well, i know that mandolins usually have steal strings, and sometimes they're nylon, but the significant difference is the body size. lutes are bigger and have nylon strings. the mandolin did evolve from the lute though. i hope this helped u to differentiate them.
Mandolins are played in fifths with the same tuning as a violin. Lutes are tuned in the same way as a guitar, in fourths, possibly with a third somewhere in there. I think lutes aren't always fretted, either.
the theorbo has 14 single srings (usually) tuning G_ A_ B_C D E F G Ad g b e a attention the 2 first strings are lowered an octave, it means that the 3rd. is the highest string there are more types of theorbos you can search at the lute society of america.
