@DOMERAISER No problem. Townes Van Zandt his response is great indeed, what a wonderful artist. Even though throughout his life he has had many problems he always stayed a pure musician and his true self and you have to admire him for that. An unsung American hero.
@Firefox123455 Yes, Willie is great on this song, but I never denigrate someone singing their own song. It's Townes' song, and how he sang it is great. And I'm sure Willie and Bob and Merle and Steve would all agree with me.
is it just me or does Bob look like townes did in about the same time frame? I think this took place in the early 90's and it is uncanny how much they looked alike at least to my memory. I do not know how to find a picture of townes that I could date.

anyone have a take on what this song is saying? I love this tune. i think it is about the human story, maybe. i think that because of the line about the Federales letting him slip away "out of kindness, I suppose." it goes, "they could have had him any day." maybe townes was writing about himself, marvelling at the fact that God had allowed him to live so long with such a self-destructive bent.
@derek4ur Townes said it just came to him - a story about a bandit who was hanged "they let him hang around" and the man who betrayed him. There was an actual legendary bandit called Pancho Villa with a friend whose nickname could be translated to Lefty, but Townes says that he wrote the song without quite realizing the history. That said, its a disservice to take the lyrics literally - its more than just a story and you can take other meanings from it.
@derek4ur - A songwriter does himself a disservice when he spells out the meaning of a song. I have looked at this song from many different angles because it is open to different interpretations. That is why this is such a great song.
I think the song is about betrayal. Pancho ends up dead in Mexico, Lefty returns to O-hi-o, and where he got the bread to go, they're ain't nobody knows... Lefty sold his partner out and is left to live with the consequences.
@tacojon100 Perhaps you could fart better notes, but no one would listen. Not Dylan's best moment, but not his worst either. Like Townes, his performances have warts.
This performance is simply perfect, pure class.

This beautiful song written by Townes Van Zandt has been recorded by many.
Steve Earle said, Townes is the best songwriter ever; and I'll stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table and say this. (not an exact quote)
I have loved Bob Dylan's music for nearly 50 years; I have even obscure albums.
But I have not enjoyed Bob in 3 live performances over the past 20 years.
