@Okebaram She didn't just study music at some university, as you put it. I've been quite well acquainted with her through a mutual friend for a very long time. She was, in fact, classically trained before she began to sing CCM. It was required in her music program in college...even as it was in the one in which I was trained. You take classical voice first to strengthen your diaphragm, lungs, & vocal chords...for a year or two. THEN you go on to the commercial/contemporary technical training.
@mkortiz317 I've read some she studied music at a university, but that does not mean she was classically trained as far as singing opera goes and I hear people assume she was all the time.
@mkortiz317 Good to know...one of the most beautiful natural voices of all time. I hate conservative christian contemporary music, but I love the sound of her instrument. What I wouldn't give to hear her as the Contessa in Le Nozze or the title role of Tosca. With her sound, I imagine with work she may have been able to sing the role of Norma.
I can tell that the little debate about chest or head resonance let me pretty indifferent ... i am deeply emotionned by her voice, her way to sing, and that's all what matters to me ... for the other things, I just don't care !!
Of course there is chest resonance; check your pedagogy. There is no such thing as a curved jest voice; you're inventing terms. You're also contradicting your argument when you admit she goes into a "falsetto/mixed tone." Again, I remind you that I've worked with Sandi and heard her talk about her transition from chest resonance to head resonance.
Sandi Patty can belt out better, I think. I think what you heard was just that the sound pitch isn't clear in the system (on computer). Her voice has nothing to do with that system glitch. SHE IS THE BEST!!
Though she still did an amazing number, it still saddens me to see that her voice has changed so much. God bless you Sandi. Yours is still the most beautiful voice ever heard. God deserves the best.
No. She is still using her chest voice virtually always. Her voice just sounds like more like it's fasetto. It always did to some extent and her voice placement has shifted more into that falsetto nasal mysterious tone as she has grown older. Now if you don't believe it, I can't proive it to you, but it is her chest voice.
Just want to add that them high Cs and C#s (and higher) she's always belting are in chest too, she got raaannngggeeee forever, but people might not realize this. However, nowadays, it seems she doesn't go that high, but instead uses an alternate ending for her high songs.
No, all the high notes are sung in her legitimate head voice. She's classically trained. She shifts out of her chest and into her head voice anywhere between middle-G (on the staff) and middle-B. Full head voice starts around E above the staff. Head voice is not falsetto, though.
Yes, they are sung in chest voice. Sandi has a unique voice... well she's not alone. My comment was a response to someone else, so youtube if I wasn't you respsonding to you and you disagree with this comment, there's no point bothering me about it. I understand what I said might be hard for you to believe, or even impossible till u get to heaven, so whatever you think it is is fine.
BTW, even though people assume Sandi was classically trained, and she's classically influenced, she was not actually classically trained. She however did study voice in college and she was raised up singing in church.
Let me clarify this statement about her training, I assume the term "classicaly trained" is used to refer to students who go through a school, class or training that specializes in classical music alone. Usually that's what a "classically trained" singer is.
Okebaram, I know what a classically trained singer is because I am one myself. You're wrong about her use of chest/head voice. If you read Ralph Appelman or William Vennard's research (two leading 20th century vocal pedagogues), you'd understand it's physically impossible for the human voice to sustain chest resonance above the 2nd passaggio I've worked with her in the studio and heard her talk about it. The proof is in the audible shift in her voice. You can hear the switch into head resonance.
con'd... Sandi's chest voice does undergo a shift to a falsetto like tone, and she's not the only soprano whose curved chest voice cracks into a mysterious nasal falsetto/mixed-like tone (look up Crystal Rucker for a more noticeable & more uniform example). It is a result of their voice placements. Sandi's tone shifts dramatically after E5, especially now that she's older, but the subconscious still hears the chest voice qualities that make people stand and clap.
@baritonebynight even without being classically trained, I'm sure she could do an amazing Queen of the Night. I've heard her do opera pieces and I know I'm not just biased when I say she blows good opera singers out of the water even in that genre
@okebaram What empirical evidence can you provide that she could sing the Queen of the Night's aria when 1. She has never performed a top F in public. 2. Her high notes are always approached by step, never by leap which is MUCH harder to do. 3. Her Star Spangled banner is now transposed down a minor third when she sings it in public, and she no longer performs the high Cs/C#s. I would also like to know what operatic repertoire she has recorded so you can provide empirical evidence.
What is the title of this Song? Anyone?

@Tommyseger7 The title is "Alleluia." It's recorded on her album "Take Hold of Christ"

cornellcrawford, she don't use chest voice. She uses her head voice and she dont switch. she just know how to register and control her voice range

A technically-worthwhile comment. Let's now enjoy the emotive side of the music.

Where do you she her voice has change I have listen to her since she started with Bill Gaither, she the same probably even better as she goes
JimmyP5659 4 years ago
I'm referring to her chest voice. She used to be able to belt out high notes in chest, now she had to use her soprano head voice to hit those notes.
gemininer 4 years ago
Vocals are probably tired from usage of the normal touring schedule. So, you can't be so picky. :)
