@carlhopkinson That's actually really unfunny of you to say, your wit is lacking. Also, ask yourself why you go on the internet to minimize the success of others. In my opinion, mature adults should be able to be happy for anyone who finds success and not envy or despise them for it. These feelings of jealousy and anger make you a small person. Cunt.
@dalecampbl9 on what metric? what objective standard differentiates them? if you're pushing the 'they were fakers' line, you'd do well to read any of their writings -- whether you like their work or not, they're clearly very intelligent guys -- you can't reduce your dislike of it to 'they were just charlatans'.
@TallFastLoud i told you their music is something I can produce...genius is what most people cannot do. I cannot compose a Beethoven Eroica, or Beethoven 5th, or Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra...but this crap...anyone with some training can pull it out of their ass. I'm talking about the Nocturne specifically...I'm talking about the electronic stuff from Stockhausen, the prepared piano crap, and other seemingly empty noises published as music.
@TallFastLoud look my friend, if I composed this type of music, which I can, and slapped JOHN CAGE's name on it without anyone knowing it's me....some people will be on youtube talking about how great this John CAGE work is. Go figure.
@dalecampbl9 so what do you think music must be? should it must be just a well-done masterpiece? something you can only do after a long training?
or could music be something able to stop your sense of time perception or to force you to listen what you have never heard before?
music evolution has always run on a straight line and great composers -even beethoven- were always underrated or misundertood for their works.. but then they are in musical history books for some reasons.
@antonvonwebern yes...but John Cage will be "misunderstood" for eternity...what he has accomplished is writing music in a new manner...but what he hasn't done is compose anything compelling. that's the difference. This nocturne is quite boring and meanders everywhere but it's better than his other prepared piano craptacular works.
@dalecampbl9 well... schoenberg told that cage (one of his students) is a great artist, but not a real composer. now, schoenberg is maybe the last traditional composer, the one who broke the rules and let the new music come. so he -like you now- was thinking at cage as a traditional (non)composer but he is not. he used music to make people think on what it is and the connections between music and sounds. it is a revolution,a political way of composing. music can be a lot of things!
@antonvonwebern yes...true...but what Cage did has no spark of genius...you CAN DO IT TOO...and by "YOU" I mean anyone who has a slight interest in music, can go ahead and stick stuff into a piano and then play that prepared piano. I mean seriously, it becomes a gimmick...and it cheapens music so much.
@dalecampbl9 you just do not understand, and therefore do not accept novation John... the prepared piano is not an end in itself, but the passing emotion which by common sound palette to express not.I for his musical experiments opened up new possibilities in the piano without even knowing about the existence of Cage ...You probably never had such a creative impulse, when not familiar set of sounds ...I know that the new hard to accept and understand ... but it's the only road to
@22vtjart151 take a step back and look at it again...it's a GIMMICK!! Don't make it so hard on yourself to try to force some sort of meaning out of Cago's works...they are all gimmicks! Let you what, i'll drop a piano from 10 feet in the air, and after it hits the ground and damaged, I'll play it...and it'll be my own masterpiece. What do you think of that? GIMMICK or TALENT?!?!?!
@dalecampbl9 We entered the restricted area and began to argue about tastes...Time to leave the real art and talent of the descendants...And let's not waste time ...I will except your favorite Bach, Rossini, Satie least favorite to listen to Cage...And just like you to be more tolerant of people's preferences
@sledledbetter yes...others would not think to write music this shitty, unless it was a gimmick, just my 2 cents. I mean seriously...4'33"? make me puke.
@dalecampbl9 I think your troll rants are a gimmick. Unless you're some kind of well educated music critic, which I'm assuming you're not. Personally, I don't get peoples random rage towards modern classical. It reminds me of giving a difficult puzzle to a snobby four year old and watching them freak out and throw the pieces everywhere when they can't figure it out.
@octipi I'm well versed in classical music..not in theory or composition, but I play some piano and I really like to listen. I listen to everythign and examine it whether I like to or not. And like most of these serious listeners of music, this type of music is quite simple though novel in its ways. But to hold it up as high art, that's a mockery of high art.
@dalecampbl9 Some of the most famous artists made a mockery of "high art". Duchamp, Joyce, Bartok... Mahler was famous for taking "kitsch" music and turning it into something epic. And to answer your question awhile back, I think if you dropped a piano of a building and played it, it could very possibly be art. MIT drops one every year just to hear it; Thelonius Monk did an whole show that was smashing a vase into a piano and playing one note.
@SB87JB turning it into something epic is different from stick some crap into a piano and then play on that piano and call it "epic'. NO NO NO. The idea is to ask yourself...can someone with less talent do this...and if answer is YES, then that's a good sign the music (no matter how novel it is) is not high art.
@dalecampbl9 No, that reasoning is deeply flawed. I am by no means as talented as bach, but i can play all of his preludes and fugues, and had to compose fugues for my compositional classes. According to your logic that would mean bach is not "high art" since someone of lesser talent can do it. Also, if it is so easy for someone of lesser talent to do what cage does, can you do me a favor and seek these artists out to prove your point? There should be tons since its so easy.
Wow, Cage wrote something that is almost music....unbelievable....

guys like Cage, Stockhausen, and Varese are not real musicians in the tradition of Handel/Bach/Beethoven
