On metres that are NOT "clamp" style, to check the amperage, first make sure the appliance is unplugged, then disconnect the black wire from the first termination point inside the switch box. This is usually a fuse. Then move the red wire on the metre from the "VOLTS" to the "AMP" plug, select the setting that is the next highest rated on the info panel on the appliance. connect the red metre wire to the black power wire and the black metre wire to where the power wire was. Plug and read.
Do you know if you can measure amps if you short the coil? would that not show the maximum amps out put? - i tryed it with my generator an i had an amp reading. does that normally happen? i use a digital meter
Good reminder: Disconnect the wires from one of the element connectors if the element you are testing has two switch-to-element wires attached to each element connector. It is unnecessary to disconnect the wires, however, if only one wire is attached to each element connector.
@horseburger Same here man. Instructions in Chinese and Spanish and German and a bunch of other languages, and none of them any of the 3 languages I speak. World needs a universal language badly.
I'm a tutor some students at U.N.T. and T.W.U in Denton and have referred this video to them as most of them are broke and have to repair and/or replace parts of their equipment. Knowing how to use a meter has saved them a lot of money and quite probably their grade.
This was of no use to me. I guess you have to be a professional to understand this. I bought a Sperry analog meter and simply wanted to check if there is electricity coming to the item I have to check or not... Next video...
Hers a couple of tips from someone that knows nothing. Never unplug an appliance while the cable is under load as it will cause arcing on the pins and contact surfaces in the socket. Never pull a plug out by the lead. always grasp the plug body.
It is nice to see women in this field. I am in classes for electronics and I am looking for all the input I can. I did enjoy this video and I learned not to check the ohms under power and it will stick with me because of this video. THANKS
I just saw ur video and had a question. the clamp multimeter i have starts buzzing in resistance measurement mode without even bringing the pins in contact with each other or with any circuit. what does it mean?
Arnold this is great. I always check that the ground connection is good, case to plug before anything else. Probably a mistake to refer to the white lead as a hot lead on a 110 kiln. I am trying to find someone to go to your seminar. I sent the link to this video out to my students.

Disconnect the elements before measuring.
If you do not you can get a false reading.
