The fact is: No one has all the data & numbers to compare and see who sold more tickets, who sold more shirts, who drew the most money into WWF/E. We just can rely on what they tell us. As far as I know Vince McMahon said at Austin's induction into the hall of fame that he simply is the greatest star of all time. On some videos John Cena says something more reliable like: "Just looking at the numbers makes clear Stone Cold Steve Austin is the number one." Rock was huge, Austin was the greatest.

@Mondlichtklar That is not "the fact". By 2000 Rock was far bigger than Austin ever was & sold $21 million in merchandise alone that year as opposed to Austin's $15 million. When Austin returned from injury Rock was far too over to even use him so they stuck him in a feud with Rikishi & turned him heel when finally facing Rock at WM17. The video games, the show(Smackdown), magazines, were all given to Rock.

Rock was what Austin could never be for the WWF, & that's a media magnet.

I'm not denying Austin sold a lot of merchandise, the peak of his merchandise sales though was before Rock a lot of merchandise. In 1998 Rock didn't have any almost throughout the entire year, and he didn't have that much in early '99 either. I think he started having a lot of merchandise in mid '99 after he turned face. Because they're from the same era it's very hard to say Austin "outsold" The Rock, especially from mid 1999-early 2002.

Rock wasn't expected to become the megaface he was in 1999-2002, he was originally being pushed as the top heel Attitude Era along with Vince McMahon, but he was to entertaining to get 100% heel heat, so HHH got the top heel spot instead. Even in the fall of '98 prior to Survivor Series he was getting pops near Austin's level, and he wasn't even at his peak yet.

And Rock holds the record for biggest gates in wrestling history, he broke the record Austin set in '98, just look up "top wrestling draws by year" and there is a list of the top draws from wrestling observer from 1908-2008. Not taking away from Austin's drawing ability in 1998-mid 1999, but we can agree that during that time he was rebelling against the boss and didn't lose much, while at Rock wasn't always the top focus of the show at his peak, they were pushed differently.

@essexboy2006 Kane back in 99, 2000, and 2001 was an amaizing character, best wrestler in WWF. He became a boring and pathetic character when he went unmasked, they killed him! I liked the rock and Austin too but I hated it when they would always make Kane to appear weaker than those 2! I wanted to see him as the champ, unfortunately it never happened!

His entrance, the 'hell fire' pyro, etc all matched perfectly to the demon-like gimmick he had back then.
