  • This is the problem with licensed MMOs. They eventually get too expensive, like SWG. The licensing bill comes in and it's just too darn much.

  • I regret not being able to play this game.. i really wanted to try it but man, now I can't so sad wish they would re invent it with a company that is great on video games

  • @LazyNightz My biggest regret is that I recorded about 40 or 50 gigabytes of MxO videos with Fraps, then the external drive I was keeping them on died. And stupid me, I formated the thing just because my computer told me to.

If only I had known about Seagate File Recovery at the time, all those videos wouldn't have been lost to oblivion like that. :(

  • This game looks like it's worth playing even with the graphics. Too bad it's dead and the only emulator I could find for it, Mxoemu, And It's buggy as fuck. You just clicking something wrong and everything bugs up. Jump doesn't even work.

  • after login the game says the file cleints has not bla bla bla

  • Man I wanted to play this game damn

  • remember when MMO's actually TRIED?

  • @kamiazee Yeah. MxO had the best combat system I've ever seen in a MMO; it really made you think on your feet, and fast. And being able to visit almost every floor in every skyscraper really showed me how much Warner Brothers cared about MxO while they were overseeing its development; they wanted to stuff as much detail into Mega City as they possibly could. Why they chose to doom MxO by selling it off to SOE, I'll never know.

  • @BloodyBay i cant believe they shut it down i didnt know about matrix online until today, i really wish they would bring it back if only i could play it just once.....

  • Man, this takes me back. Good times

  • omg I want to play this again. I have the game but now that I can't play it I WANT TO DO IT EVEN MORE!

Why did this had to happen? *cries*

  • need a cd key to play this game?

  • @shadoVerklock Need a time machine. Read the description already.

  • Jace Hall should be proud :)

  • I found out about this game the day AFTER it was shut down. Bad luck for me.

  • It it still possible to play it? I know the servers are down and all but... it just looks way too awesome to forget about it.

  • @ofnir123 In a way, you can. Get on a search engine like Google or Yahoo and you'll find that there are two, maybe three Matrix Online emulators in the works, crawling towards completion but presently playable. MxO apparently touched quite a few coders and programmers who aren't ready to close the book on MxO just yet. Find one and give it a try.

  • ive read around that theres an emulator for this game.

i know the server is shut down but can you still rome around and creat your own char?

  • @redbrixeli You can create your own characters in the emulators, yeah. I recreated my Zionite Karate Grandmaster from the original MxO using Morpheus' emulator. I still had to save the character on my end, though, because the emulator's server didn't save characters. That might have changed in the past six months, though.

  • @BloodyBay so using these "emulator's" can you still be with other players? or is it like an online world with no one in it, or sumthin o.O

  • @TheCha0sC0ntr0ller Multiple players patched into the emulator can meet each other. The one I was testing didn't have the combat system implemented yet, so we just had a bunch of us standing around in Mara Central, talking and doing emotes.

I really should check back in with those guys and see if the combat system is in yet....

  • @BloodyBay planning on sharing this emulator soon? :)

  • @KonanNai It's not my baby. But you can Google it. There are two or three of them, last time I checked.

  • its like the same gameplay as SWG in away.

  • the combat was amazig..i miss it

  • @dragonbrad98 It was the best combat system I've ever seen in a MMOG. Attack, block, counterattack, grab and throw...it was almost like watching a dance of pain. I have yet to see any other MMOG come close to it (though at least Age of Conan tries to incorporate active defense as well as attack).

I still have to tip my hat to all the Matrix Online players who knew how to take advantage of the environment and master the off-the-wall triangle kick. I never could pull that off.

  • @BloodyBay haha yep...god i loved this game lol

  • lol this is like runescape, wow, pirates of the carribean online, and matrix smashed together :)

  • Soo the game does'nt exist anymore ??

  • :( i remember being a kid and watched all the matrix films. The last one had a trailer for this game if im correct. I asked my parents if i could play it. But they said no. Some years later (2009) i looked up the game on the internet... And to my surprise... It was closed... I was so sad. I never got around to trying it out... If only this game had lived longer maybe a couple more years... Oh well... Now it remains in the players memories and the fans of matrix who never got around to playing it

  • At least I got some time with this game. But I still really miss it. :-(

  • i wish i got to play it.

  • wow u can creat some sexy girls with this programm with big bootys.

  • @StrictlyBG Ectomorph, endomorph or mesomorph. Whatever suits your tastes, I reckon.

  • I can see why this game failed miserably.

  • @ericorenato88 My video shows Sony's executive meddling and neglect for the license? Wow. I'm better than I thought.

  • Comment removed

  • wait didnt it shut down

  • I can't understand how WoW is still up and running compared to this...

ok i can, I just don't want to.

  • @mastyleyo Yeah, I have to hand it to Blizzard: they could sell a fresh turd with all that aggressive hype and advertising they do. WoW's doing well because Blizzard got up in everyone's faces shouting "WOOHOO! COME PLAY WORLD OF WARCRAFT! IT'S LIKE SEEING GOD! WOOWOO!" Meanwhile, Sony bought The Matrix Online and hid it under a rock. And it died.

(See that, ericorenato88? The game still managed to live for over four years, despite Sony's neglect. That's not "failing miserably.")

  • it doen`t say it in the description

  • @themsmproduction It doesn't say WHAT in the description? That The Matrix Online no longer exists? That it ceased to exist at the stroke of midnight after July 31st, 2009? That it's impossible to play this MMO game because it no longer exists?

  • wow... wanna know what really sucks? i haven't even heard about this game until the day after it was canceled :(

how did this get canceled though? the combat was amazing

  • @darkHALO1000 What killed The Matrix Online was largely Sony Online Entertainment's mismanagement. They gave MxO very little advertising from the moment they acquired it (and the advertising soon shrink to zero), they cut more and more developers from the team or alienated them into quitting, they shrunk MxO's budget to the benefit of non-licensed MMOs like EQ2 and then they expected MxO to remain profitable in spite of all that. And when the predictable failure happened, SOE pulled the plug.

  • @BloodyBay It was fine when the The Wachowski Brothers was in charge then they stop working on it. Sold to to SOE and then Morpheus died. Yeah, It pretty died after SOE came about. Also, I forgot which one but their was a certain combat class that beats all others. I'm not saying in opinion. I really mean it. As I remember it had something that made it always win. I don't remember the game much but I think it was something about numbers in battle. So, Story died after SoE and combat WAS dead.

  • @Noureddin91 Ah I remember the class had high numbers when using attacks. Cause in combat who ever has the higher number hits and the lower number gets hit. Sorry, I forgot. I haven't played for a while. Also, It didn't change in the end either. I remember it being complained in the matrix online forums(The ones that's connected to the game).

  • wow... wanna know what really sucks? i haven't even heard about this game until the day after it was canceled :(

how did this get canceled though? i looked at some vids, and the combat was amazing

  • They seriously stuck with those voiceovers?

Wow, The Matrix has the potential for amazing games. Yet every one released is shit beyond imagination. This one is one of the worst, (not as bad as Enter The Matrix though. That was truly shameful).

  • were i dowload this game?

  • @SmokeyBMF In the video description. Read it.

  • This is pretty cool for a matrix game.

  • man this really sucks i read about this when i was a bit smaller than i am now lol and never really thought much of it and i only thought of it recently and thought "im gonna play this game!" but after reading the description my hopes and dreams were ruined :( it looked really good too

  • i had a lot of fun with this game for the first few months... i will never forget the first time i got attacked by an agent... epic times. rip MxO

  • lol i kinda find it funny even though world of warcraft updates everyweek with a random story board seems like everyone a sucker and wasteing there money on that like example star trek online or champaign online has updates every month so there gettings ideas on the forums

  • yea blame sony there was other games could of been remove like everquest :/ but why mxo really that game good combat system at v1 after they change it slightly boring and allso the character customizer is old but still looks damn good but sadly they had other stuff that could of came out but never happen becuse lack of staff.

  • @Novajone I agree. MxO could have been far more profitable than, say, Planetside, but Sony kept the latter and tossed the former. MxO had one of the most gorgeous combat systems that I've ever seen, and their character creation could have become even better over time with a little TLC from the staff. We also could have had oft-rumored additions like melee weapons, driveable vehicles, vehicular combat and play areas in the Real outside the Matrix, but no. Thanks a heap, Sony.

  • @Novajone What if somebody found out how to mod The Path Of Neo, and added multiplayer, and everything MxO had for free? With a new engine and stuff?

  • fuck sony... WE WANT MATRIX ONLINE BACK!

  • @W00CKEY I hear you. Don't we all? :-(

I have ten bucks saying that SOE's bungling kills The Agency too. It has a pretty snazzy trailer, but the trailer doesn't show any of the gameplay...and there could be a reason for that. Given Sony's track record, I wouldn't be surprised if The Agency starves to death in under three years, and that's only because the fans chomping for a superspy game will keep it afloat long after Sony's gone chasing after some other shiny thing.

  • @BloodyBay try a private server

  • @gmosell Good idea. Can you show me one?

  • you know why do men always make girl chars? lol

  • @dude292foman Because we like to watch that ass wiggle. Why else? :-p

  • I WANNA PLAY THIS GAME!!!!!!!!

  • @Sleeperkill Unfortunately, Sony killed The Matrix Online last year. But if you go to mxoemu(dot)info you can try out the emulator and see how far along their progress at reconstructing MxO has come. So far, it's looking pretty promising...not at all bad for having no support from MxO's developers and being less than a year into the project.

  • Well don't be your money that matrix online is completely dead, I know there's a work around to playing it again, its Matrix online Emulator, but its still in the works, but they gave ppl some stuff to jack back in the matrix but you can only roam around but when its fully done it will be just like it never had happened with the shut down and they set up only 8 servers, they basicly pay the servers we do not have to pay to play it its all free now.

  • i never got to play it :( why it go offline

  • There were a number of contributing factors, I think. The less-than-warm reception of the two Matrix sequels may have cooled public zeal in picking up MxO, Warner Brothers launched MxO with far too many servers anticipating a fanbase which was slow to come, the ensuing costs and profit losses led to WB selling MxO to SOE and SOE (who has a dismal track record, especially with managing other people's licenses) let MxO languish without advertising and with minimal support for years.

  • hey BloodyBay you may not know me in the days of SOE Days when matrix was still live, but my name in Matrix is "Gabumon, level 50. Duelist" I hope i see you in-game when they get that emulator finished.

  • @Gabumon404 Well, unfortunately the emulator has run into a bit of a snag. Rajkosto and Morpheus had a falling out, so they broke up and went their separate ways, and each of them took some of the lesser developers with him. So now we have two smaller teams of devs working on two separate emulators.

I guess it's going to be a slower going before we get our emulator now. And I wonder which of the two teams is going to finish the emulator first. :-/

  • Over those years, SOE continued to slowly kill their could-have-been golden goose through a number of lay-offs and terminations among whatever developers, game masters and whatever support personnel remained; when Ben "Rarebit" Chamberlain (MxO's lead developer and backbone) was dismissed, MxO's fate was pretty much sealed; MxO got locked into a death spiral and SOE pulled the plug on 4/31/2009.

  • @BloodyBay A perfect example of why pay to play games costing 12-14 dollars a month are a bad investment, It's one thing to waste time, but to waste money only makes those who do it a fool. These companies have basically figured out the perfect solution to get rich quick while ripping of their costumers. Games like World of Warcraft have not made much improvement since it's first years, only the fact that they have more players and are making more money, each year.

  • @HuntersX2NCreations ...and yet you have the good, viable MMOGs like City of Heroes/Villains, which have monthly fees and show it by continuing to evolve.

People aren't fools for paying for MMOGs; the problems lie with the companies managing and developing the MMOGs. I paid my monthly dues for MxO back in '05 and '06, and I don't regret paying one penny of that because the game had a soul. The problem came when SOE fired the staff and let MxO atrophy to death. The playerbase isn't to blame.

  • Given Sony's utter lack of respect for licenses and their dismal track record of support, promotion and distribution (even among some of their own properties), I have to wonder why Star Wars Galaxies hasn't joined MxO in death. SOE must be afraid of George Lucas suing their pants off if that happens, I guess. Maybe the Wachowski brothers should have actually continued caring about their Matrix franchise instead of saying "There, we've told our story, we're done, off we go to oblivion now". <.<

  • Ah man.. I miss this game sooo much. I played this game last year. I loved this. I remember getting chased by agents, leveling by doing missions with level 50s, Jumping on top of extremely high buildings.. I really, really hope they make a private server for this game. I'd actually pay to play this again.

  • Jumping off those extremely high buildings was a blast too. Remember those two huge skyscrapers in Kedemoth, the ones which were so tall you couldn't possibly Hyper-Jump up onto them? I used to take the elevator to the roof, Hyper-Jump just off the edge and just let myself fall. My Operative even got a couple of somersaults in before she hit the ground. :-D

For what it's worth, I'm hangin' with the MxO Emulator project (mxoemu-dot-info). I've recreated all my Redpills so far. It's great!

  • Blocked for mental retardation; I can't understand a word you're saying, but it doesn't sound like anything I want in my channel anyway. Buh-bye.

  • shouldn't she be half bald in the white map?

  • She's not half-bald at all. She just has short-cropped hair and a little ponytail on one side of her head, that's all.

  • Damn... i asked around on other vids, but your video description says it all. That sucks... never even knew Matrix had a MMO. :(

Wonder if they will EVER make a new one... the 'Matrix city' looks like a badass place to free roam. Hope that all that played this enjoyed it, while I hope they make something new for Matrix (game and/or movie).

  • MxO has a Wikipedia article too. As usual, it's getting "critiqued" by somebody who really needs to unclench his sphincters and relax a little, but the meat of the article is still there.

But then, it is just a Wikipedia article. The only way to really understand what the game was like is to ask the people who were there...or to have been there yourself. But check out that MxO Emulator. It's looking very promising. :-)

  • Unsuccessful troll is unsuccessful. Buh-bye.

  • Its better off dead. Amazing memories though.

  • Better off dead? Then why are people trying to create an emulator of it?

MxO died because Sony and Warner Brothers stopped pulling from the top. And once they stopped supporting MxO, promoting it and whittling down MxO's staff (including the invaluable developer Rarebit), what chance did MxO really have?

  • ...stopped promoting it and started whittling down MxO's staff...

There. I guess that would be the most grammatically correct way to put it. Sorry about that.

  • whats MxO? is this games still available?

  • People really should read a YouTube video's Video Description before they comment.... <.<

The Matrix Online was shut down July 31, 2009 after four years of service. So it's no longer available. But it was a great ride while it lasted.

  • God i miss this game :(

  • i always wanted to play this game but never got around to it. now i guess i never will. that's what i get for procrastinating i guess.

  • Well, take solace in this: a band of code-crazy MxO devotees is making a MxO emulator over at mxoemu-dot-info. At this time it's purely single-player and your actions are limited to moods and emotes and running around, but the team's still working on it. Give them a look. :-)

  • wow ill definitely have a look see thanks 8-D

  • so if u take the blue pill what happens lol

  • You'd get an "Are you sure?" prompt. And if you said "Yes", you'd get booted from the game. But then you could relog, and it was like you had taken the Red Pill instead.

At least, that's what happened when I tried the Blue Pill with EmeraldSkye (my main) back in 2005.

  • Seriously i want to play this game NOW. To bad

  • Well, there's always that emulator that I mentioned above...below...below-above...damn it, YouTube, quit messing with our comment sections already! Somebody tell me how to invert the comment order and put it back the way it was....

  • Now only if VTM can get another game....wait gehenna already happened :(

  • Well, there's always the SECOND World of Darkness. Has anyone heard anything about that WoD MMOG that White Wolf was supposedly working on, or is it just another Duke Nukem Forever? :-/

  • @themanwiththepan

    why cant u?

  • @bpancevski

So...The Matrix Online went offline for the last time at 12:01 AM
