So difficult for mezzos not to make vocal displays for the sake of technique in Rossini. Joyce almost makes us believe in the expressivity of the aria, and the reality of the rôle. Brava!
Joyce Di Donato's singing and her voice is more exciting and is simply a lot better in person. There are a lot of things that the microphone does not pick up.
Saw her debut role as Adalgisa here in Salzburg. Heartbreaking.
I'm a great Bartoli fan, I think she's the best Cenerentola when agility is concerned. That said, I do admire Joyce DiDonato, she's so charming and has a truly great voice!! I love the very end of this staging, so magical...
THIS is how to do a "different" staging of an opera! As long as you keep the spirit and emotions of the original work, you can hardly go wrong. If this production can do that with giant human-sized rats onstage (a great idea), those hideous Salzburg Festivals that feature stagings that go blatantly against the texts have no excuse!
American opera lovers are a bit conservative as far as staging is concerned, aren't they? That staging is ok, it's even nice but what's wrong with salzburg settings?
Joyce is my favorite mezzo, also she is a down to earth, nice Irish girl (well, Irish-American), too!! I have seen this live on 18th January when a lot of the cast were hit by flu. She sung that night despite of being suffering from flu, but she sung really well that I only know she was suffering from flu because there was announcement at the start of the performance. "Nacqui all'affano" at finale was more than perfect, it was moving!!
DiDonato's voice is bigger than Bartoli's, according to people who have heard both live.
Her diction is flawless, her voice is agile, she's very good at acting [but this goes for both of them]. She's such a charming woman, loves to meet her fans...
I daresay she and Bartoli are the best mezzos alive. I love what DiDonato is doing to Handel [see her Dopo Notte!].
Not only is this woman hellaciously talented, she is a joy to work with. I had the privilege of working on this very opera with her in Kansas City (I do wigs and makeup) and she was such an amazing person to be around. Best of luck Miss Joy!!
What a pity this Cinderella is just dreaming, for she deserved a whole world of fairytales because of that great singing! I dare to say DiDonato has already reached an artistic level comparable to the greatest mezzos of the past and to the best Cenerentolas ever (Berganza, Simionato, Valentini Terrani, and - why should we despite the present? - Bartoli). Her warmth, true joy and bravura in singing and seamless coloratura are almost unsurpassable!
I am inclined to say that as a 77 year old opera fan that we don't have singing like that today --- hey wait a minute -- that marvelous singing is of today, and I hope of many tomorrows. Lucky us in Houston. Miss JdD likes our company has done 2 productions so far and is to do Beatrice & Benedict next season.
I couldnt agree more. I am sick of people from the previous generations of opera saying no one equals the greats of the past! I think all the singers are equal on their own merit :D
also, we as the new generation have our own singers. Unfortunately we can't go see pavarotti or callas or price or any of those other GREAT singers all the time at the met, its okay to have new great singers of our generation!
to me as a young singer, these new great singers of my generation are the people to watch!
Joyce has a warm personality that comes through in her singing. Technically secure, she can do anything she wants with her voice. I dare say she has the best trills I've heard on a mezzo, half step and whole step. I hope the recording companies get their act together and capture all of this fine singing! This video made my day. Thanks so much for posting.
Beautifully done. The staging, though, is a bit disconcerting. Where did everyone go, particularly the prince? Why is she left, broom in hand, alone with what seem to be mice? Her incredible rendition of this aria is marred by this peculiar staging.
I saw the production twice in HOuston with JdD -- and sitting up close it was a wonder and sitting far back it was kinda dull.
To answer your question - it is the conceit of the production that in 30 seconds the stage is restored to the house as in Scene 1 -- meaning: it was all a dream Too bad Cindy, still no prince.
I am not familiar with Joyce but I am now a fan! Marvellous technique.

I adore Bartoli, but the problem is that she is so charming and happy that she scarcely inspires pity in the Cenerentola role.

Why is she alone at the end? Shouldn't Ramiro be there, too?

Cecilia has her thing, but Joyce has nothing to envy her... She has it all and probably more. To bad she's not as marketed like Cecilia.
