I watched everyone of these..it saddens me so and pisses me off the way the mothers?fathers push their children so damn hard to model,do beauty pageants, and to act
Don't they see more harm comes than good...let children be children period!
Wow, so, so very sad. I remember how I loved the Wizard of Oz as a kid. This is so sad to hear. I hate drugs!!!! I hope Whitney Houston wakes up and stays off of drugs :-(
@IrishFriendsFan I am beyond sad. All the faith I had and was hoping for. I feel so sorry for her family, especially her daughter and mother. She was on such a true road to recovery.
omg, thats so scary and sad of what she went through. its so sad that she never got a chance to be happy, healthy, and have a normal life. :( RIP judy,u were and always will be 1 of the greatest stars in the world
I do not like this little documentary. It left out far too much and I didn't like the slant of it at all. It was far too slap-dash. They didn't even talk about how Busby Berkeley was the one that caused her to collapse. Berkley was a cunt who should never have been allowed near children, or anyone with feelings. They kept trying to blame Judy for everything right up til the end. If you want to watch something good about Judy watch Me and My Shadows. The movie that was based on Lorna Luft's book.
But I only say this to be scientific and not to be a personal critic, I don't at all feel she was a bad person because she took pills. I take pills for similar reasons she did, as do many of us today. Only the medications today are great and helpful and non-toxic. I wonder what her life would have been like had she been given Prozac and some Valium rather than Dexedrine and Seconal. Probably a lot better. Too bad they weren't available. Bless Her.
That OD in 1964 really taxed her system, it damaged her heart, and her already damaged liver probably failed, causing a rather small overdose like the one in 1969 to become fatal. 900mg of secobarbital is A LOT dont get me wrong, but she and many others were accustomed to large doses in 1960s. I know of people years ago taking 1500 to 2000mg of barbiturates and living through the day long stupor. I believe it was her damaged body ultimately, as she took high doses in the past when healthier.
I'll give it to anyone that says "ask any kid on the street who Judy Garland is, and the they won't know" that that us true. But if u ask any kid over the age of 4 who Dorothy is they know exactly who she is! Maybe Judy dosnt live on as a real person but as a legend that no one can touch. That's not the point her characters and songs will love on in history!
Her mother, MGM and LB Meyer should hang their heads in shame for what they put this girl through in the early years. It was nothing more than child abuse, and whether it was common-place amongst child stars of the day OR NOT, has no bearing. Have MGM ever issued an official apology for what they did? It is documented that the doctors employed by the big studios practiced this sort of treatment widely and with impunity, way outside of the law as it stands nowadays. RIP little floral Gumm.
Judy never stood a chance. .. And you she was able to shine so brightly and move millions of people with her enormously sincere and generous talent. She gave it all to us. Thank you, Judy! .. R.I.P.
Had her mother been a real mother maybe Judy would not have died or lived the way she did! It must hurt so bad to have your own mother not love you! and be jealous of you!
If one can imagine being so loved and admired for some time then tossed aside for the next talent, it's no wonder one would try to numb feelings of rejection. Not saying it's okay to numb oneself, but the pain from losing your place probably comes from pride, ego, low self esteem. wow
The studios killed her, Mr. Myer killed her, the ambition of her mother killed her too, she was a great talent, but is a shame see a wonderful singer finish that way, she was 47, but she looks like a 65 year old woman.....and nobody did anything.....
Unfortunately Linday Lohan is the next Judy Garland. Both beautiful, talented, horrible families/backgrounds, started out in show business as little girls, became drug addicts because of family and show business, have gotten into alot of trouble, and looked much better they way they did before. Let's just hope Lindsay doesn't suffer the same fait as Judy and dies. I still love Lindsay I remember that beautiful talented redhead. Let's pray she finds the right path.
This is mainly ficticious,a lot of "opions" and conjectures, some of the so called facts are lies,Judy wasa great talent who had a chemical addiction. There was no treatment then for chemical addictions then.Whah is Margaret O'Brian doing in this, she made 1 movie with Judy!
It wasn't her fault. She had the addictive gene and they fed her pills starting at age 14. What did they expect? I still love Judy. She'll forever be a classic.
For those people who feel Judy did NOT commit suicide, it doesn't really matter. Her lifestyle WAS a slow suicide from the beginning. Aided, I understand, by many in Hollywood who needed her to "perform" up to their standards. Her daughters are not saying anything OUT OF RESPECT for her, but I guarantee you they do have stories they could tell. Addiction is ugly--you cannot pretty it up. Out of respect they are honoring her, which I think is wonderful. She didn't stand a chance, period.
If you notice alot of the commentators say 'i think this' 'i think that'. They are telling what they think happened, not true facts. This is coming from people who have written books on Judy, they can't tell real facts just what they think, it's all crap what they say. All this documentary is false, Liza & Lorna never mention any of this in their interviews, they never mention Lorna helping her mother. I'm willing to believe her daughters who were actually there rather then some writers
very fucking sad story - if you look at her eyes when she was young compared to when she was 47 her eyes were heart fucking broken from this disgusting whorehouse of a world
I can't stand these British Fucks. She was forced to take drugs and then it became an addiction. She would buy things she did not need. How do you know she did not need them?No one was with her when she died. She died alone and lonely. No family holding her hand no one really loving her.She was facing death alone it is not fair so shut your mouths and let her rest in peace.
she wasted her life. She threw her talent away. She drank herslef to death to the point she had lost her mind. sad story. everyone used her and disappointed her but she wanted tooooo much people couldnt give it to her..
"Dead from an overdose of barbiturates." The coroner's report says otherwise. I can buy that she may have had those two previous suicide attempts, but she died from poisoning cased by the pills she had taken over time. And while I believe she may have had bouts with addiction, I doubt she was addicted for all of those years straight, she would've been dead by 30 if that were the case.
You Know what you don't know all these people want a piece of her and drove her into debt.Mr.Luft was a gambler. She gave him her love and her took her money and spent it hit her shit we don't know so leave her rest in peace.Your voice Judy is forever. Love Barbara...
actaully she wasnt found on the bathroom floor at all.she was found my mickey slumped o the loo knickers round her ankles!!!gosh documentary NOT!!!!get your facts straight
Judy needed professional help--and it wasn't given to her. Makes you want to cry out loud at the gross unfairness of life. Even Marilyn had a therapist--though it did no good in that famous case. Where were Judy's 'friends'?? ALL that she did for others!--then abandoned by them and thrown in the trash can. I'll tell you though--Judy is immortal because her songs and movies will last forever. She sang from her heart. RIP, Judy, cuz you deserve peace--and are in heaven now. :)
If you look at her in early 50's and compare to early 40's she looks like a totally different person already IMO. Her face aged like 20 years in the early 50's. She looked like she was in her 50's when she was only in 30's and she looks damn near 70 when she died.
Not quite correct. She was still very beautiful in her thirties and young looking. As I have mentioned on a couple of occasions on this site, I spent a lovely hour with Judy in 1953 (she was then 31 yrs of age). A perfect and approachable young lady and was not then in the deteriorated state that we saw later. Although then a legend, she was quite humble and very young in her ways. I will agree with you that a decade later it was different. I will treasure my meeting with her.
if she had lived another few years she would have never had to worry about money again, because 3 yrs after her death liza won an oscar for cabaret and was selling out concert venues around the world. liza could have given her the life she deserved and no one could take liza's money like they did hers
I am not surprised that she did that to Mark Herron. She threw a butcher knife at her son Joey as he was running out of the brownstone they lived in in NYC. She was in a drug haze and didn't know what she was doing. Mark was only with her for 12 months max: 6 mos unmarried, 6 mos married.
@MariLanderos39 its because she had taken drugs all through her life!!! She looked good for someone who had taken drugs throughout there whole life!!!
@MariLanderos39 It was drugs since she was 8 years old I blame her jealous no talent mother...oh and I would have taken a butcher knife to Mark Herron's penis if I found out my man was sucking C@ck!!!
@martina55033 barbiturates were not really understood in the 1930s (remember cigarettes were positively advertised in the US until as late as the 1970s!). It's unfair to place blame on the mother for things even doctors did not know at the time.
when i think of her downfall it makes me think of my favorite music artist Peter Steele mainly cuz how just by pics u can see how the abuse and depression took a tole on their life "there are times i get extremely depressed and how i sublimate those feelings is through music." pete himself he died just this year april 14th and was an amazing singer the best in my oppinion Type o Negative rules
My mom died pretty much the same way. My mom was an alcoholic and she died at 60 but she looked like she was 80. In my opinon, the drugs nor booze was the problem. Fame was not the problem. No disrepect to Judy, but her additions got the best of her, or I should say her lack of control to say no to drugs and booze. We all have choices. My parents could have said no to booze, but they decided to not try hard enough for their family to get better. You have to think about others sometimes.
@yt9451 She didn't have a choice. If you understand what happened, they were fed to her by doctors as a teenager. There were no support systems for drug addiction like today - no real detox or rehab. Addiction wasn't understood in the 1940's. By then, she needed the pill just to function. Had she gone off of them in the 60's, she would have died; her body needed them just to function. Judy had choices in many things, but in all honesty, the studio hooked Judy and she never even knew it.
this shouldnt of happened to judy! she shouldnt have been make to preform so young for her mothers greedy need she should of done things her way and not they way everyone else wanted so she could have lived longer in life and been around to preform for al those who loved her
Wow, dead at 47 - No offense Judy, but you looked more like in your late sixties. Trying still to be a larger than life star, fragile and surrounded by chaotic people living questionable life styles that where ambivalent to her state of mind.
poor judy i just cant belive she took so much pills and i just couldnt belive that happend to her so Judy Garland please rest in peace we all miss you
Indeed this is only half the story- the people that really knew her said she was funny as hell and usually very upbeat. The drugs finally beat her, though. Very sad.
One thing that really bothered me about this documentary is that there is no mention of Carnegie Hall- the greatest performance in show biz history, when she was supposedly "past her prime" and there is not mention of it? Weird.
Herron's an imbecile. Miss Judy's problem wasn't dementia (disgusting that he betrayed her by saying she was). It was pills. He should have known this better than most. People used her to the max, and then tossed her aside when she desperately needed their help. It's such a shame she never found a REAL man to protect and help her. She went from loser to loser to loser. Thank God for her kids; they were the only true joy she knew in her life. They sustained her through her final years.
@mmdillon1 I wouldn't say Herron was an imbecile or even immoral; of all Judy's last three husbands who worked for her, only Herron didn't go into Judy tell-alls or merchandising. I wouldn't even say he misled her about being gay, because if you look at Judy's track record, she preferred marriages and "romances"- I use the term loosely- with gay men. Nobody put a gun to her head. You are correct, her choices of weak men, or at least men without means or careers, was a very big factor.
@cynthiacher I prefer the image of her sprawled on the floor instead. When legend becomes fact print the legend. Thanks for the clarification but how would you know?
@robolojo There are many biographies of Judy that confirm it. One by David Shipman described the scene like this: "When Deans (Mickey Deans, her last husband) went to find her, he found the bathroom door locked. He climbed through the bathroom window. She was sitting on the lavatory. Rigor mortis had already set in." Judy was 4 million dollars in debt when she died.
I mean seriously just replace the title with "Judy on Elm-Street" - they COULD have made the whole thing a LOT more sensitive and elegant, respectful towards anyone who truly loved her.. which was everyone here..
It would be nice if the actress in the overdose parts looked a little bit like Judy rather than a combination between Rizzo from Grease and a 1960s American high school receptionist.
Judy Garland was only 47 years old just before she died, but because of her wasting away physically and mentally, she looked like she was 70 years old!
What a poor girl. Judy's life was a very very tragic life. I wish she never got messed up with drugs and never had a horrible family life or bad relationships. She had issues that were ahead of her time. She never would have been treated like this as a child star today. Her family would have gotten help, she would have gotten help, and she would have been allowed a childhood. A real childhood. She would be 88 today. She would have been alive. She would have been loved, as she still is.
I don't like that they didn't show how sweet she was, sure she went bananas cause of all the drugs and such...but form other things I've read she was a sweet girl
Barbiturates were not scheduled substances in 1969. There were diet pills containing a mix of barbs and amphetamines then too. Earlier than that, SK&F manufactured and had their Benzedrine Inhalers sold over the counter. They were known as "Benzedrine Sticks". "Reds", "Yellow Jackets" and "Tuinal" was available among other meds you no longer see today. I've seen that look before in other people's eyes. The way they used their hands, the way they spoke. Barbiturates were a problem in the '60s.
It's kind of scary... Thinking of young judy garland being fed drugs to keep her working... THEN OF COURSE she would be demented... Drugs make you crazy... and no wonder she looked 70 when she was 45. The aging and craziness.. What did they expect to happen then?! She wouldn't stay golden forever if drugs was her daily routine for idk how Many years...
women back in Judy's day weren't referred to casually as "bitches". I know that's commonplace in rap vernacular and unfornutaley is becoming a household term. save it for those who are deserving of the epiteth. thanks for the reply.
It does my heart good to see through comments etc. that no matter what is said about Judy, or what Judy went through, people still have a high respect and admiration for her as both a person and entertainer =)
There is a big inaccuracy in this documentary. The narrator says that by 1969 she was no longer a star. What planet did they get that info from. Certainly not the planet of reality. Being ill does not make a Legend and huge talent suddenly not a star. And at her funeral there was over 22,000 people of all races and ages . The British press as Judy said herself at Carnegie Hall are rather odd.
No matter how horrible her life was, she was a lucky bitch for living 47 years. All those times where anyone else would of died, she made it. Crazy. It's depressing how her life turned out.
that stuff that ruth leon says about her wasting her money on furs and cars was a lie, judy had two managers/agents who stole all her money and thats why she got into debt, most of these comentators r bullshitters
Judy was super talented. It seems that people took from her and loved her gift but didn't see (or chose not to see) the hurting person with all the talent.
what kind of man laughs when he comes out of court and calling his wife demented. he didn't love her. it was payback by somebody. they put him up to it to drive her crazy. that's my opinion. glad fag is dead now.
of course she was demented. her only purpose in life from the word view, was to perform, to sing. what does one do when they're not singing. get caught up with bullshit. then someone with the bright idea says put her on this drug that drug. i'm sure she didn't have a normal routine. how can anyone face life let alone rottne scumbags in that state of mind. this was all elementary, that's why they're all crooks and murderers. and if you have people you have to trust lying to you, what then?
@up2space She was NOT demented. She was a sick woman. There is a difference. You can't cut all those albums, make all those movies, do all those concerts and be entirely out of it. Get with the program before throwing your psycho babble terms around! I 'd like to see you do 1/20th of what Ms. Garland do NOT on drugs. Not!
@windstorm1000 you missed the point. read my first comment. her scumbag phony husband called her demented, you use sick, the scumbags who were around her should follow in begelman's shoes after a very early comment i made to the sob when he was still alive.
Yes she looked like a worn and very old woman towards the end. Sadly this is what drug abuse and alcohol can do to a person. But combined with constant stress and little free time it took a total toll on her life. Death was actually her way out of the madness.
i'm having a judy garland weekend after watching the tv movie. it's very interesting to watch these programs on youtube and see directly contridicting accounts of judy's life. guess we'll never know what ACTUALLY happened...
Begelman and Fields screwed her, yes. But Sid and Judy lived pretty high on the hog for a lot of years before B and F became her managers. And did NOT file taxes for those years. Of course, Lorna's going to defend her father. It would be too painful to acknowledge a parent's co-dependent, enabling behavior might have contributed to your other parent's downfall. RIP Judy, and I hope your children understand their mother had a biologically based illness. I love and miss you.
Wow, that is such a tragic story. It's beautiful that gay people designed their rainbow flag for Judy. I didn't even know the woman but it always makes me cry when I hear about her end.
Oh, how precious! I didn't know that about the rainbow flag, thank you so much for sharing that tidbit of information. That is a beautiful declaration of love and support for her that she would have adored!
They don't mention that Judy found him in bed with their pool man. He was a sick user and knew what he was when he tried to hitch his star to her wagon. He knew yrs before her temper and humor so she didnt force him to marry her. Judy just wanted a man who loved her and protected her. Mark was NOT that man .
@Nomz05 I agree with you. I actually see more of a resemblance of Britney's life with the life of Marilyn Monroe. I'm sure there are some who would disagree with me but that is my opinion after research on Monroe, and several biographies. But I totally can see where you are coming from too.
@Nomz05 Britney Spears!? Are u kidding me!? Britney will NEVER be Judy! She can never convey the talent and reach out to her audience and wear emotion in her performances like Judy.
sad story!!! the hollywood system killed her!!! bastards!!!! poor girl!!! she sang one of the most beautyful song ever!!! over the rainbow!!! rest in peace judy!!!!!

@martina55033 barbiturates were not really understood in the 1930s (remember cigarettes were positively advertised in the US until as late as the 1970s!). It's unfair to place blame on the mother for things even doctors did not know at the time.

You have to think about others sometimes.
yt9451 1 year ago
@yt9451 She didn't have a choice. If you understand what happened, they were fed to her by doctors as a teenager. There were no support systems for drug addiction like today - no real detox or rehab. Addiction wasn't understood in the 1940's. By then, she needed the pill just to function. Had she gone off of them in the 60's, she would have died; her body needed them just to function. Judy had choices in many things, but in all honesty, the studio hooked Judy and she never even knew it.

Weird.

AMTProductionCo 1 year ago
Herron's an imbecile. Miss Judy's problem wasn't dementia (disgusting that he betrayed her by saying she was). It was pills. He should have known this better than most. People used her to the max, and then tossed her aside when she desperately needed their help. It's such a shame she never found a REAL man to protect and help her. She went from loser to loser to loser. Thank God for her kids; they were the only true joy she knew in her life. They sustained her through her final years.
mmdillon1 1 year ago
@mmdillon1 I wouldn't say Herron was an imbecile or even immoral; of all Judy's last three husbands who worked for her, only Herron didn't go into Judy tell-alls or merchandising. I wouldn't even say he misled her about being gay, because if you look at Judy's track record, she preferred marriages and "romances"- I use the term loosely- with gay men. Nobody put a gun to her head. You are correct, her choices of weak men, or at least men without means or careers, was a very big factor.
defundthewar 1 year ago
Actually, Judy was found dead seated on the toilet, slumped over with her head in her hands. She was not sprawled on the floor as depicted here.
cynthiacher 1 year ago
@cynthiacher I prefer the image of her sprawled on the floor instead. When legend becomes fact print the legend. Thanks for the clarification but how would you know?
robolojo 1 year ago
@robolojo There are many biographies of Judy that confirm it. One by David Shipman described the scene like this: "When Deans (Mickey Deans, her last husband) went to find her, he found the bathroom door locked. He climbed through the bathroom window. She was sitting on the lavatory. Rigor mortis had already set in." Judy was 4 million dollars in debt when she died.

Commentarian1 2 years ago
of course she was demented. her only purpose in life from the word view, was to perform, to sing. what does one do when they're not singing. get caught up with bullshit. then someone with the bright idea says put her on this drug that drug. i'm sure she didn't have a normal routine. how can anyone face life let alone rottne scumbags in that state of mind. this was all elementary, that's why they're all crooks and murderers. and if you have people you have to trust lying to you, what then?

up2space 6 months ago
Yes she looked like a worn and very old woman towards the end. Sadly this is what drug abuse and alcohol can do to a person. But combined with constant stress and little free time it took a total toll on her life. Death was actually her way out of the madness.
