oh no I don't prefer 1 main pianist in particular but I must admit that with composers I always tend to Bach. Horrowitz' rubato is legendary indeed btw :) hmm, no I don't tend to go to concerts (or perform myself in that case) since im a little crowd shy (to say the least ha). But yes.. eventually I have to see him live someday!
I did eurythmy with this piece at my graduation. Thank you, teachers!! to give me a chance to know this music. This is so beautiful and I like his interpretation best, so far.
@meltsheep I just wanted to give you some backup here, because other people kept speeking 'bout Busoni's fine transcription. And to give them some more ways of checking it themselves ;-)
watch the last scene of Tarkovski's masterpiece "Solaris", then go the piano and play this piece. After that you can go to sleep in serenity, your life has a meaning.
Quanto a Bach... "Non tutti i compositori credono in Dio, tutti i compositori credono in Bach"
The speed is so perfect that I have no doubt whatsoever that Bach played it himself at the organ at this speed. It's an amazing experience when you get that feeling.
@janvkimm Right?! It is absolutely amazing what he manages to do with the piano! It is so deep- the melody. Must say that I which I could play on that piano also :)
JESUS CHRISTUS unser Herr, Gottes Wort, Gottes Sohn, .... - Johannes 11,-25-26-
He plays his own transcription (he told me) and looking at the score, Busoni adds four bars that are not in Bach's original --- don't have an urtext to check for sure however.
@meltsheep Correct, he isn't playing the Busoni transcription. Busoni added quite some extra's in the bass too, if you listen carefully and compare with the Busoni-score or with other versions on youtube with the Busoni transcription you can easily hear the differences! Sokolov's version remains closer to Bach's original.
Very beautiful interpretation, but why does he skip the last 4 bars of the piece??? Have a look at the score and/or compare with Horowitz to see what I mean.
Astroedic, you have the nerve to suggest Martin Stadtfeld (!!) as a great Bach player over Sokolov? He is perfect example of young pianist with good fingers being led down a wrong road, not his fault, but teacher's. Passionless, dead playing. His Schumann C major Toccata is like player-piano. His Ich Ruf melody he pounds out. That you tout such playing shows your opinions worthless. He has talent, but needs great teacher to rescue him, show that music must be expressed, not merely "played".
I´m not even defending that man; I guess he will survive your attack and does not need my comradeship. I prefer Angela Hewitt anyway, she´s going to come to Munich anyway, did you know? And by the way, thanks for calling me an artist. I´m practicing piano 2 hours every day, but no one had ever called me an artist - that gives that sunday a new dimension.
Oh God, where is this aggression coming from? Maybe one does not like him, but is he moron? I mean, Glenn Gould´s staccato-like playing sometimes gets on one ´s nerves, too. But moron? What an ugly word! I´d never say that for an artist who gives his best.
Some frustation there uh? Overweight has a definition, there are objective standards. You have no power over anyone even if you think you do. Professional means that it is your profession, not that you have any authority or are better than other artists, specially not better than Sokolov, by a long long shot. Pride has many shapes and many forms, it always involves effort. Too bad no chance of peaceful dialogue... Wish you well, karmic professional.
well spoken but can you do a bit more than just talk. Professional means exactly that: authority. And you have no idea whether I am better or worse than Sokolov and how much, this is an opinion, not a fact. I do NOT have to be better than Sokolov to know that he is not good, that is what professional means. But for you it is obviously hard to understand simply because your ears are not trained but your tongue is moving fast...
I know many of them. Great ones. Opinion, fact and truth are different. You have no authority by commenting your opinions. That Sokolov is fat is a fact, that he is a moron is an opinion. Saying he is fat is not judging him, it is stating a fact, which by the way has nothing to do with the music he makes. If you tell a chair to move and it doesn't move, you have no authority over it. If you grab it and move it then yes. By stating whatever you are convinced of, you are only making opinions. Bye
I will check them out, still I think that is an uncalled agressive comment to say of Sokolov. Unless you are talking about something besides his musicianship, like his personality, etc.
Anyway, if you have more pianists to recommend you could send me a private message. Save the judgmental comments though, I don't care for that kind of discussion where people claim some things are valid and others are despicable, authority is the capacity to exercise power over something. Opinions lack authority
Astroedic, I can't thank you enough. Your comment has opened a wonderful door for me, that pianist is a new legend and I found him extremely inspirational and a great model to follow as well as pianists like Sokolov.
My most appreciated regards to this Great Master. It is impressive the deep sense he has of this piece. There is so much to learn from him, and from his performing.
Almost ideal: Gouldian in its less diffusely focussed note shaping and its clearer marking of the vertical/horizontal identities of the contrapuntal terraces; in its understated cantando and expression of emotion by implying its being witheld. GS has, just like G, troubled to rewrite the piece to solve 'impossible' stretches at 2:24 and 2:34 - 2:39 with strictly 'in-time' markings-up of these moments into new, agogic, ornamental material. B Glemser is superb!, but no consistent underlying pulse.
Bach started to really touch me after seeing Gould's performance of "Goldberg Variations, 1981" - so it strongly depends who plays Bach and how it is played to feel the touches... ;-D
amazing. shame the pdf isnt the same as what he plays.
