His answer to the torture question bugs me...but I get the feeling he was either trying(and failing) to dodge the question or failing to understand the depth of it and the extent to which music as torture can effect people.
@LuigiFanatic I think he was trying to avoid the question. James has even said that politics drive him crazy. He doesn't want politics to take attention away from the music.
@AnchorsAweigh2010 I think so, too. I'd say it was a mixture of a botched attempt at question avoidance(because it can make him look really bad if taken out of context) and James' tendency to go off on a tangent during interviews.

Powerful, physical, natural music based on simple, common ideas..In other words they're REAL. Long may Metallica be ignorant and out of touch,
Can I just remind people that Guantanamo is a PRISON which means the people in there COMMITED CRIMES. So if they are tortured, (personally I don't understand how people can be tortured with Metallica, they are the most amazing band ever) it shows they did something bad.
@CrazyLoop100 Not all of them are. A lot of them were arrested by the US army simply because someone said they were terrorists in exchange for money. You can make a very good living in Pakistan having innocent people arrested by the US army. The americans, being the nice blokes they are, never check the claims or background of the suspect and simply send them to be torture. You should hope the coin never turns and you get arrested and torture being innocent.

that makes the two of us!! ;) I've been listening to Metallica ever since I was a little girl and I'm pretty sure I can go on and on till I die!! James Hetfield is everything!
people have to grow up sometime. holding on to youthful angst can destroy you from the inside out. hats off to james. look at edward van halen for example. great musician. but still trying to be young. i'm guilty off this myself. living in the past etc. but i am learning that it's okay to grow up and mature. without becoming old. while letting go of old youthful habits.
Sorry, James Hetfield, you are saying some really stupid things in this interview. You just don't get it and laugh where laughing is not appropriate. Guantanamo is torture and shame on the former US-government for doing that. There is nothing to be proud of being chosen to torture people with your music.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Yeah i agree with you totally on that. I also hate Hetfield for saying this. How can you be proud of torturing people. For us who like Metallica's music it's not torture, but for another people with different culture it is unimaginable agony listening to it for 10 hours a day. I thought this was democracy. Don't understand why is he laughing.
ok, he was confused about the torture thing. he thought that they just played it at a moderate volume, which isnt torture to me. if theyre still doing that at Guantanamo send me there and i will be happy. but james didnt know that they were playing it a blasting volumes, he thought they played the music just to make them feel uncomfortable. misunderstanding is all.
James Hetfield is very interesting in his honesty here. No matter what questions came up, he never flinched, and answered with a lot of heart and soul. I would be proud to live right next door to this guy and call him my neighbor. Metallica still rocks after all these years. Fine job, guys. Thanks to Pepc616 for sharing this great interview with one of the all-time masters of metal. James is COOL!!!
James is a red blooded, animal hunting, fast car with dirty emissions drivin, drinkin, cussin, spittin, very proud very rich republican man. What do you expect him to say
No he isn't. He has said stuff like "Yeah, I still go to bars, but alot of the time fans are there telling me not too. Just to get the record straight, it's okay I wont go over board I just have one or two, it's fine" Which I've seen him, and sked if it's good to do that. He was cool abotu it and said "Yeah, one or two wont hurt"
yes I did. He drank for most of his life. He went to rehab about five years ago, Ill give you that, but he spent the majority of his life drinking. DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHO JAMES HETFIELD IS???
Good interview, but James' answer on torture by music rather dissapointed me. Like he has never heard about it or doesn't even care... He has faced a lot of things but seeing someone being tortured doesn't seems to be one of them. He should see how people are tortured.
I can awefully say that James disappointed me, Where is 80s and 90s James, who don't care about Politics, just LOUD MUSIC!!!, ur getting old, I think its normal...
I love James, but I didn't like his responses about the torture stuff. I don't think James understands what that kind of torture really is, actually driving people to madness. I think if he actually saw it being done and how serious it is, he would be revolted. And I don't hold it against him that he isn't more aware of it.
I have to admit that I was never the big Metallica fan (although a love Metal music in general) but this interview really shocked me. Well, not the interview in general but the part about Metallica songs being used as a tool for torture. How can he even laugh after the question. Why is he not against torture? I wish him a real life experience of real torture like waterboarding.
Hey thanks for posting this interview (all 3 parts)!!! It's AWESOME that James is courageous enough to expose so much of his inner self these days, allowing us to see his flaws & vulnerabilities...his HUMAN-NESS.
I may not have ever seen this if someone didnt post it here...and I LOVE J.H. to death...so, thank you!!! You've made my day-
lol this isnt a political forum if u think it guys? this is a interview about james hetfield...i dont want to hear political problems when i am listening to an awesome guy like this ok?
Same here, mate. Sometimes I even wonder if I am a Metallica fan or James fan. Maybe I should've joined Hetclub, not Metclub! But seriously, he's been incredibly inspiring for me.

lol torture throo music. how can u be tirture throo music. i wud understand if the ppl were being tortured while using metallica to torture them. but in the end of the day james doesn't give a shit about politics and i don't blame him he has it all why he wanna care some1 else does that he just wants to make music for ppl to love and achieve that if i was him i wud be the exact same
This is a very intresting interview. James really lets the interviewer and viewers know more about the band and their message. Their music does have a universal message or lyrics.
I heard him once answering this question about british intelligence agency using Metallica to torture their prisoners, so I am not sure this thing about Guantanamo is truth or rumo. That's maybe why he doesn't take it very seriously. Anyhow, he only says he is proud that metallica has been picked among other music groups although he is not happy that people are being tortured. In this other interview, he added that he would also go crazy if he was forced to listen to Metallica 24 hours a day...
Guys,I am happy that you also acknowledge the stupidness of his statement. Yes he is naive, but can he afford to be naive? As Indiebot said:Better not to talk about the subject at all. His statement wasn't just about political beliefs, he tied his music to it. That's what's getting to me. As Rolling Stone said, they are the Zeppelin of their generation, their words have impact. We know what human right violations take place in Guantanamo..So shut your mouth James!
OK i will, you're right. I'll go relax. Sure thing. I'll have a walk at the zoo. Maybe see your family. Maybe throw a banana in their cage. Yeah man I'll do that! Thanx for the advice.
It seems to me that James didn't take the torture-aspect very seriously. He doesn't seem to be very interested in politics, so it was probably OK not talk about the issue Guantanamo itself. But his argumentation (if it was meant to be one) about the power of music and so on in this serious context makes him look quite naive and ignorant. The Phil Collins comparison makes it pretty obvious that he didn't really consider the idea of innocent people getting harmed by his music.
But I think he is so much into Metallica and his own life that all thispolitics and stuff doesnt exist in his world.
That could be a reason why he first thought about the music and its power and not the people in guantanamo. I would not call it ignorant or naive though.

Good interview, but James' answer on torture by music rather dissapointed me. Like he has never heard about it or doesn't even care... He has faced a lot of things but seeing someone being tortured doesn't seems to be one of them. He should see how people are tortured.

I love James, but I didn't like his responses about the torture stuff. I don't think James understands what that kind of torture really is, actually driving people to madness. I think if he actually saw it being done and how serious it is, he would be revolted. And I don't hold it against him that he isn't more aware of it.

James Hetfield is the only man on this planet who I would give a sucking too. He's a fucking GOD.
In so many ways

James, imagine my respect is a watermelon. Imagine you just threw the watermelon off of a four story roof and watched it splatter.
You're a huge moron. Torture is a BAD THING.

your respect means shit to anyone, you all are fake fans who just want James to say what you wanna hear, he has his opinion.

Does anyone find it strange that Hetfield completely danced around the question that it is rumored Metallica's music is used to torture prisoners?

The "Mighty" Hetfield...This guy has more heart than I can describe, and has so much depth as a person, I've learned alot from this man, respect!

Same here, mate. Sometimes I even wonder if I am a Metallica fan or James fan. Maybe I should've joined Hetclub, not Metclub! But seriously, he's been incredibly inspiring for me.

hes a musician you dumb fucks..not a politition..go fuckin whine somewhere else..
hes said about 100 fuckin times that he dosnt give a fuck about politics
bleedingme666 3 years ago
That's the problem though. He sees it as just "politics" while it has more to do with "human condition". He doesn't even see that as torture...

lol torture throo music. how can u be tirture throo music. i wud understand if the ppl were being tortured while using metallica to torture them. but in the end of the day james doesn't give a shit about politics and i don't blame him he has it all why he wanna care some1 else does that he just wants to make music for ppl to love and achieve that if i was him i wud be the exact same
SniperTaaffe 3 years ago
Being forced to listen to ( shitty ) songs 24/24 doesn't sound like torture to you ?
TheGlow101 3 years ago 13
Not to mention the volume it's played at. A Motörhead gig is soft compared to what those guys get.

This is a very intresting interview. James really lets the interviewer and viewers know more about the band and their message. Their music does have a universal message or lyrics.
PearlJammer07 3 years ago
I heard him once answering this question about british intelligence agency using Metallica to torture their prisoners, so I am not sure this thing about Guantanamo is truth or rumo. That's maybe why he doesn't take it very seriously. Anyhow, he only says he is proud that metallica has been picked among other music groups although he is not happy that people are being tortured. In this other interview, he added that he would also go crazy if he was forced to listen to Metallica 24 hours a day...
Metalfanmum 3 years ago
Guys,I am happy that you also acknowledge the stupidness of his statement. Yes he is naive, but can he afford to be naive? As Indiebot said:Better not to talk about the subject at all. His statement wasn't just about political beliefs, he tied his music to it. That's what's getting to me. As Rolling Stone said, they are the Zeppelin of their generation, their words have impact. We know what human right violations take place in Guantanamo..So shut your mouth James!
You offend many Metfans!

The Phil Collins comparison makes it pretty obvious that he didn't really consider the idea of innocent people getting harmed by his music.
indiebot 3 years ago 4
I thought the same.
But I think he is so much into Metallica and his own life that all thispolitics and stuff doesnt exist in his world.
That could be a reason why he first thought about the music and its power and not the people in guantanamo. I would not call it ignorant or naive though.
