank you for sharing, great vids. I am going to give this a try. Really like how it turned out. Thumbs up.

  • great vid thanks for the info

  • Great Video...Loved the way it ended up looking...Thank you for the tips...

  • Man awesome video! You've inspired me to try and make some custom grip panels for my Ruger Mk III pistol. Off to the hardware store!!!

  • @playdrums Great. Make sure you let me know how it turns out.

  • Thanks for the quick response. I guess I better get to work.

  • Great video, thanks. Do you apply any sort varnish or oil once the micarta is buffed? I'm having trouble getting the colors to really pop on mine.

  • @jonindenver All I do is sand with finer and finer grits, finishing with a worn out 600 (400 would probably work as well) and then buff with a clean wheel and white buffing compound.

  • Where'd you get that knife blank from because that is exactly what I've been looking for!

  • @guardians38 Something I picked up at a gun show many years ago. Since I started making knives I don't use blanks anymore. There are quite a few knife making supply places on the web that sell knife blanks.

  • @guardians38 Hey Guardian I have gotten a few good blanks from this guy on Ebay... his seller id is "premiumknifesupply.inc" check him out... :)

  • Awesome haha ima try black with grey an green denim an see how that turns out

  • Thank you for the review

  • wow man looks great! im using your videos as my guide now

  • That is beautiful man great work

  • I Made Micarta Out Of The Little Circles From A Hole Punch....Long day!

  • please where can I buy one grinder like the one you use?

  • @facatube I bought this one at Harbor Freight.

  • I was very interested in your process. Any pictures or better yet video of the finished knife?

  • @nls8520 No other pictures of that knife. The blade was not one that I made - just used it for the demonstration. If you look at the vid I posted titled A Few Of My Knives you'll see some that I made with the Crashcarta scales.

  • @CrashbladeKnives Crashcarta? never heard of that.

  • Thanks so much for the video. After shopping around, its easy to see why custom for scales are so expensive. Even the mass produced ones are still time consuming to make.

But after much research, I have decided to make my own Micarta. I already have the power and handtools. There are just so many infinite designs possible.

    Cheers

  • That was great :) I'm just starting on knife making and I don't have such power tools... Yet , but i will give it a shot eventually with what i have . Going to hunt for mats tomorrow. Thank you for Sharing :)

  • @mortifitsio Power tools just make it a little faster. A file and sandpaper will do the job for you. Good luck.

  • SOOO COOOOLLLLLL

  • Thanks for the quick reply and suggestions. I'm going to give it a shot and see how it turns out.

  • Wow. Looks really nice!

  • crash, made some black micarta with much of the same products you used with the exception of the material, I used ribbon 2 1/4 in wide 100% polyester. Once it cured I tried to clean it up with my belt sander and it did not sand as easy as what your vid showed. Also it lifted the fibers and gave it a hairy look, any ideas? I have a custom made blank I am finishing up and don't want to put this on if it will not finish out properly.

  • @cre8tivesolutions Try using progressively finer belts. I start with 80 grit for most of the shaping and then progress through 120, 220, 400, 600 and then buff it out. After the initial shaping with the 80 grit it does have a "hairy" look and feel.

  • That was freaking awesome! I watched all three and enjoyed the journey you shared with us! Thanks!

  • @jacksondoughty Thanks for watching. Hope they were helpful.

  • that is amazing

  • Thanks so much for sharing. I learned a lot. :)

  • @lesamourai777 Glad it was helpful.

  • what did you use to polish it? just a buffing wheel and some rough or what? thanks and keep it up... i made some black denim scales but theyre blue from sanding and i wanna get em black again.

  • @huckleberry803 I started the rough sanding with an 80 grit belt then progressed through 120, 220, 400 and 600. I did finish it off with the buffer and some white buffing compound.

  • I just finished watching your three micarta how to videos, and I have got to compliment you on a job well done. Ive got three knife blanks being shipped to me and you have made up my mind for me as to which handle material I am going to be using. HOME MADE MICARTA all the way. I cant wait till I can get started on them.I really appreciate you posting these videos ,they have been very helpful to me. THANK YOU.

  • @RiffRaff1062 Glad the videos were helpful. Make sure to let me know when you post vids or pics of your new handles.

  • This was the best knife handle making vid ive watched on youtube and ive watched quite alot of them... I especially liked the homemade micarta... its funny.. ive always known how its made but never attemped it myself...Nice tip on the copper pin material and gorrilla glue option vs epoxy for scales... lastly im currently working with the same 1x30 belt sander and my buffer is a very old Craftsman 6" unit so it was especially nice to see this project being completed with hobby size equipment

  • Exelent Vid. Well done. Thank You. Do you work with camel bone scales? If so, can I pay you to install a set for me ? I've been trying to find someone with your talent to no avail. I've got a very nice Artic Skinner Blank that needs your attention...!

    DanoftheIneedhelp.

  • What a great start to finish tutorial. Thank you for sharing with the community.

  • COOL video, you made a subscribe out of me.

  • Oh my, that is quite cool looking. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, mate. ;-)

  • that turned out alot nicer than I thought it would. Very nice work, Im gonna make some tommorrow. Thanks for the knowledge and keep up the awesome work. Keep the old arts ALIVE!!!

  • I worked in the custom shop at Busse Combat knives for 7 years. We made our own grinders, we built our own building, but it never would`ve occured to me to make our own Micarta. You`re the man!

  • Very informative, thanks.

  • beautifull finish product

  • I am sure if every third strip. if you were to place the strips the opposite way so the lighter side faces up instead of the darker ones you would have a more diverse grain pattern. So the pattern would be three dark, three light, then you would have a more natural grain look.

  • what are the brands of resin and hardener that you used and where did you get them. I have repaired several knives in the past but I have never made my own grips and I would really like to try it.

  • very nice knife. i like the copper pins with the darker blue

  • awesome video series!!! that handle looks professional and store bought. If you ever figure out how to pattern it you should show that too. that kind of stuff along with patterning damascus blows my mind. great work again man. keep it up and thanks for the great videos. ill never throw away another pair of old jeans.

  • Thanks Crash. This is really nice work. You're a very talented guy!

  • You should sell this idea ^^

  • @emel60 Nah - just like to share the knowledge.

  • @CrashbladeKnives well share it and get money :D just joking, nice of you to do this. will try it out my self and i'll note you the results.

  • Not bad man. Ever tried patterning it?

  • @ArtistBlade1972 I have not tried patterning. I'm still in the learning process - kind of trial and error. It's definitely something I'll look into. Thanks.

  • @CrashbladeKnives You can do pretty much any pattern you can in damascus relatively easily. I'm sure there's tons of other things you can do with it too. I just usually make it to match whatever damascus I make for a particular knife. Check out my video damascus demo slide show for a sample...

  • @ArtistBlade1972 I have watched it. Thank you. Very good stuff.

  • That's beautiful man!

  • Very informative and well done videos enjoyed it very much.

  • Nice work Crash!

  • LOVE the final result. I'm sold!
