I remember vacationing in Big Bear during Old Miner days in the 1950's, Colonel Jeff Cooper had retired to there from the Marine Corps and set up "Leatherslap Contests" which was the start of IPSC and the real Combat Pistolcraft concept. Prior to Cooper, military/police/FBI/etc trained to shoot pistols ONE HANDED, and it was Cooper who pointed out how fuckass stupid that was, as well as showing everyone he ABSOLUTE SUPERIORITY of the Colt 1911 for self defense.

Cooper is not only the author of modern pistolcraft, he is also

a FANTASTIC writer. And not just about guns. His topics are quite varied and I cannot recommend exploring them highly enough.

Jeff was the Godfather of the shooting sports. I stumbled upon. To Ride, Shoot Straight and Speak the Truth. I wish I could have met this man. He will forever be a legend.

Oh man. I read everything Col Cooper had to say, "Cooper On Handguns" was my bible in the 70's. I knew he died at an advanced age, I just didn't know how decrepit he became. He should have had a heart attack 15 years earlier.
