this match just makes me sick. fu**ing Kevin Nash & Scott Hall. if Nash won this match fair & square, I would hand it to him. but it makes me sick how he won it. ~smh~ Goldberg was 174-0 if this match was with DQ (disqualification)
It was advertised the Goldberg would face Nash and Starrcade in flyers handed out BEFORE the World War 3 Battlle Royal started! And the Battle Royal is to determine the #1 Contender. So it was a waste to even have the thing.
@NWA1985WCCW I am all in favor of letting Elizabeth (when she was alive) get on top of me (preferably naked) and pin me and I am sure any WCW wrestler would feel the same way. How ever, that would not be the best wrestling decision (best porn decision, but not wrestling). Goldturd flopped as champion and was not drawing because the streak was stale and Goldturd neither could talk nor wrestle, so it was time for him to lose. Nash was the only top guy available to beat Goldturd, so he did it.
this night was the begginning of the end for wcw. the only logical person they coulda gave the belt to was either sting or the giant. i hated the fact that goldberg vs the giant was such a squash as well.
this night was the begginning of the end for wcw. the only logical person they coulda gave the belt to was either sting or the giant. i hated the fact that goldberg vs the giant was such a squash as well.
WCW had a horrible tendency to give Starrcade excellent build-up (Crow Sting vs. the leader of the hated nWo, Goldberg's undefeated streak vs. the leader of the mega-popular Wolfpac) but they always ended it with some shitty screwjob that made people want to watch WWF instead. And then came Russo and that was the nail in the coffin.
If Starrcade '97 and '98 had proper endings, WCW would be the #1 promotion today, and we'd be watching "The Rise and Fall of the WWF" DVD's.
WCW went down because of bad management. All the people on the inside admit this. If this was when WCW began to go downhill it certainly wasn't evident in the reaction of the crowd when Goldberg was pinned. The problem with WCW was that it was too dependent on the NWO. The moment the NWO began to crack, so did the WCW. WCW broke Vince McMahon's hegemony. When WCW went down, a lot of people didn't bother watching wrestling anymore, and a lot of people did.
This was the night WCW was at its peak, the night after on Nitro was the beginning of the end. Wolfpack were huge, Goldberg was huge and they messed it up with a finger poke. This PPV was decent with some top matches, however there were some lame matches. Would Vince McMahon have had guys like Norman Smiley and Jerry Flynn competing at Wrestlemania?
It's funny seeing how things change over the years... all those years back, when I started watching WCW and growing up with it... I thought it'd be the best stuff in the world...
Being grown up now... well... it doesn't look that shiny anymore to put it in those words... But man... I remember watching Starrcade back then... and I was so hot at the nWo for screwing Goldberg... It makes me smile now... Chaotic, weird WCW... XD
WCW was going down hill long before Starrcade 1998 with most saying Starrcade 1997 was the beginning of the end though WCW had its problems even before that. I heard Nash's shoot interview explanation for beating Goldturd and Nash was really right, but he messed up by putting himself over Goldturd and then the dumb Finger Poke Of Doom, which was the real end of WCW. The streak should have been done with a good worker who could talk instead of Goldturd who was a dud with out the streak.
PeoplesWar, "our downfall" implies you worked in WCW (is that you Kevin Sullivan or Terry Taylor). NWO Wolf Pack was around when WCW / NWO was hot in 1997 and was not a major factor in WCW doing well or doing poorly. I agree the NWO went on way too long and should have been closed by 1998, but WCW never had any ideas besides NWO to take its place. NWO got too big and too boring with just being the same thing over and over until everybody was sick of it (NWO copies like LWO were even worse).
@MRobert21 The problem with Goldberg was that he was pushed too soon. Instead of letting the guy develop and improve, WCW just gave him a monster push and he became difficult to work with. It didn't help that he had no personality or charisma either, unlike Austin or Rock.
@Bash316 The problems with Goldturd were that he could not talk at all and he could not wrestle at all (he did lack personality too). Goldturd's ego problems came from when he started because he thought he was a big time real athlete from his 2 weeks with the Falcons and he was handed a big contract with out paying any dues or being trained properly. I bash WCW a lot, but how they pushed Goldturd was perfect except that his weaknesses meant that he could not last long once on top of the card.
@MRobert21 I agree with you that WCW's handling of Goldberg was good, despite his deficiencies in the ring. But WCW should have forced him to improve his craft and because Goldberg refused to do it, he became an egomaniac and even had the gall to call himself a "veteran". If you want living proof, watch his "epic match" with the Rock at Backlash 2003 where he got booed out of the building.
@Bash316 There is no way to force a guy to become a good wrestler. Some guys like Goldturd just stink in the ring. WCW actually had Goldturd in the ring for a few months as a regular wrestler before he got the super push and he was not getting any better. If WCW kept Goldturd hanging around and stinking in the ring any longer than that, then they would never have been able to make fans forget that and rebrand him with the streak to get at least a little investment return out of his loser ass.
lol thats a ridiculous statement ! ur sayin one of the best title matches ever is goldberg v nash ? lol .... goldberg squashed his opponents, had 4/5 moves n nash had 3/4 moves, not in the same league as HBK,bret hart, angle,aj styles etc...
mayn what are you talkin bout the best promoted match look back at starrcade 97 m8 that is what you call promotjon, hogan vs sting !!!! that match was anticipation for a year absolutely unbelievable. too bad for the ending but what a great way to introduce bret hart, its just sad they made no use of a great wrestler
this could have been one of the best promoted matches with a great match to go along with it, and then they had to end it the way they did. I realize foir the storyline it made sense since the NWo reformed but it coulda been sooooo much better
Are you serious? Nash vs Goldberg one of the best matches in history? Behind GOLDBER VS HOGAN?!?!?! What are you drinking because I need to get some of that.
well truth is the ending to this match changed many times before it was in stone. nash at one point in a early draft of the story line was to be kicked out of the nwo and goldberg to be in the nwo. nash was suppose to get screwed. goldberg didnt like the idea. woudl have been interesting if it ended up that way though

Way to spit in the face of the people who were stupid enough to buy Starrcade two years in a row, WCW.
You just had to follow up the "fast count" BS in the Hogan vs Sting Match with the taser BS in the next Starrcade.
WCW deserved its fate.

@2hard21 lol I can't believe people think this is a bad finish. Goldberg's streak went on long enough, and this was a good way to end it.
