wonderful performance. i don't know how the original goes because i'm just getting into cowell, but it's a great composition using great techniques developed by a great musical pioneer and played by a great pianist!
Great video! A few bum notes. (Of course I must compare with Cowell's original recording!) If you get a chance to make another video of this (perhaps with two cameras, one pointed inside the piano), and a little extra practice, it would be amazing.
Isn't it fun to play on the strings?!?! Ever since I started I always wanted to but was told not to but now I'm playing Crumb's Makrokosmos and it's awesome! Great performance btw. I think if I played this piece though I'd get tired of strumming.
It was so fun! Slightly nerve-wracking at the time though.. obvious where it goes wrong! Hope to do it again someday... thanks for the lovely comment, good luck with your performance!
It is, I got it from the library at my Music college, I can't remember what edition it was though. Although I think there is only one. it was in a book with a group of his pieces for piano.
I enjoyed this very much! Is there a score for this? How is the notation written?!?!? I realize it's a piece from Cowell, did he come up w/ a way to notate this?
It was written before his imprisonment. the latter pieces (written after that) aren't "exploratory" as this one, and are often "religious" and "folkish", like the Hymn and Fuguing tunes
Henry Cowell was yet FAG boy.

Sounds more like an autoharp than an aeolian harp.

I know this piece, some things went a little bit wrong so to hear. But this piece itself is rather clumsy to play.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
that was the stupidest thing i've ever seen. your just strumming across piano strings

Wow it sound very nice! But my teacher say it is not good to touch piano string because they get rust faster from finger oils.

Thank you! Yeah, definately get permission before you do this. An alternative is using like a plastic card or something like that.

Would a guitar pick be a good choice as well?
madderbass 3 years ago
possibly, I don't know. I just know the piano technician from my conservatoire said plastic cards (credit card style) is what he'd recommend.

@ChoiChrisLi That is true but it's ok. Think about it, would you want to listen to this song or get rust on your piano strings?

@szszrocks I would always like to listen to this song. It is so beautifulness -^-^-

Cowell made a new form of notation for "prepared" piano pieces like this.

As a builder of aeolian harps, I have a special appreciation for this piece.

sweet i just learned about cowell in western music and this piece!

elegantly played

I think that the reserve meant to emulate the timbre of an actual Greek Harp, of course taking liberties whenever the piece would benefit from it.
GolumTR 4 years ago
This actually sounds a little reserved for Cowell, is this one of his later pieces after his imprisonment?
beethovenboy 4 years ago
If Cowell lived from 1897-1965 and this was written in 1923, It's a long time before he died... i think it's an earlier piece!
