The reason she was blowing up cars is because at that time just like now. It was a symbol. Suppose to show how much money you have or how cool you are. YUPPIES! The more things u own the better u are then everyone else. Status symbol
@finmarc "Pure adrenaline"? The 80's are synonymous with total crap music. Yeah, Duran Duran, Toto, Journey, Asia, Foreigner, The Snowmen, Renee & Renato, Falco were "pure adrenaline". Do you know what adrenaline is? There's ALWAYS crap being made, and there's ALWAYS good stuff being made.
she was my grandma ,sweet weird woman i loved her! she would burn me with ciggs and threaten the neighbors with an ass beatin bcuz they said sumthin bout her lettin me drink at ten yrs old,she told em fuck the fuck off! miss ya granny...
@mrtony19552055 She was more than all those things that the media portrayed, she was a loving woman but did what she wanted, how she wanted and never sold out. A real legend and rock and roller...No one believes that she is my gamma but I don't care what people think really. but thanks for the comment. Peace...
I started listening to the Plasmatics when "New Hope" came out and I was still a teenager. I think she was a great role model for women even though some feminists would disagree; but think about it: if you're a guy you see her and don't know if she wants to f*ck you or fight you! LOL! I was lucky enough to see them NY's Eve 1981 in Boston -- snuck in during soundcheck and got to meet Wendy and got her autograph and she was REALLY nice! The world just is not the same without her. : ( R.I.P.
Awesome! historic performance! - Tom was cool! for havin' bands like the Plasmatics on! & for lettin' them blow up the car! - he must a been a punker at heart! (yeah, too bad it was a classic Nova!) - Wendy and band of course Schreddin'!
There's only one problem. Why the hell couldn't the band have blasted a Chevy Vega, Chevette or Ford Pinto? It'd been more appropriate in my not-so-humble opinion to blast one of those pieces of s**t than a Nova! Digressions aside, a cool episode and it's a damned shame that both Tom and Wendy aren't with us anymore. :(
Mainly because when this vid was made, there was no distinction between any of those cars in regards to future value. You could have bought that nova for a few hundred bucks then. I know, because I bought one. My friend had a vega. They were both equally JUNK. There are more '57 Chevys on the road today than all of the cars you named, combined. Not trying to flame, it's just true.
Even then, the Nova still had some 'clout' and character, especially if it had a 307 or larger V8 (although the six wasn't a bad motor). I'm sorry you wound up with a lemon. The sub-trash-compactors I mentioned were completely bereft of any integrity or character. While I'll agree you almost never see such cars around anymore, you'll still see some Novas and Chevelles around along with some similar era Plymouth Dusters.
@999manman - By the mid-'70s GM thought It could make junk and people would still buy it. With all the emissions controls stifling those cars of their performance, I can believe it, especially with a six (I'm assuming you had the in-line 250 cu. in. engine). The older Novas were better cars.
@thespeez I agree, why blow up a Nova? They're good cars...well all but maybe the shit box 1980's models. But a point was made, when this video was made (early 80's), Novas were a dime a dozen and not regarded as a "collector" status as they are today. I do agree with you I'd rather her have blown up a Pinto or a Chevette.
So remember watching this LIVE on tv that night. Was like 16 years old, couldn't sleep a wink after seeing it, was so intense that nothing came close to it. They were so ahead of their time, for sure.
I don't have the date in front of me now but it would have been around 1981 right after she was busted in Milwaukee. All of this information is on the Wendy O/Plasmatics DVD "10 Years of Revolutionary R n R" which I highly recommend if you don't have it
Saw this on television when it first aired, and taped it on a beta-vision cassette, no less. Watched it numerous times. Great performance. Part of the whole punk thing, Wendy O. and the Plasmatics were one of my favorite bands growing up. I'm 42, and I am still, admittedly, pissed off. I just can't remember why. Bless you, Wendy, my leather-clad darling. I miss you...
After 8 years of Bush-Cheney, I can now appreciate Wendy and her contempt for the establishment and the status quo. Enron+Countrywide+endless war in Iraq= misery for the common man.
And Tom Snyder! I hope you're resting in peace too. I used to watch your show all the time even though it didn't come on until 1 am. I remember you smoking like a chimney and saying the studio was cold. You & Cosell. Both unique, both great, both outside the box. There's no one who can fill your shoes today, that's for sure. Thanks for posting this!
Thanks for this post. The new DVD "10 Years of Revolutionary Rock 'N' Roll" is amazing. Although this is from the rockumentary part of the DVD, there's also a full length live version of this song which was obviously way too heavy for TV. RIP.
the fury and power that you felt during a wendy show will never be duplicated wendy was in arizona when we met her you dont even know hatred for the establishment you actually were affected by the sonic fury that was the plasmatics your shomach hurt from the adrenalin rush have you ever been on stage? yeah that feeling
The clips here are form the 10 Years of Revolutionary Rock N Roll DVD which I just got and is completely amazing. The live stuff has never been equalled
I wish I were alive when this was going on...do you know how many bands/people have copied this shit or parts of it since? Amazing! Of course it's all pose now...

@thespeez I had a '76 Nova Concourse that was a crime to humanity...it had a puny 6 cylinder and would conk out at every stoplight.

"wendy would've made a great president."
Ya know... oddly enough, I agree with you. Someone like Wendy is just what we need to shake up the establishment and move us away from Puritanism.
Not only that, but our president would also be an incredibly hot and uniquely talented ultra-babe. It's win -- win.
RIP Wendy.
