Bit surprised to see SS soldiers on Crete. I've never heard of this, is it true to the story? and wouldn't he be executed as a spy if he put on their camouflage smock and wore a German Stalhelm?

Oh Dear.

Cheesy dialogue and scenes, ham acting and the sorts accents that didn't exist in 1941. And it looks shot in overcast NZ instead of sunny Crete. They might have been better off not attempting this.

Just read the book about Crete by anthony beevor. People should know that the kiwis took the brunt of the stupidity in that fight, and did the best. Particularly the maoris. But out of ~2000 dead, half were new zealanders. Why? Cause they fought even when no one told them to. The officers failed in Crete, but the soldiers didn't. In the end, it was individuals who proved themselves, not ideas. Sad waste of human life, that fight.

My grandmother fought with the resistance at WW2 here in Greece. He told me a story about a NZ soldier that i though it was nice to be written in this Video.When the Stukas were hammering the Partizans-NZ forces almost all hide into houses or trees,only one NZ run into an open spot and climb on a vehicle and opened fire with his Bren to the bombers.A stuka start diving to bomb the vehicle and himself.All of em shouting to him to run but he was just shooting at that Stuka. He shoot it down...

The rifle used in this film was an Enfield No.1 mk 4. That rifle replaced the earlier Mk IIIs. I don't think any of the Brits at Crete had the later rifle. I have one of each and shoot them occasionally at the gun club. I load all the .303 ammo myself. My mk 4 was made at the Long Branch arsenal in Canada in 1944 and is pretty accurate.

Wow, this is a good short film.

And there were no SS in Crete, the SS were on Mainland Europe fighting the Western Front. Over 1.2 million SS members and they killed more Soldiers than anyone in the war.

I feel very proud that my country was part of the British Empire. People often forget the role of the Empire during the wars. My family are South African and we also played our part, just like the New Zealanders, Aussies, Canadians etc.

There are so many stories to be told about this relatively unknown chapter of WW2...The struggle on the mountains with the Greek resistance and the heroic defense of the island during the airdrops, the burning of the villages by the nazis and the allies fighting the axis in gorges and fields across the island...wonderful!

Part 2 as the comment was cut short. It appears to read that the civillian population was responsible for the later German reprisals. Not intended in case any hate filled comments follow. Certain actions on ALL sides did count as breaches of the Geneva codes. Emotions, massacres and devastation will result in this. Partisan actions are the real result of invading and brutalising a proud and defiant people. Vietnam, the ethnic Karen population in Burma, Afghanistan etc. Anyhow, keep filming!

Who procured your costumes for the Fallschirmjager? They are wearing Waffen SS insignia at 3:08 minutes. Major issue as the Waffen SS DID NOT participate in the invasion of Crete! Gebirgsjager, Luftlande Regiments and other Luftwaffe units may have been mixed up in research. Interesting perspective which saw large scale suffering and slaughter on ALL sides. Cretans were responsible for atrocities perpetrated against captured and/or wounded men as well as the later reprisals from German units.

The starting is filmed in Christchurch (which is supposed to double as a Nelson farm) and the rest is filmed on Banks Peninsula. We had 1 German re-enactor involved but are definitely looking for more for future episodes.....and the feature film.

I remember some academic complaining how Hulme dressing up as a german was wrong... didn't hear him complain about the germans using the locals as human shields
