I respectfully disagree with kevcantstop on this one... as far as javert is concerned I have never seen anyone do the role as well as Philip Quast. In my opinion he becomes him and does not just act
Javert is great! I think the Valjean needs to sound less over the top, though. The whole thing just turns into a bit of a shouting match...too bad you can't always get the time to rehearse all the little things.
I agree he's a bit too young, plus he doesn't look big and strong enough his voice isn't quite commanding enough - apart from "I am warning you Javert", I love how he just goes for it then.
Does anyone have the video for this whole show WITH Robert Hunt and Drew Sarich as Javert and Valjean respectively? I've been trying to find the full thing and am having no luck.

oh my god drew sucks as Valjean he is way too young it looks so silly. He is a good Jesus but why on earth does a 33 year old man sings Valjean so he must be in jail sinc his early childhood...seems as if he gets castet in parts he can not play verry often...I just say Rudolf in vienna sucks but not only because of him!
Well, he was in jail for 19 years. So he would have been in jail since he was 14. That's not too hard to believe. He was imprisoned for stealing bread, and Gavroche stole food all the time, and he's a lot younger than 14.
It actually seems quite plausible. One of my friends has a 5 year old sister and a 31 year old sister. That's now. Back in those times, families had as many children as they could, since most of them wouldn't reach adulthood. Girls were encouraged to have children as soon as they could. His sister could have been as young as 14, and have had a child.
I agree, I do love Drew (esp. as Armand) but he can't play a role like this, his voice sounds so silly in this role and in Javert's role. He is too young to put it plainly, but still very talented
Wow! I wanted to see Drew in this so badly. But he left by the time I went to Les Miz. At least I got to see, Robert Hunt, & Lea Salonga! ROBERT HUNT IS MY JAVERT! o.o
There's something weird. When J sings: "You know nothing of Javert/I was born inside a jail" it's somehow higher, off-key or dunno. After it he goes back to his normal tune. But I've heard this from McCarthy, too, so it must be some new changing.
Otherwise: good. Not looking at each other at the final line: bad point.
Well, if you listen to Javert's Suicide, the whole end part was done exactly like What Have I Done, with the high notes instead of low notes. I guess they readjusted it for high baritones/tenors, because Sarich (crazy tenor) did Javert.
I think the Javert was trying to match Sarich's climax in the lines before. Also, they're not supposed to look at each other in the final line. Valjean is speaking to Fantine and Javert to Valjean, even though it's a unison.
Sarich's Valjean won me over here. Very convincing. His is the most believable. This is a Valjean that definitely spent a hella long time behind bars.
I was just saying, accent-wise, I don't like Valjean being American. Sarich is good, I'd just prefer it if he sung in an English accent (but not a ridiculous one). It's just my personal choice. If you were going to say "Valjean'd be French", the French recordin sounds good. I'm just saying that I prefer other accents over American in Les Mis.

These guys are a joke next to Gary Morris and the incomparable Phillip Quast. This plays like a high school play...Drew Sarich is too whiny and squeaky anyway.
I don't want to over-run this video's comments with talk of slash because I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I must say, I thought this duo indeed had their moments when I saw them. ;)
On another note: I adore both Drew and Robert, and their Confrontation is great!
I'm so glad I got to see Drew in this! This voice does something to my insides.

that has nothing to do with my argument, he was 14 and had a sister with a child? mhh seems not so plausible...

Who's Javert? Is that Rob Hunt?
JSanzLesMis421 3 years ago
I do love a good bit of stage-fighting. Remember when I saw it in London when Valjean starts walking away, Javert muttered: "Oh no you don't!" lol
When Valjean smacks him, it's always good when they go down like a ton of bricks ^^
