Have never found the need for a 'caller' in any RPG session I have ever played over many years of awesome sessions. Always acted very much as if it were really happening and that was all that was necessary for some of the most amazing times so a huge rubbish to this for the suggestion from this very experienced role-player... you all decide what to do and then a good games master times it out... you'd only need a spokes person if your group was too large to start with or the GM is an idiot!
Just don't throw me in the wilderness as level 1 with peasant clothes, no weapons, no armor, an empty spellbook, no money, alone with no people in my party. PLZ!

I want to know how to play without a battle grid. how exactly do you map out a dungeon without ruining the fantasy, b/c you cant really say four squars wide five long. it ruins imersion. and you cant give them a prerendered map b/c they dont know what the room looks like yet. idk. how have you solved this?

With the monster manual (and if you use 3.5, not 4th ed, get the chance a few back issues of Dungeon magazine) you'll be able to create more elaborate encounters, and stories to go with them.
Everyone needs to read the Players Handbook, or at least read what type of character they want to play. Then build some level one's and the Dungeon Master will make the scenerio...

You need the Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide and a Monster Manual. The players should buy their own Player's Handbook. Each players need to buy a RPG dice set. I would recommend playing 4th Edition of DnD since you never played the other editions. This is because 4th Edition is more intuitive and easy to keep track.
Some people lke to play the newer versions but i dont. If u play like me then its not expensive all you need is your mind, pen, and paper... and make the map yourself. I dont use all the models, i use my mind. the GM tells you whats around and you imagin it. Its more fun.
Depends on which game you want to play and how far into the game and setting you want to get. Figure 4th Ed D&D it's 3 books (Player's HB, Dungeon Master's Guide and the 1st Monster Manual) at about $30-40 each plus $5-10 of dice. You can buy more books to expand on the game if you like. (..and you can never have enough dice;)...it's a roleplayer thing).
Well, in the case of D20 Modern or Star Wars RPG "dungeons" have no relevance, so they're referred to as GM. This does address RPGs in general, after all.
@wiseone0001 A game master is a generic term for which all other "master" titles are branched under. Still a DM in D&D, but if you are playing PARANOIA or SPELL-JAMMER most settings aren't based in dungeons, therefore, the title isn't relevant. Besides a Game Master is like a DM+3 enchanted with the spell: "Unbreakable Madness"

After showing the book to my pastor, he agreed that these books are very, very dangerous for our children. With the help of other concerned parents at our church, we are beginning a campaign to get rid of these books from the local libraries in our town, so that no innicent children can be exposed to such Satanic filth.

Sometimes I GM online from my work as a security guard. Me and my online group are creatures of the night. I just wish I had more time to sleep in between my last shift for the week and the Sunday game with my Pen and Paper group that happens less than 6 hours after I'm back but such is life.
Also, you're missing some celebrity gamers, but that's fine.
For those who think this is a game and/or style of gaming for losers, I won't even contest it, no one on this planet is cool, the second we realize that the better and we can all just have fun being game nerds, WoW junkies, Trekkies/Trekkers, LARPers, Civil War re-enacters, UFC fans with their fave TAPOUT shirt on, or guys that paint themselves up for NFL, NHL or NBA.
More people today need this HOBBY, just to spend some quality time with your friends sitting around a table, the same as you would when you go over to your buddy's for poker night. The Table Top RPG genre offers something for everyone.

I have been and still am a DM/GM for almost 14 years now, the only thing I tell my guys is "This is just a hobby, a very passion driven one but still, just a hobby, learn to walk away from the game." Often times I would go game with the guys and then start my shift bouncing at the bar 8 hrs later.

Anything with any RPG elements in it leads back to D&D, from final fantasy to team fortress to any game in which you have an HP bar.
errrm... no. Im 99.9% sure god didnt base the world on D&D. Even video games usually have elements of their own. Infact the most impact anything has had on fantasy is J.R Tolkien and his lord of the rings series. I could name many elements in those books that were caried down to video games and such. But back to D&D, HP bars were not based off of D&D, they based off a classic 1940 something game where 10 lives (HP) before you were out of the game. RPG, doesnt mean RP, RP is D&D they R differnet
Suit yourself. D&D is an RPG, the FIRST RPG. It is a Game wherein you Role Play. Nowadays it just means 'A level-up game.' D&D was the first game with a levelling up system. Ever. D&D itself is based heavily on LOTR and many many fantasy writers of the time. A lot of modern fantasy however is inspired by D&D worlds and on other fantasy books inspired by D&D. You don't have to believe me, but it inspired a lot.
Also, the Hit Point system was first used by the game chainmail, D&D's precursor.

You use what is called marching order and everyone reacts in that order. (my pcs roll for thier spot in the order at the begining of the game) -its that simple!

It depends on what you have the pc's(player characters) do. If you have them as ordinary combatants or even leaders in war, its going to get boring. what you can do is, have the pc's be a strike team for an army and have them do missions like destroying strategic points, hit-and-running enemy camps, cutting supply lines, etc.

I ALWAYS order the campaign in meeting, seeking , going. you have to meet companions first (I give XP for creative encounters), you then have to agree on what you're after...just saying "we're adventurers BwahaHAHA!!" is idiotic - find a damn purpose or a map or a rumor, or something. Then, go get it. Kidnap somebody, if you have to...sheesh. Start a war, ew, that's fun...

It is the Dungeon Master's job to interpret the players actions. Notice the period at the end of that sentence.
Having a 'caller' just adds another level of complexity without adding anything to the game.
PC's aren't unionized, so they don't need anyone speaking for them. They call their own actions and you deal with it - even if it means a TPK.

Dungeon Master is commonly used in D&D, D20 for example call the DM a Game Master.

Well, in the case of D20 Modern or Star Wars RPG "dungeons" have no relevance, so they're referred to as GM. This does address RPGs in general, after all.

@wiseone0001 A game master is a generic term for which all other "master" titles are branched under. Still a DM in D&D, but if you are playing PARANOIA or SPELL-JAMMER most settings aren't based in dungeons, therefore, the title isn't relevant. Besides a Game Master is like a DM+3 enchanted with the spell: "Unbreakable Madness"

I have never played with a so-called "caller". How hard is it to go around the table and ask what each person what they want to do? I don't want anyone speaking for my character.

What I do is have my players roll the d20 and whoever has the highest goes first and we go clockwise. It works.

I confiscated my son's Dungeons and Dragons book because I was appalled at all the Satanic and anti Christian imagery these books convey! After showing the book to my pastor, he agreed that these books are very, very dangerous for our children. With the help of other concerned parents at our church, we are beginning a campaign to get rid of these books from the local libraries in our town, so that no innicent children can be exposed to such Satanic filth.

I can see and repect your concern for yours and the rest of Americas youth but there is no reason whatsoever for such radical and single minded censorship. The books provide a basis for many lifelong friendships and encourage out-of-the-box nonlinear thinking and problem solving, not to metion hours of fun. You can interpret them how you wish and it looks like you wish to interpret them with the most negative way possible.

this is such a great game!
currently im almost 14. i started rpg games at age 6 b/c it runs through our entire faliy
the first game i played was V&V or villains and vigialantis... i cant spell it..lol
then i got right into DND! i love it after being a player char. for 5 yrs, i was allowed to finnaly DM, or GM... for everyone who makes fun of this... shut up for once... this is a great game to get to know ppl....

Most games would need the dice. Usually 'basic sets' come in boxes. Most boxed sets have a set of dice in them, but not always. What game is it?

Sometimes I wish my DM would be a little easier on us. Like I really wanted to come across a cool animal that I could tame to ride, so he sends like a 30 feet tall giant spider that ended up killing us all, lol.

Sometimes I GM online from my work as a security guard. Me and my online group are creatures of the night. I just wish I had more time to sleep in between my last shift for the week and the Sunday game with my Pen and Paper group that happens less than 6 hours after I'm back but such is life.
Also, you're missing some celebrity gamers, but that's fine.

For those who think this is a game and/or style of gaming for losers, I won't even contest it, no one on this planet is cool, the second we realize that the better and we can all just have fun being game nerds, WoW junkies, Trekkies/Trekkers, LARPers, Civil War re-enacters, UFC fans with their fave TAPOUT shirt on, or guys that paint themselves up for NFL, NHL or NBA.

This is has always been a great game, no matter the edition, personal preferences aside of course.
I have been and still am a DM/GM for almost 14 years now, the only thing I tell my guys is "This is just a hobby, a very passion driven one but still, just a hobby, learn to walk away from the game." Often times I would go game with the guys and then start my shift bouncing at the bar 8 hrs later.

i was the dungeon aster or w/e its called back when i played this kinda my mom had an old d&d set that me and my friends dug out to make fun of i believe that it ended with the sorcerer pulling and ak47 on the theif after which the warrior lit an orphanage on fire then chuck norris killed them all im a wonderful dungeon master sometimes i kill people out of spite like if they win a fight i call 5X the monsters if they win that the star ship enterprise crashes into their head

Make-believe in fairy land is responsible for over 60% of the things you believe to be cool. You see things inspired by D&D on TV, in just about every popular videogame, all over the internet. Anything with any RPG elements in it leads back to D&D, from final fantasy to team fortress to any game in which you have an HP bar.

errrm... no. Im 99.9% sure god didnt base the world on D&D. Even video games usually have elements of their own. Infact the most impact anything has had on fantasy is J.R Tolkien and his lord of the rings series. I could name many elements in those books that were caried down to video games and such. But back to D&D, HP bars were not based off of D&D, they based off a classic 1940 something game where 10 lives (HP) before you were out of the game. RPG, doesnt mean RP, RP is D&D they R differnet

Suit yourself. D&D is an RPG, the FIRST RPG. It is a Game wherein you Role Play. Nowadays it just means 'A level-up game.' D&D was the first game with a levelling up system. Ever. D&D itself is based heavily on LOTR and many many fantasy writers of the time. A lot of modern fantasy however is inspired by D&D worlds and on other fantasy books inspired by D&D. You don't have to believe me, but it inspired a lot.
Also, the Hit Point system was first used by the game chainmail, D&D's precursor.

sorry but i dont agree with the "caller" idea. I let people be as natural as they want.Let them talk! Pcs who arent the caller are going to feel in a lower position.
You use what is called marching order and everyone reacts in that order. (my pcs roll for thier spot in the order at the begining of the game) -its that simple!

im Ordering this game right now! i just found a place to order it! its only 1 left to order! WHAHAHAH! i have been looking on google for AGES now! finally im finding it! im goin to be DM... that sounds most fun! im, in the end of my adventure im a high lv evil mage and i can summon monsters to attack the enemy. then, i teleport away after some attacks if they dont reach to kill me. then lots of big monsters kill them and they lose! AHAHHA! :D

It depends on what you have the pc's(player characters) do. If you have them as ordinary combatants or even leaders in war, its going to get boring. what you can do is, have the pc's be a strike team for an army and have them do missions like destroying strategic points, hit-and-running enemy camps, cutting supply lines, etc.
War is hell if you make it hell.

Wow, suddenly you're in the woods and you see these red eyes...That sounds like the most dry adventure I've ever heard. I ALWAYS order the campaign in meeting, seeking , going. you have to meet companions first (I give XP for creative encounters), you then have to agree on what you're after...just saying "we're adventurers BwahaHAHA!!" is idiotic - find a damn purpose or a map or a rumor, or something. Then, go get it. Kidnap somebody, if you have to...sheesh. Start a war, ew, that's fun...
