i think where i live (the uk) have it down to a tee, you learn basic subjects untill you are 13 then you choose your own path, college starts at 16 then you can choose from 1-4 subjects youd like to study, for example i chose art and graphic design :)
im a junior in college and pretty much everything i do is for college. My workload consists of 5 AP classes as my 2 electives are jazz band and concert/marching band. The workload is so intense it even has my dad sometimes wondering why we have so many pointless projects
Many people don't know what they want to do by the time they have reached freshman year of college. Where do you think an undeclared/undecided major comes from?
You supposedly did fairly well in high school. What about students that naturally struggle?
@kingofkendall high school is not purely an academic educational experience. ie. Education also comes in the form of learning social responsibilities.
In addition, time management is most definitely a gradual learning process. Imagine Jr. High/Middle School graduates trying to manage a college workload.
Just b/c you knew you liked math in 8th grade, doesn't mean everyone else will. Many do and will change in a way that may or may not cause a shift in hobbies and interests.
not everyone knows what they want to do by eighth grade. what they do is prepare you for any career you may or may not want to pursue. i am an advertising major in college. nothing i've learned in school has prepared specifically for this, but since i know how to properly write, how to crunch numbers, and various pieces of history i am able to create successful projects. also. if the we dont know general knowledge facts, then we would be ignorant to them. ignorance does not prosper.
I believe that after 8th grade the student should have a choice. Like I am not really wanting to be an average person but you make a pretty good point, it should very well be considered in our society.
@Technoguy3 I think that some high schools are great and some simply are not. I'm lucky to be going to a very good highschool, but i dont like the way that i'm being taught somethings.
I understand what you where saying about learning things that are only relevant to life & that information is all available online now. BUT I think the idea is to pass on knowledge as you are learning in school such as history or science to let you learn the basics & to let you experience a range of knowledge so when you get to college or university you can go into the direction that you want!
@Aaronmc14 Thanks for the comment, but as i said in the video by 8th grade you ve already taken a good chunk of science and history classes. Weren't we always told that the younger we are the easier it is to learn things? so if you didn't like or understand history or science by 8th grade odds are you wouldn't like or understand it in high school.
In Canada grade 8-12 is high school. 8 and 9 are basically normal school, then 10 to 12 is focussed more on getting ready for graduation, college or university, and work.

Thats why schools have a career center/tech center. Unfortunately, going to these is looked down upon as its usually where the failures go.

You really do take education for granted.
