  • levon helm's an OG

  • for those with a memory of this concert, you can't forget the band coming out to jam with the dead

  • I was there too. There were giants in them days.

  • I agree that there are some decent bands out there today if you look around for them, but nothing like what was out there from 65-75. Everything now is about MONEY. Listen to The Basement Tapes and you will see what it sounds like when guys are playing purely for the love of music. Also....how many bands can you name with 4 guys that each play 3 or more instruments on the same album? The Band is unique in that sense...they switch around to find the arrangement that produces the best result.

  • @iangcunningham I'm sure Grizzly Bear has quite a few multi instrumentalists.

Older bands were certainly more technically gifted, people had lesser variety of recrational activities - no internet, no youtube :)

So they rehearsed and played in their free time.

But that doesn't mean, musicians, artists nowadays are any less passionate about what they do.

  • fucking great bass intro

  • 4:33 is a pic from them being on SNL

  • WOW!!!!! DANKO and his harmony is second to none......

  • Richard Manuel was God's gift....I miss u Richard...

  • Sounds like an Albert King song.

  • @sharpie871 ...and how about danko on that harmony?! love it

  • Roosevelt Stadium was THEE coolest place in the EAST.

    Like an old coliseum.

  • LOVE that riff that Garth throws in starting about 4:10. Amazing all around. Levon is the man.

  • LOVE that little riff that Garth throws in there starting about 4:10

  • I got it on a bootleg via the internet, its basically called what it says in the description

  • where did you get this recording?

  • Thank God for Levon.

  • @adamtzsch thank God for theBand: Richard, Levon, Rick, Garth, and Robbie.

  • @adamtzsch AMEN

  • Holy buckets this is a great song. Didn't you LOVE the way Levon would turn his head to the side to sing? Idk why it blew me away that the drummer would sing - whoo hoo thanks for posting this

  • I was at this concert. Grateful Dead also on bill. The Band kicked ass! I still remember what an INCREDIBLE show!

  • @bucks1955mjm oh man you don't know how badly i wish i'd been born earlier to see these bands, all my favourite bands (the band, talking heads, pixies) are gone, well pixies are still here but far from their prime

  • @taojjbtcrf108 The band, talking heads, pixies... are all bands who were NOT mainstream in their time but gained critical recognition.

Similarly there are bands out there nowadays who are not mainstream but making wonderful music. You just have to know where to look. In 20 years time, kids will say I wish I was born in the 2000s to enjoy grizzly bear.

  • @psirou

You know had to know where to look back then.....in motherfuckin' football stadiums. The might not have been ABBA big but c'mon!

  • @leeharveyosmosis Yeah, admittedly but it was different times too.

The Band would not get on mainstream media nowadays - just look at the likes of Wilco.

It just grates me that on every other classic rock video some 15 year old starts ranting about how they were born in the wrong era and stuff when there's really some excellent artists out there nowadays, they just have to look a little bit harder.

  • @psirou You nailed it, psirou.... totally nailed it. There are sooo many incredible bands out there today who don't fit into the "pop" mold and therefore will never be heard by the masses. Oh, well, their loss as far as I'm concerned. I'd even take it a step further, though, and recommend people take a closer look at the LOCAL talent wherever they happen to live. The most often played tracks on my ipod are from bands from within 50 miles of my front door.

  • @dancingspike I agree to an extent, but local talent, ummm no. Apples and oranges depending on where you live.

  • @bucks1955mjm I missed this show. However, I did see CSNY the night Richard Nixon resigned.

  • @bucks1955mjm you rock old top!!!! god bless the fatman and garth for giving the gift of music not only to members of their respective projects but to the whole universe as well!!!! never saw the band but have at least 70 some odd dead shows under the belt..SPAC 1984 1st Shoreline1995

  • @bucks1955mjm i was only one year old at that time...lol...i love the band so much...very real musician's playin great music...thumbs up a....

  • This is very awesome. Thanks!

  • This kicks major ass
