I loved going to Palisades Park on a clear day I could make it out across the Hudson It wasn't as clean as Playland (only county owned amusement park in North America probably the world in Rye NY just north of the east Bronx) and certainly not as big as Coney Island but by the time I went it Coney Island was only a shell of what it had once been Little did I know that when I first went to Palisades Park it woudl close in less than ten years so sad but time doesn't stand still
Sometimes construction and profit are costly to many individuals. Sentimental value means nothing to people when $ is involved! The deal to sell Palisades was done in 71 I believe, and they never looked back (Developers) Oh well all things must come to an end, as they say...
I lived in North Bergen, and my grandpa lived in Washington Heights; I remember driving with my Mom at night on what I think was Riverside Drive, or the FDR, and seeing the park lit up across the river. It was beautiful. I'll tell ya, the New York and New Jersey of my youth is gone........
This is almost exactly the view I remember going back and forth into the city from Westchester with my family in the car in the 60s/70s. Never made it to Palisades - it closed when I was 10, but I'll never forget this view, especially at night. Never thought I'd see it again. Thanks so much for posting this.
Yep Happy BD to you one year later that is. lol Glad you enjoyed the brief moment of my memories. Loved that park oh to much my, Mom would take me and a friend almost every weekend in the summer it was amazing. Take care fellow Tri state friends.
@sunnygrl my thoughts exactly. i was 9 when it closed but i did go there. we lived in Rockland. I remember this view from circle line and driving on the elevated west side hwy. and I sure IS swell to see this view again.
The Circle Line! Oh, I never took a cruise but I vividly remember the NYC local stations running the "Circle Line" commercial in the late 60's - early 70's!
I was searching for "Palisades" but stumbled on "Circle Line." Just as fine a memory!
Wow,I used to live directly across the view of the Palisades Park rollercoaster(on W135st&Amsterdam Ave ,circa 1970). On a clear summernight you could see those bright rollercoaster lights on the cliff as close. Memories still linger.
@joni2691YEAH I lived in Yonkers but I could see it on a clear day easily I loved the crowds, the roller coaster, the shows, the batting cages with their dead water soaked baseballs, and just about everything Once when a circus ( which one I don't know) played there there was a fire nearby in a tenement building and members of the circus were watching in the crowd including Emmet Kelly in his makeup, I'm sure it was not as special as I remember it but I'm glad I do remember it that way
