For education? It lacks a proper keyboard. You cannot type nearly as quickly without one. You need a keyboard to perform educational tasks (beyond dicking about on the internet....)
Yes! Education! iPad will be the safest way to navigate the web for kids. The internet is full of crap (and I don't mean just porn). Spyware, malware, badly made apps, ect. With the tablet you will be able to see web content without worry that is going to make you crash or give you a virus. The apps can be custom made to teach anything in an engaging, interactive way, Teachers can create "keynotes". Textbooks and periodicals will be much more fun in this than in any other device.
We should stop focusing on what it doesn't do, and focus on what it DOES, and how much it costs for what it offers.

True, but if you already have an iPod or iPhone, everything you have already will work on the iPad, plus there are many FREE apps, podcasts, etc you can download and start enjoying content without spending a dime beyond the $499 (and whatever tax your state requires). Or you can surf the web via Wi-fi, also for free.
The so called 'apple's unique features' are nothing. They just make things look kind of cool, but they don't really work the way many people want them to. Many people don't want to flip a tablet, spin pictures or make your fingers dance on a screen. This is not necessarily practical as apple try to imply. Many people just want things to work, and fast, without the infinite number of demands apple impose for you to finally make things work.
Ipad's a winner, going to be big. Next will be the use of thin film like materials. Who wants to lug a heavy laptop around when it's not necessary? This is the main reason this will be a big seller.

i just saw it on tv on cnbc and they said it basically a big ipod and yes you can use e books stream live tv shows and you can also use the same apps from a iphone and it will hold 10 hours of charge and it will come in 2 version a 16g and a 64g you can also change the background
I think all of Apple's products were the result of filling a demand. MP3 became the new music format, iPod filled the demand for a portable device to play them. The market wanted a more user-friendly and bug-resistant computer, they made the Mac. The market wanted more functionality in a phone, voila, iPhone. Nobody puts that kind of money into a shot in the dark.
i want one device where the screen stretches from pocket size to 52 inches from a phone to a tv!! OR a head lamp projector that makes what ever is in front of me my computer screen from a pice of paper to the person in front of me in line!!

I can't wait for the apple tablet. I struggled with the decision to buy either an iMac or a Macbook back in October. After seeing them in store, I decided on the 21.5" iMac, with the plan on buying the new tablet next year. Especially if the prices which are being talked about turn out to be true.
I am in the same boat. I have an iMac that I want to use primarily for work and then have the tablet for media/internet/basic functions, just to free up my iMac. I don't really need an entire laptop, so the tablet is a really exciting prospect.
well from a technology stand point: its a great break thru, i mean if it run full SL oses, people bring laptop to starbucks is just surf net or whatsoever. Tablet is going to be a laptop killer for casual mac user.
and because of that, from a marketing stand point: its a fucking chaos, cause it's going to replace ipod touch, iphone, macbook air, macbook.
but who knows, apple always willing to risk it for better break thru.
I don't know about it replacing all of these. The iphone is a phone, the macbook is a laptop, the tablet will be tablet. Your not gonna make a phone call on this thing just as you're not going to write a long report on it either. The other devices will still be better for their specialist uses. The tablet may substitute them occassionally but I very much doubt it will full-time.
That's not to say I don't see where you're coming from...
Tablets are never going to be better e-book readers than e-ink. Its just a glare thing. I didn't hear one thing that would want me to own this apple tablet.
the 'secret Microsoft tablet' looks so good and to me says that Microsoft is catching up with apple. but they are missing the itunes store equivalent, if apple brought out this device it should be bigger more like a 13" screen, have the ebook capabilities then for it to be compatible with Pages (it would need a touch keypad). students would love this to write essays as it would make things like referencing so much easier plus it would work with your library and lecturer idea really well!
Also, there are already colour e-ink, with bigger screens and copy+paste function etc, and like you said, battery life is very important, which is again, impossible with LCD screens, with videos etc
If your main point is that the Apple tablet would make a good eBook, then no, there's no need for a Tablet, but tablets by any company would be so much more than an eBook, it might include eBook function, but if an eBook is important to you, then a dedicated eBook is the way to go.
ahhh oh cool, i will check that out ! i think i believe that this tablet could be good for ebooks because of the way apple will do it, but TECHNOLOGY is a factor, and the technology in ebook reades allows for a better reading experience, but steve jobs hates ONE DEVICE FOR ONE THING, he is famous for announcing a device that does many things, you can already buy magazine on the iphone. but yes i do plan on getting an ebook reader, but also i like the tablet as it can do MORE...
The need for an eBook should be no deterrent upon getting a tablet, technology may evolve to a point when we can have a one for all device, but that still seems to be some way away.
At the end of the day, everyone have different needs, but if eBook is important and you're likely to use it hours on end, then a tablet won't be the answer.

The section on eBook is the biggest pile of what's it I've ever heard... I'm sure you are a be a self acclaimed fanboy anyway, but still.
It's literally impossible for anyone to integrate decent eBook function into a tablet device, I don't know about OLED screens but as of now 9.6" OLED screens isn't economically viable. It's important the eBooks use e-ink, that's the technology that make reading so pleasant, I own an eBook and I can't imagine reading on an LCD for anywhere near as long.

in terms of e-ink etc. ye i do agree with you to an extent, but how long do we have to wait to get a e-readers to show colours, proper pictures etc. textbooks like medical textbooks would be a nightmare atm on e-readers, but yes the feel of reading on a e-reader with the e-ink is quite pleasant.
I also sometimes find this whole issue of tablets concerning. Think about it for one sec. Those who will buy these tablets are likely going to be those who own Apple machines. Students are more likely to own Macbooks. So, will a student carry the tablet or the macbook to university? The chances of him/her carrying both are slim. Which 'machine' needs to be prioritised. AND, if he/she owns an iPod Touch/iPhone - thats another critical factor. Its going to be hard.
Deffo a good video - I can see the education being a hit if launched. You youch on some nice ideas and i hope its true. I hope they use snow leopard cause if they use a new one... I think its going to get too intense for apple keeping uptodate with three different OS's (iphone, mac and tablet)

I can see why you are excited about the educational functions the tablet can have. If you could actually get your textbooks it would be great cause you won't have to carry loads of books around all the time, it will save money and of course it will save trees :)

What if the Apple Tablet had a hybrid screen with a LCD and eInk for text documents to save battery life when you're just reading Text Books and have color when you're watching porn?
One of the reasons though, that I wanted Apple to create a netbook was that there cheapest computer is $600 without a monitor, I was looking for a cheaper alternative, because all I want a Mac for is to develop apps for the iPhone, nothing ultra powerful. I do want an up-to-date OS though.

I think that the keyboard has a bit of a flaw. Maybe it's just me, but I like to hold my fingers on the keys and then apply pressure for the individual letter. Well, running an emulation of Snow Leopard on a tablet would really defeat the tablet. I see it that the tablet will have to be very much an economy device to accommodate. Starting with the processor, it must be low power; the screen must be OLED; and the drive must be SSD. I see either the iPhone OS as is, or a beefed up version of that OS. When this device hits the market, it will have a premium price tag. It will be out of reach for almost everyone, at the start.
nope, i VERY MUCH DOUBT apple EVER USING atom, they dont have a reason to, i mean APPLE OWN THERE OWN CHIP MANUFACTURER " PA SEMI" that could makes custom chips for the tablet, and in terms of graphics they could use the PowerVR series chips, ATOM is way too weak, but we shall see what the new atom pine trail processors are like, but the nvdia ion is nice ! but a lot of nvdia hardware causes are lot of issues !
The Pa semi are power pc based processors though right? If you think the tablet will run snow leopard.. surely they wouldn't use power pc based processors as the have taken away that code from snow leopard.
I can see the operating system being similar to the iphones version of osX. Afterall whats the point in apple developing this operating system if they really only use it on one product (I say one because the touch and iphone... pretty much the same). It may have a few more

The Apple Tablet OS I really think they will use the Apple iPhone OS if the apps are scaleable. Does anybody know if they are scaleable? Apple Tablet for education would be amazing if they did textbooks. However I don't think there will be 3G support only wifi, but I believe if you have an iPhone maybe they can find a way to tether them together without extra cost plus if you do that you will sell two devices. Also I think there will be only one model with two different storage specs.

We, or I talk about rumours because its great to talk about POSSIBLE GREAT devices !

no need to pray, apple own a chip manufacturer "PA SEMI", so they could use that company to make there own processors or contract samsung to supply them with arm processors. NO WAY APPLE WILL CHOOSE atom, atm atom processors are a joke. TBH im waiting for the new atom processors, the PINE TRAIL series. in terms of graphics, apple could go nvdia and choose the TEGRA, but i doubt it, they will still use the PowerVR series of chips

i use my iphone as a PHONE, so to have all three is fine, i have my primary mac as the main work station, the tablet as a ebook reader and a good media device and my iphone as a PHONE.
im thinking you may have changed my mind regarding the tablet. not so much as a media device, i have my ipod touch and my macbook pro, but definitely from an educational standpoint. i start uni in a week or so and if i could get the law books i need as ebooks, and read and annotate them on this device, it would certainly be attractive. especially if apple could build in natural gestures like flicking to turn the page and so on.

@MegaDoofdoof uh.. there is already a variety of tablet PCs, iPad is just one of many targeted to a niche market.
This "film like materials" you speak of is already being considered by corporations like Sony.
Search "flexible OLED" screens. You will see a variety of "film like" displays concepts for laptops, watches, phones, televisions, etc.
IPad is just a toy till the real game changers come rolling in. Nothing ground breaking here.

Good Presentation (move the camera up a bit next time (so your centred). I have to agree with you on the market approach by apple. The end result is whether you need it or not, you'll want it. I think this year will be very exciting re: the ipad as without a doubt apple will be at the top of the price bracket with this, and ... everyone else is already on board, so i'm glad apple came out so early to allow others to set a price that tempts us away from the quality and name of apple !!! I hope.

i just saw it on tv on cnbc and they said it basically a big ipod and yes you can use e books stream live tv shows and you can also use the same apps from a iphone and it will hold 10 hours of charge and it will come in 2 version a 16g and a 64g you can also change the background

I think all of Apple's products were the result of filling a demand. MP3 became the new music format, iPod filled the demand for a portable device to play them. The market wanted a more user-friendly and bug-resistant computer, they made the Mac. The market wanted more functionality in a phone, voila, iPhone. Nobody puts that kind of money into a shot in the dark.

I can't wait for the apple tablet. I struggled with the decision to buy either an iMac or a Macbook back in October. After seeing them in store, I decided on the 21.5" iMac, with the plan on buying the new tablet next year. Especially if the prices which are being talked about turn out to be true.

I am in the same boat. I have an iMac that I want to use primarily for work and then have the tablet for media/internet/basic functions, just to free up my iMac. I don't really need an entire laptop, so the tablet is a really exciting prospect.

well from a technology stand point: its a great break thru, i mean if it run full SL oses, people bring laptop to starbucks is just surf net or whatsoever. Tablet is going to be a laptop killer for casual mac user.
and because of that, from a marketing stand point: its a fucking chaos, cause it's going to replace ipod touch, iphone, macbook air, macbook.
but who knows, apple always willing to risk it for better break thru.

I don't know about it replacing all of these. The iphone is a phone, the macbook is a laptop, the tablet will be tablet. Your not gonna make a phone call on this thing just as you're not going to write a long report on it either. The other devices will still be better for their specialist uses. The tablet may substitute them occassionally but I very much doubt it will full-time.
That's not to say I don't see where you're coming from...

the 'secret Microsoft tablet' looks so good and to me says that Microsoft is catching up with apple. but they are missing the itunes store equivalent, if apple brought out this device it should be bigger more like a 13" screen, have the ebook capabilities then for it to be compatible with Pages (it would need a touch keypad). students would love this to write essays as it would make things like referencing so much easier plus it would work with your library and lecturer idea really well!

Also, there are already colour e-ink, with bigger screens and copy+paste function etc, and like you said, battery life is very important, which is again, impossible with LCD screens, with videos etc
If your main point is that the Apple tablet would make a good eBook, then no, there's no need for a Tablet, but tablets by any company would be so much more than an eBook, it might include eBook function, but if an eBook is important to you, then a dedicated eBook is the way to go.

The need for an eBook should be no deterrent upon getting a tablet, technology may evolve to a point when we can have a one for all device, but that still seems to be some way away.
At the end of the day, everyone have different needs, but if eBook is important and you're likely to use it hours on end, then a tablet won't be the answer.

The section on eBook is the biggest pile of what's it I've ever heard... I'm sure you are a be a self acclaimed fanboy anyway, but still.
It's literally impossible for anyone to integrate decent eBook function into a tablet device, I don't know about OLED screens but as of now 9.6" OLED screens isn't economically viable. It's important the eBooks use e-ink, that's the technology that make reading so pleasant, I own an eBook and I can't imagine reading on an LCD for anywhere near as long.

in terms of e-ink etc. ye i do agree with you to an extent, but how long do we have to wait to get a e-readers to show colours, proper pictures etc. textbooks like medical textbooks would be a nightmare atm on e-readers, but yes the feel of reading on a e-reader with the e-ink is quite pleasant.

I also sometimes find this whole issue of tablets concerning. Think about it for one sec. Those who will buy these tablets are likely going to be those who own Apple machines. Students are more likely to own Macbooks. So, will a student carry the tablet or the macbook to university? The chances of him/her carrying both are slim. Which 'machine' needs to be prioritised. AND, if he/she owns an iPod Touch/iPhone - thats another critical factor. Its going to be hard.

One of the reasons though, that I wanted Apple to create a netbook was that there cheapest computer is $600 without a monitor, I was looking for a cheaper alternative, because all I want a Mac for is to develop apps for the iPhone, nothing ultra powerful. I do want an up-to-date OS though.

I think that the keyboard has a bit of a flaw. Maybe it's just me, but I like to hold my fingers on the keys and then apply pressure for the individual letter. If anyone else is like me, there would be an uncontrollable amount of typo-ing. Microsoft *gasp* actually looks like it's making something better (this is not spam, it's just illustrating my point!):

Well, running an emulation of Snow Leopard on a tablet would really defeat the tablet. I see it that the tablet will have to be very much an economy device to accommodate. Starting with the processor, it must be low power; the screen must be OLED; and the drive must be SSD. I see either the iPhone OS as is, or a beefed up version of that OS. When this device hits the market, it will have a premium price tag. It will be out of reach for almost everyone, at the start.

I believe that any tablet device from apple will use the intel atom +ion platform as it's that small at the moment.

nope, i VERY MUCH DOUBT apple EVER USING atom, they dont have a reason to, i mean APPLE OWN THERE OWN CHIP MANUFACTURER " PA SEMI" that could makes custom chips for the tablet, and in terms of graphics they could use the PowerVR series chips, ATOM is way too weak, but we shall see what the new atom pine trail processors are like, but the nvdia ion is nice ! but a lot of nvdia hardware causes are lot of issues !

The Apple Tablet OS I really think they will use the Apple iPhone OS if the apps are scaleable. Does anybody know if they are scaleable? Apple Tablet for education would be amazing if they did textbooks. However I don't think there will be 3G support only wifi, but I believe if you have an iPhone maybe they can find a way to tether them together without extra cost plus if you do that you will sell two devices. Also I think there will be only one model with two different storage specs.

the leak pictures of the ipod touch with a camera are REAL, apple decided to change there minds on the ipod touch, for various reason that i have mentioned in previous videos. rumours are important, because APPLE WATCH THEM, every company watches rumours because they can see the reaction from people on certain topics and ideas, yes it may not be used directly in making products, but its still important. I kind of liked the Vaio UX.
= Don't forget that it was first released several years ago.
It was quite revolutionary and powerful device in its time.
The screen will definitely be bigger.
But if they drop the physical keyboard, it won't make things easy for the user to handle many applications in a full Snow leopard environment.

ye i shouldnt say it was a joke, i meant that TO COMPARE IT to an apple device its a bit of a joke, BUT yes even i remember WANTING one of those UX for years.lol. i mean looked pretty crazy all those years ago...i tell you whats great, the OQO, that was made by ex apple employees...to bad the company I THINK has gone bankrupt a few months ago...yes i think the tablet with no keyboard that has snow leopard could have prbs...UNLESS you can connect a bluetooth keyboard to it !

One last thing:
There is one important issue that you didn't talk about too much = the Hardware.
I PREY that apple doesn't integrate one of those Intel Atom processor with an Intel graphic solution in it.
= If it's painfully slow and that it can't even read 720p videos, this tablet won't be worth buying.

no need to pray, apple own a chip manufacturer "PA SEMI", so they could use that company to make there own processors or contract samsung to supply them with arm processors. NO WAY APPLE WILL CHOOSE atom, atm atom processors are a joke. TBH im waiting for the new atom processors, the PINE TRAIL series. in terms of graphics, apple could go nvdia and choose the TEGRA, but i doubt it, they will still use the PowerVR series of chips

I don't see who would buy their primary computer, an iphone/ipod touch, AND this tablet. Seems like a waste of money to me.

yes but there are people who would buy all three.lol. i think for me id have my primary computer, then the tablet thats it..but i dont want to make that promise now.lol. i wouldnt mind having all three, but i also dont mind having my macbook, tablet and some cheap phone, ONLY if the tablet ran the iphone apps as well.

i use my iphone as a PHONE, so to have all three is fine, i have my primary mac as the main work station, the tablet as a ebook reader and a good media device and my iphone as a PHONE.

yes and no. BUT if the tablet uses a version of snow leopard then the tablet wont be a striped down ipod touch

will the tablet have an iphone OS or Mac OSX? If it has an iphone OS I wouldnt use it. id rather have a 13'' macbook and an iphone

im thinking you may have changed my mind regarding the tablet. not so much as a media device, i have my ipod touch and my macbook pro, but definitely from an educational standpoint. i start uni in a week or so and if i could get the law books i need as ebooks, and read and annotate them on this device, it would certainly be attractive. especially if apple could build in natural gestures like flicking to turn the page and so on.
can you get your pharmaceutical textbooks as ebooks already?

They'll get more desktop developers for the tablet and because of that, it'll get more people on to buying iMacs over Windows PC's.
