How do you sculpt your body using weight machines without adding bulk? I have an hourglass figure but I'm scared of using the gym equipment and ending up with a very boyish figure. I have been doing mainly cardio with no resistance on the elliptical machine as well as using the weight machines to work all muscle groups but my midsection.

Hi Nicole, i will be releasing a workout video next year addressing those exact questions but until then don't shy away from high resistance on some of the weight machines just lift about 75% of your max so if you lift 60lbs on the leg extensions at 10 reps then lift 45 at about 16 reps and work your legs and triceps two days on and one day off. you don't have to lift for more than 15 or 20 mins max.

This type of lifting is used by ice skaters and other athletes who need long/non bulky leg muscles but still have to have strength and tone.A speed skater trains in the opposite fashion, they have to have the powerful developed thigh group to propel them back and forth through a small distance.

as for the waist: twisting , alternating toe touches,elbow to knee and Gyrokenisis (mat work which you can do on dvd) will take inches off of even a naturally thick waisted person. good luck and thanks for watching. Once again pilates is ok just do twists and stretches in between exercises. pilates mat work is only supposed to be SIX at most of an exercise. Bikram, Kundalini yoga is fabulous for the waist but Astanga/vinyasa flow is the worst, it creates a box-like torso w/all the linear reps.

I would only advise heavy duty pilates and weight machines for your abs if you've had a C-section or abdominal surgery (and you have an all clear from your doctor) because making sure those muscles heal after birth (as you may know there is only about a nine month window so they can heal properly)is more important than a tiny waist. You can always go back and sculpt a waistline later
