i love the change from acting mode to the i'm gonna pis my pant's this was so funny mode. he looks great here but i prefer his late 40s look got some more meat on him ;)
You know ?,i'm surprised he can keep a 'straight' face for as long as he does doing this ; it might be cos of familiarity with the routine and the constant rehearsal of it beforehand that helps
@cmt39 Yeah but corpsing is always more funny than if it goes to plan, as its funny to see a good performer who is making you laugh anyway, become themselves and kind of human and vulnerable losing control and realising it.The performer probably thinks theyve messed things up cos they want to be perfect but like in this clip, for the audience it's a lot of fun
It is so weird to me how his persona can change so completely and so suddenly, like when he goes from his spoof character to his regular Jerry Lewis character. It's like a completely different person!!!
lol he almost lost it when he cleared the table...but he regained it...but once he saw that hand...he wasn't able to keep it anymore...XD and i also love when he switches from the low voice to his high squeeky voice at the end so quickly and smoothly :)
@52vegeta52 It's strange how a split second loss of concentration or focus in this kind of work can be so funny. It's like he becomes the audience for a moment instead of the performer when something makes him THINK of how funny something he's done is ; i dont think it's so much the hand that makes him lose it but the next line about the Gym which makes him realise how funny it is and distracts him.I always think that 'corpsing' is much funnier than when things go smooth the whole way
@Jessmira23 I think he says "Beau Brummell" who was the guy who established men's clothing fashion in the 1700's. According to wikipedia, he is said to have taken 4 hours to dress, and polished his shoes with champagne.
@seajayaway Thanks! I was waiting so long for someone to clear that up :) In another skit he says the same thing and Dean actually corrects him while laughing. Cute :)
It was a show where a suave dude would look into the camera and tell the female viewers how he would romance them. SNL famously spoofed it with Christopher Walken as the Intercontinental
Isnt 'corpsing' an incredible thing ? Its caused when you think about it by a loss of concentration or focus on what youre doing and instead actually THINK ABOUT what youre doing and see it from the audiences perspective but how brilliant it always is and amazing how they can get composure back after theyve lost it !
Jerry is sooo funny!! i love watching these old clips. thanks so much. every now and then, i just need a colgate comedy hour pick-me-up.
and wow, people used to have such a joyous time in those old audiences. things were actually laugh out loud funny and creative. we need more variety shows instead of reality shows.
Fans youre so right. JERRY LEWIS was great looking during COLGATE COMEDY HOUR tyears. he wasnt the monkey as he terms himself. he was a looker better thanDean. ah i miss those days. live comedy, Eddie Cantor Abbott&Costello,Fred Allen & Martin&Lewis in their prime. Tv at its best. the golden 50s. This tv filmhistorian here knew many of these stars of yesteryear. thanks Youtube and thank you JERRY LEWIS. youre still great. TOMK
i love martin and lewis lol they were amazing i wish i was around when they were big. where did you get this clip? was it off a dvd? if yes what was the name of it because i would love to have this episoade on dvd xx! thank's if you can help it would ge great!XX
i'm just gonna say, people from the 40's and 50's could be REALLY easily entertained, but i guess a generation WOWED by the light bulb and musicals would have seen this as AWESOME, but Jerry is really good at getting into character and all
Dude, comedians these days suck. Abott and Costello, Jerry Lewis etc are 10 times funnier. I can't think of any great comedians of late who have the longivity of the greats. If you take out the laughter of the people who paid $80 to see them live you wouldn't find them quite so funny either.
Absolutely love this sketch. Noone comes even close to the talent and comic abilities of the handsome genius that is Jerry Lewis and his equally handsome partner Dean Martin.
hey, poeple make fun of me for liking these two as well....but most people these days dont have a sense of humour anymore...jerry and dean will always be the best comedians ever!!!
I'm 20 and new to Jerry Lewis myself. I've been a fan for several months now after dicovering The Nutty Professor and have bought his films ever since. He's a true legend, him and the great Dean Martin. I'm still trying to get my hands on the set of the colgate comedy hour, I only have volumes 1 & 2. And yes, I agree with MrKiwi63, some people these days have no sense of humor at all. Old habits die hard! You can never get any better than the classics.
i am 14 just two yrs older and i think the are soooooooo funny i think they are the best! dont worry about it oh and i am reading this book and it is about them it is called, Dean and Me. it is by Jerry Lewis it is a very good book! :)
its with the AMAZING Christopher Walkins He plays this creepy guy who invite a woman to his apartment and the whole time try to get her in to bed!!! Classic!!
I remember that now. That is an awesome skit. I can totally see him doing something that Jerry had already done since Jerry is the one who told him he should pursue his career in acting.
"I'm a multi-faceted, talented, wealthy, internationally famous genius. I have an IQ of 190 -- that's supposed to be a genius. People don't like that. My answer to all my critics is simple: I like me. I like what I've become. I'm proud of what I've achieved, and I don't really believe I've scratched the surface yet".-Jerry Lewis
Yeah, alot of people like different types of comedy...I personally LOVE Jerry Lewis...but some people just can't get a hold of his type of comedy and some just don't understand it, i guess...?
what dvd collection is it ? I got one, with 5 dvds, but here at youtube I see new Clips with Lewis and Martin on the Comedy Hour...has anybody got a link for me ? It would be great...
Only Christopher Walken's occasional attempts at parodying "The Continental" on "SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE" matched this. You must realize that "THE CONTINENTAL" was seen nationally (and in New York) during the '50s, with Renzo Cesana delivering an ultra-romantic monologue at the women in the audience...VERY smooth, suave and sophisticated.
I love the way he dance to. My first movie I saw with Jerry Lewis was also Nutty Professor. I just love his style of comedy, He's a genious. He is handsome so of course I like his smile and his gestures just make you fall in love with him even more. I guess for me, He is a cool classic man. Just from that alone He pulls me in. He is just so talented and dramatic, I watch just to see what he will do next. I just love me some JERRY LEWIS.
I have a question, i never really thought that someone around my age would be interested in Jerry Lewis. I a very big fan of his and i was wondering how some of you came to love him so much.
I grew up watching him in movies and sometimes on television, but the time that I really started getting into him was when I first saw The Nutty Professor (I was about nine) and I was completely marveled at how someone could change character and voice and everything like that so easily. He became a big inspiration to me for comedy, and so I started getting more creative with it; the rest is histroy.
Very cool, the very first movie i saw with him was Living It Up. After the jitterbug i was hooked. Not very many comedians can dance like that, let alone make me laugh.
Very true. I think a lot of it has to do with the era he grew up in, and also, his mother was a professional dancer for Vaudeville. I love watching him dance. It's great! I fell in love with swing dancing at a very young age, and my grandpa taught me how to jitterbug, and when I was about 16 I took professional lessons in CA. I still dance today, not as frequent as I would like though. I'll be getting back into it soon.
I just saw this last night at like, 2:45 in the morning, and I laughed SO hard because 2 minutes into the skit I rememebered Christopher Walken doing this kind of skit on SNL, and it just clicked. But Jerry is SO much funnier...naturally.
"You been goin' to the gym ain't you?" and then that gorgeous, radiant smile as he cracks up. So sweet!!!!!

My friend and I were Dean Martin fans, and we started watching some Dean and Jerry stuff, and after that Jerry just became my hero. I love him!

That's EXACTLY what happened to me! Come for Dean, stay for Jerry.

I just saw this last night at like, 2:45 in the morning, and I laughed SO hard because 2 minutes into the skit I rememebered Christopher Walken doing this kind of skit on SNL, and it just clicked. But Jerry is SO much funnier...naturally.
