In classical violin performance, much of what is considered "difficult" in violin is written by composers who by their own admission don't know how to best write for the violin.
Oistrakh (himself a legendary concert violinist regardless of his father's stature) points that out here using both the Sibelius and Shostakovich anecdotes as examples. Shostakovich admitted to not knowing how to write for the violin, and Sibelius admits to not being able to play his own composition!
I have to admit the same with classical guitar performance. Much of the work that is most difficult for the instrument simply is that of transcriptions from other instruments, usually piano/harpsichord, but not limited to those two.
I think he said at the end something like he was 24 when he met Sibelius and Sibelius was 93, so he said to Sibelius he felt he was too young and not mature enough to play the concerto yet, and Sibelius replied: "you're right young man, but don't wait to study it until you are as old as me". The audience: hahaha.
