  • A fantastic slice of American country music history. Thanks for posting.

  • If you have any family/ancestors from the Appalachian mountain areas, you can understand this style of music and the gravely voices etc. what a great piece of Americana!

  • Love this, she reminds me of Margaret OBrian here. What a treat!

  • the 50's is gold era of country. the best vocalists, the best guitarists and steel guitarists, best guitars, the best sound

  • When she does the gravel voice, doesn't it seem like a minstrel show? I like it, but I'm just not used to it.

  • How much does Carl Smith look like Johnny Cash? Oh my goodness.

  • she was 27 or 28, she was just married to him.

  • RIP Carl

  • RIP Carl, thanks for all the wonderful music.

  • AMAZING...

  • Carl and june were married, they produced Carlene Carter

  • i would luv to see more of june like on 3:21 lol!! she's good. that what i totally do when iam being goofy. i just had a good laugh.

  • I saw Carl and Carline on Raph Emery's show. Carl was absolute class! He seemed like the most likable person I have ever seen.

  • June Carter Cash was born in Virginia, in 1929. Her sisters were Helen and Anita Carter. Her mother was Mother Maybelle Carter, her father was Eck Carter, his brother was A.P. Sara was Maybelle's sister-in-law. Carter and Smith married and divorced. A daughter came out of the marriage. Carlene Carter. Carter She married Rip Nix, and then divorced after meeting Johnny Cash. Cash divorced his wife Vivian in 1968. The same year, Cash broke his pill addiction, and married Carter, and had a son (JCC)

  • DONOTTAWAGUITAR

  • Maybe Carl and his 2nd wife Goldie should have had been saluted as well. They successfully built a 48 year marriage that produced three kids. Sounds like Carl may not have had the fame of ole Johnny but I am NOT sure he would trade what he has with ole Johnny. Sadly Carl lost his Goldie in 2005. Carl is still alive - residing on his family farm outside of Nashville.

  • i think its funny, i love the" nutty-ness"

reminds me of lucille ball or fran dresher even. funny yet feminine/

u know not all overly sexy "happy birthday mr.president" ,lol

  • @iloveclassics50 oh my gosh, thats exactly what I was thinking!! She reminded me of a country-ized version of Lucille Ball=D haha. June is totally adorable:)

  • I said that because someone asked how Carl got into the Hall before June, as if he was not as deserving.

When Johnny Cash was earning his fame, Carl already had . His induction was long overdue.

  • I always wondered what her 1st husband looked like.

  • This is no act. She really was nutty, even after she married Johnny Cash. She was actually embarrassing to watch when she was doing her comedy routine, or even just talking on a talk show, or whatever. Sorry to those that really like her. I have nothing against her personally, whatsoever, but I just couldn't watch her, except just whenever she was singing.

  • What are you saying? You must be a moron, or a non-soberly person to talk to June that way! Just think how she feels in heaven (May 12th, 2003) now. I love her jokes, and I totally disagree with you. You shouldn't BE on this June Carter vid, and GET on 'He don't love me anymore', and 'No swallerin' place'. You'll get it.

  • @Jem1146us and I guess you just new her personally right no where have I read about June being nutty everyone who new her had nothing but good things to say about her.

  • Did she always play that southern girl character on that show?

  • june definately sang better than she spoke. lol. sounds like a crazy person. ROFL.

  • I love June:]

  • How can u not smile at this wonderful clip!!

    Thanks for the views!~

  • Just awesome! Thanks so much for posting this!!!

  • Mugwump: Originally an Algonquin indian term meaning a war leader. It later came to mean a person who is independent (as in politics) or who remains undecided or neutral.

But I like June's definition, too!

  • Back in the 80's my oldest son who was in grade school had a sweatshirt with a comical drawing of a mugwump-and the explanation June gives of it.

This clip was a great find You can't watch it without a smile on your face.

  • THANKS

  • WOW I did not know about this thing about June. I'm loving it.

  • It don't get any better than that!

  • That's right...2 before Johnny ! I absolutely LOVE this ! She was cute as a bug in a rug and he was very handsome .

  • 3:22... also adorable.

  • 1:50. Adorable.

  • Carl and june were married until he met Goldie Hill, June had three marriages under her belt until she met Johnie. i guess she was a serial bride. Carl was as popular as Hank Williams in the 1950's the golden age of country.

  • wrong she only had 2 until she married cash

  • She was funny(: He reminds me of pee wee herman! She is so cute!

  • what a strong voice!

  • Shiny rabbit noses... Very Risk'e type joke.

    Listen... Funny yes, for grownups...

  • Her dance just kills ME! LOL. I miss her so much!

  • Love her!

June will always be a beautiful person who is real country!!

    A real talent too!!!

    George Vreeland Hill

  • man oh man what a woman!!

  • She's so cute.. lol "I wasn't done!"

  • Aww! I used to love this song!

  • What a talent!!!

  • i know exactly why johnny loved that cute little naughty country girl, she was just lovely if i would have met her at that time i wouldnt even be able to think about anything else

  • I love this song (and June's music)....just not Carl.

    Thanks for posting!

  • Boy that's going back a few years. Thank ginmillsinger "Bill" for sharing. Mark

  • A great video! 5*****

    Thank you Bill(ginmillsinger)for sending.

  • how old was she then?(:

  • probably mid 20s

  • Had to be over thirty...she married Carl in 1952 according to Wiki. There is no way that this color broadcast was recorded before that year, either. The woman was quite youthful!

  • These broadcasts took place from '53-'56; she was born in '29 so she'd be mid-20s

  • dont belive everything you read on wiki

  • These were shot on color film in '53-'56 before the advent of video tape. June was most definitely in her mid-twenties

  • @yeehawbrix3 im not sure it was the mid 20s cuz we didnt even have televison then

  • i believe this is the early 50s like 53-55ish

  • @oldstylelife Spent ages looking this up...You're right, this and 'Time's A Wastin' were a single in 1954.

  • This is great! I love them together!

  • She was beautiful and he sang wonderfully. Rest In Peace June!

  • I would love to see more of these! Classic! Funny!

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!!!

  • Love that dance routine - She was Soooooo Carming - I Love her Grawl - America in her inicent time

  • What a great clip! OLD KNOT HEAD, Halrious!

  • wow i would love to be in her shoes. Mine has holes in them LOL!

  • This is an awesome clip! I had know idea that June Carter (later to be Cash) had that "natural" talent. The performance was pure, natural and the chemistry between Carter and the talented Carl Smith is explosive. I want more!!

  • These shows are from the Gannaway Shows that were filmed with many of the GOO stars in about 1954 and 1955. I have the full set of tapes, and in some of them June, Carl and Goldie Hill all appear. In one, June and Goldie Hill even square dance! They were all stars of the day and the way the story turned out, it is very interesting to see them all together on stage doing these shows.

  • When was this filmed...?

  • probably '53 or '54

  • Thanks! :)

  • She's just like a little cupcake.

    Soooo cute!

  • They were so funny.I love this clip.

  • what is love carl?

well june its uh aching heart and burning desire.

put em together and whats he got? heart burn.

lol great voice and sassy personality and

  • HILARIOUS!!!!

  • that was a great little video! love it!

  • where exactly was this filmed? In carter's fold?

  • No Carter Fold was about twenty years away when this was filmed. These tapes are an extension of the Grand Ole Opry, so my guess is that it was filmed at the Ryman.

  • this is awsome!

  • Wonderful clip! I don't think anyone today realizes what a charming comedian she was....utterly charming!

  • You're right. It's a pity that to English ears her speech is incomprehensible.

  • Well to my english ears her speech is just great, i love it and wish i lived where there are folk like her and who talk like that :-)

  • Her voice reminds me of the wives in the Laurel and Hardy films

  • Does anyone know what broke up their marriage? They both are cute.

  • two words "johny cash'

  • two words "johny cash"

  • no GOLDIE!!!

  • sorry im not an expert in country but ido like this type of country music because its completly live withought effects or any of the crap that they use in studiose today

  • l grew up in that time, and the rumor was he thought he was to good for her then he met Goldie Hill

  • Thanks. I was growing up then too and I thought I had heard it was Goldie Hill and Carl. Dont think Johnny Cash had anything to dowith it. Not that he wouldnt have, lol.

  • What a "Sweet-Heart" What a talent

    Love that Raspy voice.

    Great little dance.

She was so cute and very funing

You see you don't have to go to the dirty side to be funny.

Thanks for the Post It's Great.

    Her partner was great also.

  • June reminds of me of Judy Garland here. She is so funny to bad she didn't make any movies. She is such a delight. Well I can hear the Grand Ole opry in Heaven. Maybe she is sining with Garland over the rainbow

  • She was in a very nice movie called The Apostle with Robert Duvall in '97. She was quite a bit older but it is very nice to see her . . . and I know she did a handful of made of TV movies

  • She is so pretty. Did you see Johnny Cash on Seaseme Street with Oscar the Grouch when he sings Nasty Dan. My son enjoyed that and they thought it was very funny

  • TY jeanthree! I've been trying to figure out who she reminded me of. Yes, she does sound like Judy Garland with a southern accent.

  • June must have been quite an outsider at the time, to get married thrice

  • June is truly amazing. Carl is just as great.

  • They seem so good together...split up after 4 yrs..he was wed to Goldie Hill for 48 yrs, and June to Johnny Cash for 35 yrs. I guess love is better the second (June's 3rd!) time around.

  • I'll never forget this guy touring down round Dallas in the late 60's ... gave up the game to soon. Great voice , great talent. My opinion...

  • OKAY ,,,, HOW DID CARL SMITH GET INTO THE COUNTRY HALL OF FAME BEFORE JUNE CARTER? I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND.....<sigh> OH WELL,,,I'll give it up now and hope the establishment comes to their senses in due time. Thanks for the video!

  • How did Johnny Cash get into the Country Music Hall of Fame before either Carl Smith or June Carter? June was a top star and Carl was a superstar before Johnny Cash ever cut his first record. It's Nashville CMA politics.

  • so what dude johnnys in a class of his own man come on

  • June is gorgeous & hilarious!

  • this is a great piece of footage!

  • Well, you know what, I appreciate how she looked when she was young as well as when older and the same with Cash. What can you expect! They were so talented all throughout their life. Loved them.

  • LoL it's funny how she says all that nonsense and keeps a straight face. Carl Smith was a handsome man. Aww.

  • Carl Smith was June's first husband and father of her (I believe two) girls.

  • Hey was her first husband, but he was only the father of her oldest daughter, Carlene.

  • that was actually at the barn dance befor the ryman

  • I do believe this guy is my mom's uncle. His sister,my grandma's name was Minnie Smith. She married harrison Combs, and he died in sept 1962.She use to live in Acup Ky. If anyone knows this guy,can you get in touch with me,Thank you,Jan...

  • Check out the music of Carlene Carter! June Carter and Carl Smith were her mom and dad.

  • She is so cute, and def. she looks better when shes older

  • i love this song!

  • I think she's better looking then than when she was on the ABC Show with Johnny Cash in 1967. That's just my opinion.

  • wow, what year is that? it's a historical video!

  • I'm not entirely certain. I would guess at '53-'54.

  • I think June is playing a country version of Gracie.

  • Yep!

  • Jeah, great show.

    Thanx for uploading.

  • Actually he was kinda cute!

  • EEEEWW lol

  • ps. he does look like a goofy johnny cash! i like carls laugh its great, listen out for it

  • haha june is so funny

  • He looks a little like a goofy Johnny Cash (minus the charisma) and she is hilarious--most definately got prettier as she got older. Great, thanks!
