  • I'd be afraid that a stick might go up my bum while lieing on that

  • how do you make that long log fire?

  • @cekinxxx

Make a fire, then wait till it starts producing glowing embers, spread out the embers in two directions to make the "long fire", add small twigs (for starters) on to the embers and keep on adding wood of increasing thickness, then add logs (optional, but recommended) and Bob's your uncle!

If you still have questions (either on this topic, or any other topic), feel free to ask.

  • @Verradonairun thanks a lot, seems like a lot of effort, but it's very useful, what is this bob's my uncle thing lol?

  • @cekinxxx Well, it doesn't have to include a lot of effort. 'spreading the embers in two directions' = kicking the fire out to one side. And then just throw anything that can catch fire on anything that glows/burns.

The 'bob's your uncle'-expression is commonly used in the english language. It means something like 'that's it' or 'there you go' or in this case: 'you're done'.

  • ray mears is a cool guy, like to meet him one day

  • Tried the match lighting thing and burned the shit out of my finger...

  • What knife does he use?

  • @TheCatcherOfDeath its made of metal. yep!

  • @hitachi088 HAHA smart ass are we then :p

  • hey 1 - aex 2 - firewood but you forgot 3 - a knife 0:39

  • Cool Awesome Informational Video...

  • Great shelter tips! Maybe I'll use them on the next episode of Strangers in the Wild!!!

  • If I had a camera crew I would also consider this a quick option for shelter.

  • i hate the new youtube

  • 240p We meet again.

  • I like it but I would think the critters and bugs would to. I seen a story of boy scouts doing one like this and a bear tried to eat a kids head. messed him up but the people were able to scare it off before it was to late.

  • What a nice guy,knows his stuff.

  • Good learning! Check out Extreme Survival Malmoe, if you wanna survive in Sweden.

  • I am watching Ray Mears videos almost every day and i have to say, it`s awsome! The man is a genius. I am 100% sure that it is very important to learn such things and that we also have to bring it with us to the next generation ;)

  • SPARRRTTTAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRR

  • @dunfamalb you didn't bail the British out of any war my friend. First, you didn't even WIN independence. It was settled upon, an agreement. Not a victory. Secondly, WWII, America was one of the last to step in and when they couldnt take the toughest beach, Britain and Canada were deployed and we took it together, shortly after. Ibe lived in America and I can surely tell you that American history only teaches about Americans parts and exaggerates it

  • crap now i have to go search for NottowayMililtia's comment

  • thanks dude! great video...its almost stupid not to think of it...but making those feathers is great for fire!

  • Google can stop playing shit ass you tube videos all over my videos.

  • lol he cutted 50 trees...

  • He made one mistake that I saw.... the lean to shelter is classic, but the crossbeam was to high.... it should only be as high as your armpits. Two reasons for that, warm air raises and it takes more to warm a larger space. Also a heat deflector helps immensely for that type of shelter for that you can use rocks (as long as they haven't been submerged in water), green wet logs, black birch, dirt/sand....

  • @tgdray1 lol

  • @SpaceReel i agree id rather have a nice shelter than sleeping in a camel id rather have fruits berries and rabbit than salamander guts :)

  • Monsters can spawn during night!

  • Rays the man. Would rather be stuck on a desert island with him then Bear Grylls

  • I wonder how flammable those spruce leaves are.

  • I want to do this. I mean I'd probably be found 3 days later, dehydrated, semi naked and mumbling to myself but still I want to do this!

  • @Hellsconsort And i'll be the one to find you.. *Rapeface*

  • @Hellsconsort I agree, that would be fun tho the dehydrated semi nakedness wouldnt be but before all that it would be fun lol

  • @Hellsconsort Hahaha

  • @Hellsconsort ahahahahahahahah

  • Ya that shelter is easy to build...assuming of course you walk around the woods with a full sized axe lol.

  • 0:38 minecraft dirt sound

  • @TensionAirsoft so it is

  • Ray Mears' videos are well done and educational. I don't see any sensationalism in them, just good, usable knowledge. Knowledge that might save your carcass one day, IF you can remember it.

  • This is a very good tutorial to build a shelter. I would like to try it out. But, is it allowed to cut so many trees down? Isn't it bad for the nature? =S

  • @SammyMelody The trees were dead standing or too small and weak to make it to the forest canopy, In the long run that actually makes the forest stronger :) I understand you're concern, Never cut down live trees as much as you can!

  • Haha, guy cuts down half of the forest, builds a clumsy "laavu"and calls it survival...

  • I wish there were more forest like that here in Finland, in the forest here is too much rocks etc..

  • Next up on Man Vs. Wild: BEar shows you how to eat your own foot and grow it back by smearing the stump with lizard blood.

  • minecraft! :D

  • nice vid

  • Thats the sickest survival thing ever p.s IF only I had a Labtop If i Was Trapped in the woods :D

  • i would use moss for a comfoter and pillo

  • not great advice this made me strike 3 matches till i had only 1 left :(

  • @fightinandirish Learn how to do it correctly

  • never wipe with poison ivy.

  • The more you know the less you need. Great bush shelter Ray. I have posted this video on my site. For more survival skills ideas check out ruleof3survival com

  • If you want to learn watch Ray. If you want to see someone risk breaking their neck for your own entertainment watch Bear.

  • And the most important of all : don't go building survival shelter without some PROPER DRUM'N'BASS banging in the background

  • I can't get the embed option to work on this one. Too bad, Ray Mears' videos rock!

  • what happens when the wind blows your way and you choke to death in your sleep from all the smoke?

  • yano what makes me laugh, when im gonna guess all you americans say Bear Grylls isnt tough? lol! He is ex special forces, served our country in the SAS, he knows pretty much everything there is to know about survival. and as for tough? there he served a successful career with the toughest soldiers we have... and lets face it we have better soldiers, america just have better technology.

  • @gamelyn33 Many of us recognize Bear's qualifications; he is indeed one tough hombre. But his show is silly, contrived, and will get most people killed if they try to emulate his antics. As for British soldiers, I grew to respect their professionalism when I was in the military. But a quick glance at history reveals the truth. Aside from kicking ass on the British twice, we also bailed them out in two world wars. Keep dreaming.

  • @dunfamalb my friend, you did not bail us out of the wourld war! infact u relized that u were a bunch of pussys cuz u were the only super power(of the time) not to help the west. and u never kicked our ass :/

  • @liamnut1 Believe what you want. History speaks for itself. Not only that, but you need to learn how to spell, which indicates we've learned to use your own language better than you. But keep trolling, if it makes you feel better.

  • @dunfamalb what wars? like was wars did u beat us in ? im curious cuz i dont no

  • Bear Grylls is way more awesome. He doesnt need an axe to make a shelter, 'nuf said.

  • Ray Mears is a real survival exspert, Bear Grylls is fake.

  • @frankehlers your right bear grylls just wants mony and fame

  • @MrRedlakeballer What's mony?

  • bear grylls isnt that tough lol

  • it would suck if the rain came from the other side =/

  • You ain't Bear Grylls baby!

  • @kiwishuffler at least he doesnt drink his own urine

  • I understand the idea behind a shelter that reflects a fire's heat. There are quite a few video on YT that show this. My question is, what is your contingency in case of rain. I realize if you build it right, the wind will be at your back, as well the rain/snow/whatever. But, often times the wind will shift, in which case you can find yourself getting wet. How do you prevent that. Can anyone tell me?

  • @dunfamalb well build the shelter that it sits over your bed, that way you still get protection from a good angle. if it is at an angle where it still gets into your shelter, then you've got yourself a very tricky situation. most cases this wont be a problem though. firstly, the warm fire will very quickly evaporate any water, and secondly the surrounding trees shold negate most angled rain anyway.

  • @Katazka Makes sense. I think, as you say, in most cases it wouldn't be an issue. But here in the American southwest, where rain is infrequent, it can get quite unpredictable. Even in Colorado, where I've done some camping, freak storms can occur with wind shifts and violent gusts. I was thinking if the individual had some kind of space blanket (not the flimsy kind, but the more rugged heat sheets version) he could use that as an additional cover.

  • @dunfamalb very much a valid point, but of course Ray here is explaining a lush-temparate woodland rather than a humid-lush typical of the Southwest. And he is also explaining how to work with basic tools. Most people would carry a sleeping bag or something similair, but of course there is in all likely-hood you could lose it. This is a flexible but fundamental tool to use for long-term survival.

  • why am i watching adverts from an institution that forces me to pay for already?

  • I love how a video of Ray Mears building a shelter becomes a flame war about Bear Grylls being a fake or not. Personally, I like them both. I watch Ray when I want to learn a lot of bushcraft and I watch Bear when I want mindless fun. Come on, he's entertaining - and there are some things to learn from Bear's show too, you just need to be able to separate it from the dangerous stuff he does for action.

  • So according to this - if you break a match it is no good... You must trow it away.

And I used to just - well use it.

  • Good video, nicely done.

  • Because everyone has a nice weighty ax in their daysack :S

He should be doing all of the chopping with a survival or tactical knife that a soldier or backpacker would have on their person, or even with a sub-3 inch locking edc folder that some people generally have on them

  • Mot useful videos ever. Kids who want to run away from home should watch this series :P

  • Bear 4 lyf x x

  • @bkippy Bear Grylls is a super dick head...FACT!!! He is an absolute idiot!!!

  • @crissybee2 Explain. And after you explain why he is an "idiot", describe the things that you have done, that makes you better, and gives you the right to cut him down. Asshole.

  • @SUP3RZ0MB1E - Ok then, every single episode I have seen him in, he seems to fuck up. He does not teach anybody any survival techniques he's just a "dickhead in the woods". He attempts to catch some animals to eat, fails and then tries to convince the watching audience that eating Bear shit is just as nutritious!!! Ray mears on the otherhand will set several traps and eat like a king!! POINT MADE!!! Come back if you can you Prick!!

  • @crissybee2 Ive seen several episodes of him catching food. And Im not talking about trapping a squirrel. Did you not see where his snare caught a reindeer? Or when he found a wild boar on a snare? Id LOVE to see anyone else have the balls to tackle a boar, caught, or not. So far, I havent seen you say anything that gives YOU the right to say shit. Bear summited Everest when he was 23, was in the SAS, and was the youngest chief scout sinse Baden-Powel. What have you done?

  • @SUP3RZ0MB1E He was not in the SAS!! I watched an episode where he was in the Scottish Highlands and he climbed into a dead deer!! Why the fuck would you climb into a dead deer for shelter, surely a "survival expert" can muster a better shelter than a dead animal. When you have time to take your cock out of his arse take a moment and think about loving a man who eats bear shit!! It has passed through the digestive tract of an animal and has no nutritional value whatsoever!!

  • @crissybee2 Prove that he wasnt in the SAS. He defiantly was. Any "survivalist" with half a brain knows that the deer's skin/fur will keep your warmer than nothing. Its not about what the "best" option is, retard. Its about what to do, if its your ONLY option. Try knowing what the show is about before you open your mouth. Animals digest differently than humans. Many animals (rabbits, bears, etc) pass food much faster than humans, and most re-eat their poop to get all the nutrition.

  • @crissybee2 Bear Grylls is ex SAS which qualifies him as one of the best soldiers on the planet.

His advice is brilliant: here I can see Ray with an ax that no soldier or backpacker would have on their person at any time (unless they took the option to put an ax head in their daysack to later improvise a handle). Bear Grylls uses a survival knife as every soldier and backpacker would be using one

  • @fenderJRtelecaster He was not in the SAS you retards, he was in the TA. Ray Mears trained the SAS throughout the 80's and 90's!! That is a fact. Ray mears educates people on survival skills Bear Grylls runs around the forrest eaten rotting fish and shit from the ground I could fucking do that. I do give respect to his cameraman however as he follows the prick everywhere and still manages to keep the camera in focus!!!

  • @crissybee2 Where is your proof that he WASNT in the SAS? Id be very interested in reading this.

  • @crissybee2

Yes Bear Grylls was in the Territorial Armies' Special Forces (21 Reserve SAS). Bear Grylls and Ray Mears are incomparable, though both have proven time and again they can survive in the wild. Your allegations against Grylls are ignorant idiocy when they aren't lies. Grow up.

  • Also, with this guy's shelter, if it rains you get soaked because it is very open and the wind can blow the rain drops in very easy. Real life is not like on TV. If you have common sense it's easy though. The way he lights the match is not great either. If it's windy, flame gets off. You should strike it very close to the fire wood so it covers the flame from the wind.

  • It would take half a day to build a shelter like that. You'd be very tired after you finish. You can build a much simpler one even without an axe. There's plenty of wood in the forrest that is already cut or broken. You can make a smaller shelter and that will also help with the heating. This one requires a pretty big fire to keep warm ecause it is mostly open. Compared to what this guy recommends (which is crap in real life), I used to do better shelters in 2 hours when I was a kid.

  • Alright so there is controversy on if he is real or fake. let it be known that he might now know everything about it and might often be told some stuff but he is a good teacher and that is the main point.!>??

  • @888zachary Same with almost any other survival show. Some of them KNOW their stuff, and have a background in the field...whereas really almost any bone head off the street could be told how to do something, and go on TV. It really comes down to, who is entertaining, and can teach well. Ive honestly never seen this guy before, but I would defiantly watch the show if I got it.

  • HI GUY, NICE.... BUT IF YOU ARE IN FOREST WITHOUT ANYTHING, YOU HAVE TO KNOW REALY SKILLS HOW TO SURVIVE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOOK FOR FOLLOWING..

    w.youtube.com/watch?v=iEIQTqWD9QU

  • eat a candy bar ;]

  • whats with the porno music when the fire what lit?:P

  • the last time an englishman learns me surviving in the woods

  • Does anyone know what the Jungle / Drum & Bass tune is??

  • be a bitch if the wind was blowing into the shelter :L

  • cool

  • Les stroud is the king of proper survival, ray is the king of survival knowledge, and bear is an expert of evasion

  • @DjUndying1 Sorry, Les Stroud took a course on survival, and became a "survivalist". I could take some "course" and literally know more than him. Ive spent my life in the outdoors, and this guy played music, until he went on a canoe trip, and decided he was suddenly an "outdoors man".

  • ray, you such compared to bare grylls

  • It's raining sideways!!!

  • it dont need to be that steep dumb ass

  • @ukdrift123

Sounds like you're the dumbass. Or at least inexperienced. In the environment he's in (where i happen to live btw) you can get rain so heavy you'd think someone was pouring the pacific ocean on you thru a sieve. Also - you can get snow and freezing rain damn near any time of year.

The steeper the roof, the better it sheds water and the less weight it has on it if it snows. You MIGHT get away with less - but like the man said, if you're going to do it, do it right.

  • And if the rain comes in the opening... well, ur screwed then!!

  • Ray Mears is my hero

  • 20 people will die cold and wet when the time comes.

  • and the other side of the shelter?

  • its a lean-to

  • ray mears wasted 2 good matches

  • Would love to know exactly where he did this in the Rockies. Most park areas wouldn't let anyone do this. Mind you we have plenty of Crown land. Will definitely give this a try.

  • This documentary is for extreme survival. If it was so extreme, i don't think that people would have access to an axe.

  • Mears always has tools because he's always prepared. If there's a chance you'll get stuck somewhere a smart person prepares for that eventuality

  • But where do you fine the tools to cut these trees off? If we'ra talking bout survival, mr Mears has always got a lot of tools.

  • @MissAstuteness Mears always has tools because he's always prepared. If there's a chance you'll get stuck somewhere a smart person prepares for that eventuality

  • @thebeattie I doubt that let's say if a plane crushes and you stay alive you'll have the tools. I mean I am sure you're smart but the situations can be very different, and usually when you have to survive it happens so sudden that you do not expect.

  • @MissAstuteness This is from his episode on The Rocky Mountains where he hikes into them. You are right a plane crash would be different but this clip is from a trip he did.

  • Nice

  • I like Ray...and I like Bear...which one is better? There's only one way to find out!!! (Only brits will get this one...)

    Anyway..

Does anyone remember the Bush Tukker Man? He was in Oz and he was great!!!

  • @ianthemaggot Good one xD I do

  • @ianthemaggot................FIGHT.........Yes I remember the Bush Tucker Man! An australian Army guy.....Les Hiddins was His name.............What A legend

  • @ianthemaggot FIGHT!

  • Why can't you people just like Ray Mears AND Bear Grylls? They're both great.

  • @TheAncientMariner66 correct.

  • how did ray get his training?

  • 昔、子供の頃に、おなじような隠れ家を作って火を焚いていたら、葺いていた杉の枝葉に燃え移り、もうすこしで山火事を起こしそうになった。嫌な思い出だな。笑

  • I like ray cus he's more pedagogic than other people on survival shows..

  • porn music when the fire lights

  • no way .... Ray is a pro

    Bear is completly fake

  • i think its amazing that shelter is still there! shown on his itv series

  • Bear Grylls is a fake what? A film crew filmed him demonstrating how to survive. Nothing fake about that.

  • @adying

But if your lighter is wet it may not work

That is why a fero rod is also good to have on hand

  • i use a lighter ..it doesnt break

  • I bet its Americans comparing Ray to Bear. They seem to have to argue over everything as if the two cant exist in their own right. Ray Mears has been on TV in the UK for over a decade and his programmes arent about drama or action. They are interesting educational type shows. Not everything has to be adrenaline fuelled high octane action, action, action.

  • @plaidzinc Take it easy!! Americans NEED action! They are too simple for anything else. Have you seen the crap they show on TV? Jersey Shore, anyone? Ive tried to reason, or use logic with the Americans...its impossible.

  • @SUP3RZ0MB1E Please tell us where you're from so we can call everyone in that country idiots as well.

  • could you built the cot you built in this video but put it in a debris shelter like the others you have made?

  • I don't know this man, but this is how my father taught me how to build a shelter here in the Norther parts of Canada. Except you should never start a fire near to it, except if there are at least two people and you can take turns watching it.

BTW, fir bush (if used properly) is extremely warm and provides great insulation.

Don't waste firewood in Canadian wilderness, it's extremely rare. Keep it for cooking or if you know you'll freeze to death and have no other way to warm up.

  • camping with him would be so fun!

  • He made a shelter to protect against rain and fire to keep himself warm, but if it rains there will be no fire anymore and he will be cold and if the wind blows the rain against the entrance of his shelter he will be wet anyways. Personal opinion i don't think he made that shelter right.

  • those matches that he broke could still work if u had to use them

  • fuck reality, im sticking to minecraft.

  • I love the technique of how the top of the fuel wood is also used as kindling.. that's a great idea that I never knew

  • What knots does he use to start and finish the lashing with spruce roots?

  • Dont you think there's some deadly insect out there?

  • Dont you think there's some deadly insect out there?

  • 3:21 isn't that hot

  • damn how many tress did he kill?

  • @BertisWorldYT treehugger

  • @REEPER391 LOL man

Bear is not fake at all,and he never said he will put his life in danger to show you fools how to survive,he just gives tips and show you how to do things..That doesn't mean he has to actually risk his life for that! Some people are really too dumb..to understand anything..oh and btw :go see what wikipedia says about Bear..than you'll probably understand what's all about!!!

  • How long would it take to make a shelter like that? In all courses and videos I've seen they had just the lean-to only like 4 feet high and branches shoved under, no bed like his, so I was just wondering how long it would take to build

  • probably not a very effective shelter if the wind picked up...

  • Ray Mears; "This type of shelter requires three key factors; One is a good cutting axe. Two, an abundance of fire wood.

And three, some lite drum n' bass for a proper banging night on the shrooms - FOREST MASSIF!"

  • @ChainsawGutsFuck drum n bass 4 life :)

  • @ChainsawGutsFuck :)

  • nice shelter man 5* s and vid. :D \m/

  • Yep, those broken matches are absolutely useless now!

  • i don't know man...

  • Bear Grylls drinks his own piss. not sure about that ? bear piss or mear piss. if its mearly piss or bearley piss, is it worth pissing about with ?

  • let me get this straight I'm in a survival situation, and good god I've found an axe!

  • pfff... Bear Grylls is the only true survival man

  • @plastkaka bear Gylls is a fake. its desent tv, but look him up...its all fake.

  • @pkbjorn35 omg fake? no, hes not actually in the middle of fucking nowhere nad completely lost, he SHOW u what to do if ur in that situation. dumbass... anyways, Bear doesnt use matches or axes... just his knife and flint, thats it

  • @plastkaka As i said, its desent tv, and he shows many good things. But his stunts are crazy and would kill you if done wrong. And the chance of it going wrong is far greater that going well. Thats why hes fake. The primary is to make tv show, survival c
