But one of the greatest causes of slavery was poverty. So rather than the bible condemning ownership of an individual, it condemns enslavement and advocates charity.

People burdened by debt used to sell themselves and their families in exchange for food, clothing and shelter. If slavery had been illegal back then, thousands and thousands of people would have starved to death.
