  • Deepest, darkest, ugliest secrets you have are just poison and are rotting inside you.

    great

  • His answer to the torture question bugs me...but I get the feeling he was either trying(and failing) to dodge the question or failing to understand the depth of it and the extent to which music as torture can effect people.

  • @LuigiFanatic I think he was trying to avoid the question. James has even said that politics drive him crazy. He doesn't want politics to take attention away from the music.

  • @AnchorsAweigh2010 I think so, too. I'd say it was a mixture of a botched attempt at question avoidance(because it can make him look really bad if taken out of context) and James' tendency to go off on a tangent during interviews.

  • i think cliffs names came up alot when metallica were going to split up, i think cliff kept them together for alot of situations

  • 17 people like phil collins more than metallica

  • i look up to james musically and inspirationally more than any other musician, i have so much respect for him and all of metallica

  • How is it Violent? HOW? HOWWWW?

  • His eyes are beautiful :)

  • True. Secrets do rot inside you and consume you. It isn't good. And I hate how the interviewer told him "Why can't you say stop?"... I would be happy to get to listen to Metallica if I was in Guantanamo.

  • 4:49 wat is he talking about? i never heard about it.. was it something big? wat happened?

  • "The deepest, darkest, ugliest secrets you have are just poison, and they are rotting inside of you"

This guy makes the hairs on my neck stand

  • wow he really learned to speak from his heart,

you see it when he closes his eyes (he is vunerable searching his emotions)

and its fucking beautifull to see that side, inspired me to be more open

  • Think first, then talk, legendary Mister Hetfield.

  • @NinjaDriver agreed man. agreed... not thinkin. just once. just once. and totally at the wrong point.

  • I love to listen to james hetfield interviews.. his voice is tranqualizing, if he was in the LOTR movies he'd be gandalf for sure...

  • THEY SHOULD PLAY HOLY WARS IN GUANTANAMO BAY INSTEAD LOL

  • he smiles because he thinks: oh no i´ve to tell again that we are not part of politics. He doesnt want to talk about it...I think sometimes we all behave the same way

  • He's told that "your music used for torture" and his reaction is to grin from ear to ear . . . I mean, with the maximum leeway given to the guy, WHAT a fuckin nasty little dickhead.

  • I almost started tearing up when he said he couldn't live without his family...

  • The leftist interviewer keeps trying to get James Hetfield to talk about politics, but James stands his ground.

  • It goes to tell you how much of religious nuts most of the US army people are that they think metallica is "heavy evil" music.

They probably concluded that after their local church took them to burn the Master of Puppets vinyl.

  • Great interviewer!

  • Well, torture by music is used by the CIA and the US Army since decades and it's not as funny as you think Mr. Hetfield! As you say: If I heard some arabic music for 24 hours straight, I think I go crazy too.

Don't say you got nothing to do with it, you could at least protest; many artists do.

But your not taking it serious at all, do you?

  • James Hetfield will always be a bogan, regardless of how many therapy sessions he does, but that's why we love him in the first place. He hasn't a clue what he's talking about, ( when he talks politics, he's embarrassing} and he sounds like some born again, bogan christian but this is why we love Metallica and their music. Powerful, physical, natural music based on simple, common ideas..In other words they're REAL. Long may Metallica be ignorant and out of touch,

  • I think had better used Megadeth to torture these dudes 'cause Dave is the ultimate anger machine!

  • Can I just remind people that Guantanamo is a PRISON which means the people in there COMMITED CRIMES. So if they are tortured, (personally I don't understand how people can be tortured with Metallica, they are the most amazing band ever) it shows they did something bad.

  • where are you from?

  • those people havent been sentenced by court. they re there to be interogated by CIA,so they re not criminals...they ve been there for reason thou

  • @CrazyLoop100 Not all of them are. A lot of them were arrested by the US army simply because someone said they were terrorists in exchange for money. You can make a very good living in Pakistan having innocent people arrested by the US army. The americans, being the nice blokes they are, never check the claims or background of the suspect and simply send them to be torture. You should hope the coin never turns and you get arrested and torture being innocent.

  • Seeing interviews like this make me realise how much of a role model is James is. It may have taken him years to get there but he's become this incredibly wise man.

  • I couldn't agree more!

  • politics is a corrupt joke.its not worth singing about...especially the democracy....problem is people are fast asleep and cant see this through the fog

  • Cliffs Death practically killed James and the rest of Metallica, just imagine how much he drank its terrible plus him trying to hide his feelings, its ok man you seem like a great man and human being...

  • I'm glad we're making it as uncomfortable as possible for those scumbag prisoners. I shed no tears over those people. You don't win wars by playing nice. You win wars by setting the rules of the game and not playing fair.

It bugs me when I hear people get pretentious and say "America is above that". No we aren't. "Oh...but our founding father would have opposed it" Yeah fucking right. Our founders would be cutting off fingers if they were dealing with these scumbags.

  • listening to millionaire rock stars that made most of their fortunes in the USA, bitch & whine about how these poor, murderous religous fanatics are treated by the military that's doing what it can to protect US citizens disgusts me

    fuck arabs

    metallica rule

metal up your ass u fucking cocksucking terrorists

  • Lol James Hetfield cracks me up.

  • I'm so glad Metallica has their shit together. They're one of my favorite bands. =D

  • why is he going to the "oh were so apolitical defense"?

did he forget "...and justice for all" album or "master of puppets"?

he should at least say that he had different views when he was younger...

  • Those albums are not political. What agenda have any of those albums pushed? There songs are cryptic enough that people of any political belief can enjoy them. Generalized statements like war is bad, or justice is blind are apolitical.

  • 80s metallica were very much influenced by leftist punk bands like crass or discharge

its true they never were a fully political band, but still the songs had some social commentary about hypocritcal authorities, nuclear war ("fight fire with fire") and ajfa was sort of a subtle smash against the reagan regime

the song shortest straw deals about the mccarthy era

dalton trumbo who wrote johnny got his gun,was a marxist and a victim of mccarthyism

  • Man this guy has a heart! =] Damn he's all heavy metal and stuff but deep down he's just a father.

  • @thethingsgopop yes! i wish he adoptd me and was MY father! xD

  • Shut the fuck up u fucking loser, first of all he's gt more pussy than ull ever think of and second u cant even talk about James

  • hey don´t cry! PUSSY!

  • Aww he's so sweet man

  • thumbs up!

  • what are those bands called?

  • Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, Mayhem, Gorgoroth, Iskald, Immortal, Behemoth among others.

  • he didnt say torture was good, he didnt say he was proud of torture, he said he was proud of them using their music as something strong! listen to the man before you make stupid comments

  • man it wouldn't be torture for me if i had to listen to metallica for 24 hours lol.

  • that makes the two of us!! ;) I've been listening to Metallica ever since I was a little girl and I'm pretty sure I can go on and on till I die!! James Hetfield is everything!

  • I love him.. I admire him.. he is my icon, my idol, my God!!

  • same here dude!, i have had god knows how many dreams about meeting metallica lol

  • oh! man.. meeting Metallica!! I don't know.. I've always loved Hetfield since I was a teenage girl.. haha!! it is a total dream indeed!! lol!!

  • people have to grow up sometime. holding on to youthful angst can destroy you from the inside out. hats off to james. look at edward van halen for example. great musician. but still trying to be young. i'm guilty off this myself. living in the past etc. but i am learning that it's okay to grow up and mature. without becoming old. while letting go of old youthful habits.

  • like philll anselmo

  • id imagine its the 4th of september , just because death magnetic was being released around that time ,,, not certain , but just my guess!

  • It was released in May

  • james is bigger than god... fuck off you dick face...

  • bigger than god eh? so james created james and the world, wow, young and dumb

  • In the sense that god does not exist... well, then yeah.

  • He does my friend...

  • nope.

  • deep

  • ok, he was confused about the torture thing. he thought that they just played it at a moderate volume, which isnt torture to me. if theyre still doing that at Guantanamo send me there and i will be happy. but james didnt know that they were playing it a blasting volumes, he thought they played the music just to make them feel uncomfortable. misunderstanding is all.

  • I can't wait to see these guys in September! American Airlines Center, Dallas Texas Baby! YEAH!!

  • 5:00 LOL

  • "Politics seperate people, i want our music to go the other way." God damn, he is amazing.

  • why the hell is he stil playing the old albums then?they had social counscious lyrics

  • Fascinating person. He's seen and done it all, lived more lives than any of us ever will. Handled the difficult questions really well.

  • 0:47...james is so in it!

  • try and torture me with MetallicA lol

  • He doesn't give a shit about guantanamo :D

  • I love Hetfield but he came across very ignorant about the Guantanamo (sp?) bay thing...

  • 5:27 OWNED

  • of course,Grips please

  • what? grips please.

  • 05:34 i am arabic and i love metallica but the hole thing is stupid if they wanted torcher them they make them lestin to black metal not trash

  • it was just an example, not offending one

it was used as another extreem of music opposite metallica

  • james you are my god ty( I'm an alcoholic and yo touched me ty)

  • clever cat that mr james hetfield hes got his head screwed on

  • 07:00 i really love this guy!!! What a answer he gives here!! almost on a "unconscious" level.

  • James Hetfield is very interesting in his honesty here. No matter what questions came up, he never flinched, and answered with a lot of heart and soul. I would be proud to live right next door to this guy and call him my neighbor. Metallica still rocks after all these years. Fine job, guys. Thanks to Pepc616 for sharing this great interview with one of the all-time masters of metal. James is COOL!!!

  • He is a Genius!! Fucking Genius

  • around 7.30 is funny as hell

  • arabic music is fucking awful! it is torture

  • my fav vocalist ... allllllllllll the way from killem all - death magnetic not one bad song from him

  • guys...James Alan Hetfield is GOD!!!!!!!

  • i'll drink to that

  • HAHAHAHA THATS FUCKIN BRILLIANT

  • Coooome on!? Give Hetfield a break. He is right, if u listen to anything enough times it will drive you nuts.

Look at St. Anger...that's painful :\

What if they tortured them with electric shock and they used a battery you made?

    What would you say then?

He said it was all rumor.

  • 00:12

  • james is so fuckin in depth. he is beast

  • The idea the music is TRUE torture compared to what goes on in other parts of the world is RIDICULOUS!!!

    His statements are spot on.

  • James is a red blooded, animal hunting, fast car with dirty emissions drivin, drinkin, cussin, spittin, very proud very rich republican man. What do you expect him to say

  • he doesnt drink...DID YOU EVEN WATCH THIS???

  • he drinks just a little when he's about to hit the stage

    HETFIELD ROCKS!!!!!!!!

  • he went to AA, thats the whole point. not 1, hes sober.

  • No he isn't. He has said stuff like "Yeah, I still go to bars, but alot of the time fans are there telling me not too. Just to get the record straight, it's okay I wont go over board I just have one or two, it's fine" Which I've seen him, and sked if it's good to do that. He was cool abotu it and said "Yeah, one or two wont hurt"

  • yes I did. He drank for most of his life. He went to rehab about five years ago, Ill give you that, but he spent the majority of his life drinking. DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHO JAMES HETFIELD IS???

  • he never says hes republican. im democrat and i drink cuss spit and hunt too

  • you have no clue

  • I have no clue about what?

  • Good interview, but James' answer on torture by music rather dissapointed me. Like he has never heard about it or doesn't even care... He has faced a lot of things but seeing someone being tortured doesn't seems to be one of them. He should see how people are tortured.

  • @zorrokissel

    you know ministry ?

    ministry is the best example

  • I can awefully say that James disappointed me, Where is 80s and 90s James, who don't care about Politics, just LOUD MUSIC!!!, ur getting old, I think its normal...

  • GRIPS PLEASE!!

  • I love James, but I didn't like his responses about the torture stuff. I don't think James understands what that kind of torture really is, actually driving people to madness. I think if he actually saw it being done and how serious it is, he would be revolted. And I don't hold it against him that he isn't more aware of it.

  • James Hetfield is the only man on this planet who I would give a sucking too. He's a fucking GOD.

    In so many ways

  • James, imagine my respect is a watermelon. Imagine you just threw the watermelon off of a four story roof and watched it splatter.

You're a huge moron. Torture is a BAD THING.

  • your respect means shit to anyone, you all are fake fans who just want James to say what you wanna hear, he has his opinion.

  • I will never ever buy a cd from this metallica-shithouse-band again

  • I have to admit that I was never the big Metallica fan (although a love Metal music in general) but this interview really shocked me. Well, not the interview in general but the part about Metallica songs being used as a tool for torture. How can he even laugh after the question. Why is he not against torture? I wish him a real life experience of real torture like waterboarding.

  • sounds like he has conservative leanings.

  • James is amazing

  • Hetfield is the gods gift to our generation!

  • his voice is so authoritive,

he is possibly the coolest guy.. ever

  • "Politics and music don't mix. It separates people, we want to bring people together" Jaymz is the man.

  • the most honest man in this business..

  • You know Hetfield wanted to say, "Fuck yeah, blast those terrorists' eardrums out with Metallica!"

  • Hey thanks for posting this interview (all 3 parts)!!! It's AWESOME that James is courageous enough to expose so much of his inner self these days, allowing us to see his flaws & vulnerabilities...his HUMAN-NESS.

I may not have ever seen this if someone didnt post it here...and I LOVE J.H. to death...so, thank you!!! You've made my day-

  • lol this isnt a political forum if u think it guys? this is a interview about james hetfield...i dont want to hear political problems when i am listening to an awesome guy like this ok?

  • i need a drink

  • Does anyone find it strange that Hetfield completely danced around the question that it is rumored Metallica's music is used to torture prisoners?

  • The "Mighty" Hetfield...This guy has more heart than I can describe, and has so much depth as a person, I've learned alot from this man, respect!

  • Same here, mate. Sometimes I even wonder if I am a Metallica fan or James fan. Maybe I should've joined Hetclub, not Metclub! But seriously, he's been incredibly inspiring for me.

  • hes a musician you dumb fucks..not a politition..go fuckin whine somewhere else..

hes said about 100 fuckin times that he dosnt give a fuck about politics

  • That's the problem though. He sees it as just "politics" while it has more to do with "human condition". He doesn't even see that as torture...

  • man i could listen to james talk all day...awsume

  • Being forced to listen to ( shitty ) songs 24/24 doesn't sound like torture to you ?

  • Not to mention the volume it's played at. A Motörhead gig is soft compared to what those guys get.

  • This is a very intresting interview. James really lets the interviewer and viewers know more about the band and their message. Their music does have a universal message or lyrics.

  • I heard him once answering this question about british intelligence agency using Metallica to torture their prisoners, so I am not sure this thing about Guantanamo is truth or rumo. That's maybe why he doesn't take it very seriously. Anyhow, he only says he is proud that metallica has been picked among other music groups although he is not happy that people are being tortured. In this other interview, he added that he would also go crazy if he was forced to listen to Metallica 24 hours a day...

  • Guys,I am happy that you also acknowledge the stupidness of his statement. Yes he is naive, but can he afford to be naive? As Indiebot said:Better not to talk about the subject at all. His statement wasn't just about political beliefs, he tied his music to it. That's what's getting to me. As Rolling Stone said, they are the Zeppelin of their generation, their words have impact. We know what human right violations take place in Guantanamo..So shut your mouth James!

    You offend many Metfans!

  • You my friend, need a good us army gang bang all the way up your republican ass. You fucking illiterate A P E. I pitty you.

  • OK i will, you're right. I'll go relax. Sure thing. I'll have a walk at the zoo. Maybe see your family. Maybe throw a banana in their cage. Yeah man I'll do that! Thanx for the advice.

    Take care APE!

  • LMFAO!!

  • so true...lol whats with the phantom lord guy?

  • What the hell is rong with all of you?

Why do people feel better when they trash eachother and eachothers family?

    It's immature.

  • It seems to me that James didn't take the torture-aspect very seriously. He doesn't seem to be very interested in politics, so it was probably OK not talk about the issue Guantanamo itself. But his argumentation (if it was meant to be one) about the power of music and so on in this serious context makes him look quite naive and ignorant. The Phil Collins comparison makes it pretty obvious that he didn't really consider the idea of innocent people getting harmed by his music.

  • I thought the same.

But I think he is so much into Metallica and his own life that all thispolitics and stuff doesnt exist in his world.

That could be a reason why he first thought about the music and its power and not the people in guantanamo. I would not call it ignorant or naive though.

  • "But I think he is so much into Metallica and his own life that all thispolitics and stuff doesnt exist in his world."

All that does is make him look like a pampered manchild.

  • You're twenty, I'm sure you have a hard time putting anything of importance into words.
