I have an old one of these i got from a kid for 20 bucks and i have a 180$ TS-808 tubescreamer and the MXR is a much richer rounder friendlier pedal. Try it with a Holy grail....holy shit!!!
Use this pedal with a good humbucker pickup in the bridge position (a DiMarzio Super Distortion would be perfect) and you'll get a good classic '70-ish hard rock/heavy metal sound. ;)
No, i got a Blues Junior, and i use it for any kind of clean, and/or crunchy tones, because that's exactly what it was made for : the circuitry, the speaker are not designed for heavy distortion, and believe me i tried it with a lot of things (Vox Ice 9, Marshall Jackhammer, MXR GT-OD, Tonebone Hot British), and i couldn't get a "good" distortion sound.
Hey man - I bought the original Distortion + (no LED, no AC adapter) in 1980 for around $49-59 new at the great Ithaca Guitar Works. Still use it 30 yrs later. Honestly, I think it sounds just as good and is just as versatile as all the 1001 "boutique" fuzzboxes that cost as much as a small practice amp. I don't get the big deal over distortion fuzzboxes - your main sound should be your amp- I used it for a little color.
actually that particular behringer was quite kool , has a Jensen speaker and killer modelling section, it's all about the player, and what you do with your equipment, ...you equipment snobs suck....practice more and buy less shit!
I bought one of these in 81 or 82 and it had more distortion than this. And I was using a cheap guitar and amp. The one I had you could use a 9V AC adaptor or battery. I loaned it out and never seen it again. Wish I still had it.
I have NEVER liked my 80's box logo, just did the following mod to it, change the .047uf to .068uf to improve the bass response (it adds a little gain), then lower the 4.7k resistor in the distortion circuit to 2.7k for added distortion. Now I have a pedal I can use!
words of wisdom. not even this pedal should be running only through tubes. i have delta lab md1 and it went crappy through my old solid state (i considered to sell this pedal even), but with my new tube amp it goes so sweet and tasty. hope after few days i will get this mxr distortion pedal. yummy. :)
these pedals suck. Im a huge Rhoads fan but I hate this pedal. He used the 10 band EQ pushing mids into it to make it worth using.... I`ve played thru the script, the 8o version, and the reissue.. I think Randy would`ve ditched this thing ..
you don't get it, this pedal can easily be used as lead is you don't use so much distortion. Jerry garcia used it. i think one of the biggest problems with modern rock is they use too much distortion. YOU DON"T NEED THAT MUCH!!
i know but rhandy played in this pedal with a lot of distortion and doestn sounded like thit... this is because he used to play metal riffs and metal things not grunge things... it depend the music you play.
RR didn't played just metal riffs and power chords, he used to play a very bluesy hard rock style. This pedal was made to be used as a gain boost with a FULL TUBE amp, not SS, that's why this sounds muddy. Is great to add a bit of attack and sustain in leads but by itself it´s a crappy sounded pedal. Rhoads mixed this with a Marshall full tube head, that's why the sound is very high gain, but not by the pedal itself. Also the older one used germanium diodes, not silicon like the reissue
@prophetdude2 If they want to have their music have that much, then they obviously feel that they DO need that much. You can't argue how music sounds because it is entirely conceptual. There is no rules or boundaries to how it should be.
It just doesnt sound like it because of the shitty amp used in the demo. Randy would be using aroaring 100w Marshall Stack, which was modified for extra gain. So randy would already have shitloads of gain, then he would boost it with the pedal. Plus the marshall is a better tube amp than this one, so that says it all really =]
So yeah, it IS the same one as what randy used! =] x
It's more for distortion than actual over-the-top gain stuff. Classic rock is good with it, but old metal too. Randy Rhoads used it, but he also used tons of Marshall gain.
yeah i just got it like 2 months ago, and its great. i also bought a phase90 orange*. i think the phase pedal is a bit too harsh, but it gives out more color to the sound
This pedal in front of my marshall, with distortion at 1/3 and volume dimed is THE perfect sound.

Good sounding pedal, but a bit of an advise: Don't talk that much.

This pedal needs to be used thru a tube amp already breaking up, playing this thru a crappy solid state will result in, well the shit you get here
GreenManalishi8151 2 years ago
On its own its an awful pedal
but with a chorus or reverb its awesome
But with a 7 band eq pedal its not the distortion that it previously was lol

the Marshall has little affect to the Rhoads tone to my ears.. it was the 10 band eq pushing the mids into the dist +..and the Altec speakers.
