  • amazing. shame the pdf isnt the same as what he plays.

  • May God blees your heart Grigory, as you have blessed ours with your music.

  • One just can sit there and listen in awe.- Mr. Bach,Mr. Sokolov,to which planet do you belong ?

  • I have no words. This is the very first time to listen to this magnificent piece and I feel like my feelings are being released in the air. Classical music is a very precious gift gave by God to humanity.

I would appreciate if anyone could send me the music sheet. Thank you.

  • @B337h0v3n It is incredible that this music could be fixed on paper.-Go to the "Petrucci-Library" and search for "BWV 639,Busoni".-2 pages of eternity.-

  • @prinzparsiphal777 Thank you very much for the response! I will start right away learning it.

  • @B337h0v3n I can send you a copy of the music sheet. Please send me your address.

  • @gqnum could u send me a copy please. nathan_916@hotmail.com

  • Absolut ueberragend !

  • Just before the Old Man up there hit the switch for the Big Bang, he played this choral, anticipating all the pains and sufferings of mankind.

  • belleza absoluta

  • With out any doubt we salute master Sokolov's interpretation of this divine choral prelude however if you want this piece to reach the depths of your soul, check out Tatiana Nikolayva

  • @Dougol1 Horowitz,Lipatti,Sokolov : Outstanding.-

    Tatiana Nikolayeva : HEARTBREAKING.-

  • Beautiful playing, but it has be said that this is Bach arr Busoni arr Sokolov!

  • great music, great pianist, wonderfull

  • Breathtaking, Incredibly beautiful and not of this world!

  • Wonderful

  • It seams to me,he used original, ORGAN,version.In1978 it was so.

  • MIRACULOUS! TY A for posting.

  • one of the better interpretations but nothing touches Horrowitz !

  • @RemovdSande11 I hate these hollow statements, please explain why his is better. (it's Horowitz btw)

  • @titusbeertsen

very nice rendition but Horrowitz plays it much better and original (opinion, if you like this version more than so be it! ;)

  • @titusbeertsen

oh no I don't prefer 1 main pianist in particular but I must admit that with composers I always tend to Bach. Horrowitz' rubato is legendary indeed btw :) hmm, no I don't tend to go to concerts (or perform myself in that case) since im a little crowd shy (to say the least ha). But yes.. eventually I have to see him live someday!

  • Never mind. I listened to the whole piece and read all of the comments here. This is definitely the Maestro's own version of this piece. I like it.

  • Does he throw some extra mordents in there or am I reading the music wrong? Or perhaps I have a different edition?

  • @jjp009 Yes, there are some ornaments that aren't written by Busoni. Beautiful.

  • I did eurythmy with this piece at my graduation. Thank you, teachers!! to give me a chance to know this music. This is so beautiful and I like his interpretation best, so far.

  • I love pianists/musicians, who see the composer in the focus, and not their interpretation...

  • The ending in major sends chill to me

  • @tovstenko true its magic there..

  • Comment removed

  • The greatest pianist alive, in my humble opinion.

  • I know I am correct because Mastro Sokolov told me it was his transcription!

  • @meltsheep I just wanted to give you some backup here, because other people kept speeking 'bout Busoni's fine transcription. And to give them some more ways of checking it themselves ;-)

  • watch the last scene of Tarkovski's masterpiece "Solaris", then go the piano and play this piece. After that you can go to sleep in serenity, your life has a meaning.

  • last Saturday I heard him in Luzern.

The Tickets were soooo expensive but i would pay even more to hear him again..

A whole evening so brilliant! He's a genius

  • @XxbambambxX

he comes to zurich in march 2011.

    luzern was an incredible concert...

  • @bratzko79 yes it was just... WOW

but many people didn't enjoy his 6 or 7 extra benefits^^ (Can't understand them...)

  • watch the original film "solaris" by tartostky, russian director, a brautiful version by edmund artemyev on a huge russian organ.

  • I would love to hear this live

  • A great pianist, one of the 'old generation'...

  • @lebendebilder

    And What a COMPOSITION !!

Do you know which earth this is..Our earth ?

    I cannot imagine.

    Thank you for your comment.

  • Unusually clearly...

  • Nooooooooooooooooo, adessso piango!

Quanto a Bach... "Non tutti i compositori credono in Dio, tutti i compositori credono in Bach"

  • The speed is so perfect that I have no doubt whatsoever that Bach played it himself at the organ at this speed. It's an amazing experience when you get that feeling.

  • His interpretation is so deep...

    What a great pianist!

  • @gonrolgonrol

    Hello !

I am stunned about the sound he produces.

    Incomprehensible !

    a pianist.

  • @janvkimm Right?! It is absolutely amazing what he manages to do with the piano! It is so deep- the melody. Must say that I which I could play on that piano also :)

  • Such a beauty.

  • thanks !

  • Sokolov je najjachi!

  • The best, simply.

  • 4. JESUS CHRISTUS unser Herr, Gottes Wort, Gottes Sohn, .... - Johannes 11,-25-26-
  • Maravilloso

  • Creates an Amazing sense of standing still,,,,almost an illusion of calm, yet another great artist from the russian school,,,,

  • A truly beautiful piece. I.m sure Bach would be most impressed by Busoni's transcription.

  • Although this originally was made for organ, it is one of my favourite piano pieces of Bach.

  • What an expression.

  • Bellissimo!

  • 2:26-2:29 = very nice! So sublime!

  • @DmitriyUA Listen to the preceding 10 seconds of 2:26 to understand exactly.

  • commovente!!

  • Mr. SOKOLOV ! Tous mes respects...

  • Tha man's a genius, that's it, nothing left to say. His interpretations are devine...

  • @jonabo86

I know him but I did not know this performance....

    What a sound,isn't it.

    Thanks

    Jan.

  • Did you and scientificwoman ever get together? :)

  • As usual, Mr Sokolov gives a convincing performance, even if the ornaments are unorthodox

  • wonderful!!!!!

  • grigory, you are the best pianist on earth (for the time being, lol)!

  • it is so difficult to understand? GREAT VIDEO choose to tell someone, I love you?, you say, if I'm wrong!

    Hail to MASTER SOKOLOV !

  • you are right, this is amazing!

  • thanks for attention...but BACH...... better...

  • here you hear Bach/Sokolov together.

Simply in this case Bach lives through Sokolov.

I think, that is the miracle of Sokolov's all performences .

  • Yeah ! I had a comment ( just look 5 comments down..from yours..) 5 month ago under sam0xin... We are so LUCKY...

  • grigory sokolov is my hero! in my opinion todays best pianist! God save his health in order to get more music of this genius.

  • Alphonse, I am very very happy

    I love you

    Your Katrin

  • it is so difficult to understand? GREAT VIDEO choose to tell someone, I love you?, you say, if I'm wrong!

  • He plays his own transcription (he told me) and looking at the score, Busoni adds four bars that are not in Bach's original --- don't have an urtext to check for sure however.

  • @meltsheep Correct, he isn't playing the Busoni transcription. Busoni added quite some extra's in the bass too, if you listen carefully and compare with the Busoni-score or with other versions on youtube with the Busoni transcription you can easily hear the differences! Sokolov's version remains closer to Bach's original.

  • Wonderful *****

    friedhelmrss

  • Very beautiful interpretation, but why does he skip the last 4 bars of the piece??? Have a look at the score and/or compare with Horowitz to see what I mean.

  • Astroedic, you have the nerve to suggest Martin Stadtfeld (!!) as a great Bach player over Sokolov? He is perfect example of young pianist with good fingers being led down a wrong road, not his fault, but teacher's. Passionless, dead playing. His Schumann C major Toccata is like player-piano. His Ich Ruf melody he pounds out. That you tout such playing shows your opinions worthless. He has talent, but needs great teacher to rescue him, show that music must be expressed, not merely "played".

  • Nevertheless, this is amazing. Thanks!

  • Eh, why is the video "no longer available?" It's been weeks now!

  • I´m not even defending that man; I guess he will survive your attack and does not need my comradeship. I prefer Angela Hewitt anyway, she´s going to come to Munich anyway, did you know? And by the way, thanks for calling me an artist. I´m practicing piano 2 hours every day, but no one had ever called me an artist - that gives that sunday a new dimension.

  • Oh God, where is this aggression coming from? Maybe one does not like him, but is he moron? I mean, Glenn Gould´s staccato-like playing sometimes gets on one ´s nerves, too. But moron? What an ugly word! I´d never say that for an artist who gives his best.

  • Some frustation there uh? Overweight has a definition, there are objective standards. You have no power over anyone even if you think you do. Professional means that it is your profession, not that you have any authority or are better than other artists, specially not better than Sokolov, by a long long shot. Pride has many shapes and many forms, it always involves effort. Too bad no chance of peaceful dialogue... Wish you well, karmic professional.

  • Okay, you are a professional, but are you an artist? That is the question. My computer also is professional.

  • fuck your authority little stupid boy

  • I know many of them. Great ones. Opinion, fact and truth are different. You have no authority by commenting your opinions. That Sokolov is fat is a fact, that he is a moron is an opinion. Saying he is fat is not judging him, it is stating a fact, which by the way has nothing to do with the music he makes. If you tell a chair to move and it doesn't move, you have no authority over it. If you grab it and move it then yes. By stating whatever you are convinced of, you are only making opinions. Bye

  • I will check them out, still I think that is an uncalled agressive comment to say of Sokolov. Unless you are talking about something besides his musicianship, like his personality, etc.

Anyway, if you have more pianists to recommend you could send me a private message. Save the judgmental comments though, I don't care for that kind of discussion where people claim some things are valid and others are despicable, authority is the capacity to exercise power over something. Opinions lack authority

  • @aryolkary Listen to Tatiana Nikolayeva.-

  • That is it. Period.

  • Listen to Martin Stadtfeld, then judge!

  • Astroedic, I can't thank you enough. Your comment has opened a wonderful door for me, that pianist is a new legend and I found him extremely inspirational and a great model to follow as well as pianists like Sokolov.

    Thanks

  • He often plays this as an encore. It always leaves everyone breahtless. Much more in the concert hall, than here.

  • Exquisite.

    What more can I say?

  • It's a bit slow IMO, but he pulls it off beautifully. Much better than Lipatti's version on Youtube, too metronomic.

  • My most appreciated regards to this Great Master. It is impressive the deep sense he has of this piece. There is so much to learn from him, and from his performing.

    Thanks for such beautiful performance.

  • Almost ideal: Gouldian in its less diffusely focussed note shaping and its clearer marking of the vertical/horizontal identities of the contrapuntal terraces; in its understated cantando and expression of emotion by implying its being witheld. GS has, just like G, troubled to rewrite the piece to solve 'impossible' stretches at 2:24 and 2:34 - 2:39 with strictly 'in-time' markings-up of these moments into new, agogic, ornamental material. B Glemser is superb!, but no consistent underlying pulse.

  • Your comment is almost longer than the music...

  • Bach started to really touch me after seeing Gould's performance of "Goldberg Variations, 1981" - so it strongly depends who plays Bach and how it is played to feel the touches... ;-D

  • I don't like bach( doesn't touch me ...) but this guy tells me more than horowitz. That's impossible !!!

  • Bach doesn't touch you? Wow - don't close your mind to it man - you have a world of music that you can still learn to experience.

  • A beautiful piece of music

  • This man is a truly transcendant artist. Bravo!

  • Antonio, this is the Kempff transcription of Ich ruf zu dir. :)

    Fabulous, nevertheless!

  • It may also be Reger's transcription

  • no its the Sokolov transcription ... he told me. He plays it for me sometimes if I ask nicely.

Quel talent !
