you should field test, the legendary ontario usgi machete, The 18" blade, For no other reason than it is used world wide and i intend to purchase one in the next few days.
I have stopped buying gerber products completely. Lots of hype and marketing is all they have going for them. I take that back, I have their small folding saw and its fine.
I don't think the steel used to make a good machete blade is the same type of steel used to make a good cutting saw. So your request for a perfect machete that has both seems a little unreasonable. I've been using the cold steel magnum kukri which is basically just a workhorse machete but I like it.
I own the gerber and have the same complaints. But, I gave the gerber gator a good sharpening and now it cuts more efficiently. The saw is a joke for cutting wood. But I found an unintended use for it by swinging the saw side to knock down vines and briers. One other complaint is actually the handle grip.
The handle grip needs to be larger on the back end to prevent slipping.
NOOOO I hate it when people say indian then correct each other and say "native american" i take it more like an insult than anything. how would you like it if all of the sudden people started calling white people in america "european invaders".
What are you talking about, i was able to chop up about 6 full trees into logs for firewood with my cheap $6 walmart machete, it took me about a day of total work, true my hand were fucked after that but atleast i had wood!!!
You should get the ontario machete and try it against the gerber...I think you will like it better...and it would eat the cold steel for lunch...they make it with the saw on the back as well
1 of the advantages of not having the saw on the back is the cold steel machete can cut through wood WITH the grain using another small log hammered on the back of the cold steel machete. Makes short work of a larger job
I just bought the Gerber Machete today (black friday) haven't opened it yet. Gerber used to be a good name, but the last years they have whored out the Gerber/Fiskers brand. the metal is probally allot better grade on the cold steel
The Gerber probably doesn't cut as well because its duller... you can fix this, its called a sharpening stone, you can pick one up for $5 (at most). Cold Steel do make some best knives out there but I don't think you can criticize a knife because YOU can't be bothered to sharpen it. Also native american's never had machete's as they never figured out metallurgy.
Gerber makes good knives. So does Cold Steel. But the latter tends to carry a pompous air about itself. Cold Steel machetes on the other hand suck compared to other machetes. Imacasa, Tramontina, Okapi, and Martindale make better machetes. Sicut, Maranggi, Lookin Sharp, and Valiant Co make excellent goloks, parangs, klewangs, etc.
Native Americans in the Mississippi area, Mesoamerica, and Peru did figure out metallurgy. However, obsidian and flint make sharper edges and were more available. The Incas were using copper and bronze in addition to their stone-based tools.
In non-tropical Americas, the machete, descended from the Spanish cutlasses, really weren't all that useful.
The tomahawk however, was. In the Northeastern Woodlands of North America, the native americans learned how to fix and fashion guns, make tomahawks, and take cut-down European swords and make lances... once introduced to it, many tribes that did not have metallurgy quickly adopted it, like they adopted firearms, horses, etc.
In the tropics, the machete quickly became a prized tool...
also, the girl is a fucking bitch, we don't care if he says indian or cuts down one sapling for the purpose of demonstration, let the men fucking do their review, and don't fucking interrupt them for your fucking pointless whining. next time, leave the bitch at home.
double use? so because it has a pointy tip it's dual use? you are a fucking idiot. why the fuck would anyone chose a pointed tip over a saw blade, it might not be the perfect saw, but it will save you space and weight. the saw is very functional, it's not as efficient, but it WILL cut if you need it to. also, the blade can be reshaped and sharpened, that should never be a point of review.
Thank you very much mam for setting your buddy Dave powers AkA the "Cowboy" straight on a correct term for some one who is from USA and not a immigrant. and Dave if your going to reside in this land that your for fathers decided to join us in cool! but please be respectful, as I will not call you "A redneck cracker trying to survive". really! I do it every day as life & thanks for being considerate. jjkng20
Haha...once again Cold Steel for the win, and one of the cheap models at that. Were it not for the absurdly high price of most of their knives, I'd go Cold Steel all the way, but even with things as they are I'm rebuying another of their chef's knives since mine got lost in my last move. Sure, their prices make you want to punch an infant, but if you can afford them, you definitely get your money's worth.
I know im wasting my time, BUT most machetes have a flat back and not a double edge. I'm just saying. Rubbing the blade and grabbing a sharpened saw is a bit different also.
i think get a hatchet and the gator and you would be better off, if you have bad swinging motion with the other one your arm is gonna get sore really fast and it wont matter how good of a blade it has.
@2:46, the ONLY reason the blade cuts through wood faster than the walfart one or which ever one u used, is cause its SHARPER, not causes its made out of cold steel, thats the ONLY reason, if u sharpin up the walfart brand, it will give u better results as the one at 2:46.........i sharpin mine useing the contrete light post, and that thing is sharper than hell........right now its a 2 maybe a 3 body machete..........
I mean post a video of this magical, 'concrete' sharpened, 3 body blade. Also you must be either really young, a 'troll' or mentally retarded, because no one would make the grammatical errors and comments you just made, unless they had a two digit I.Q..
he said it wasnt ever sharpend well, the machetes from cold steel are rather dull out of the box, plus once u sharpen a cold steel, edge retension is much longer AND its less prone to break and shoot shards of 1055 Stainless steel in yur eye and other parts of u :D
Woodsmans Pal. Check it out. The best machete I have ever used. I have gone through plenty. I could give you all of the benefits but I will let you look at it yourself.
very true mate....machetes are not made for that purpose.....and i think that guy hit that cold steel one faster and now he is singing songs to promote it, I mean how dumb is it....the other machete (gerber) is missing weight...and its too flexible well its good for cutting the kind of wood that he just didn't cut because of the girls interruption or may be he is one of those fools who sucks cold steel balls....i dont know but this video is lame
It's good to see you guys giving your opinions about tools we can use in nature, even better that you talk about the minimum use of destruction we can use against it. I'm glad I watched this video before I purchased a machete, you seem to understand efficiency and comparison quite well. Keep up the good work fellas.
the reason why the sawback isnt that sharp is because its mostly meant for notching. its not meant to totally replace a saw. and if the back of the machete did have really sharp teeth the teeth would get ruined because when u go to split wood u need to baton with the mach. and the hard impacts of the wood on the back would completely wreck the saw on the back of the machete. i have a $12 ontario mach. and it works perfectly. i had to sharpen it but i am able to shave with it. its ridiculous!
wow great show! But you guys should go camping and hiking a lot more lol. And give heavy & realistic survival use to the products your showing... ill be subscribing and fallowing. If you guys need any help or have questions I use lots of gear just give me a holler
wow WTF a critique of a product and you don't want to do a proper demonstration for what the product was designed for because it will hurt nature...Go do something else and don't make videos like this then...
You said it about Cold Steel! All of mine I own are THAT SHARP!!! Great thing about them is they hold a nice edge and it does not take much to put the edge back.
yes, cold steel rocks i have a cold steel bolo on its way, whats kind of cold steel machete is that? whats better a cold steel barong machete, magnum kuriki, or a panga machhete?
your best bet for having a saw for camping or a survival situation is a wire saw. best thing about a wire saw is that with a small amount of ingenuity it can be turned into a bow saw.
no man sorry ill have to disagree. those wire saws are better than nothing but not better than a bahco lapplander. wire saws tend to break easy and they dont bite that deep into the wood... go for a folding saw they dont break as easily
ya see, this is what a damn grinding stone is for. the saw on the gerber is functional enough to save you in survival situation, without slicing your leg. the gerber is extremely stable, it just seems otherwise. i have thrown my gator, ran it over, and cut the crap out of my wal mart machete with it. by the way: "no, stope! that's a living tree!"? WTF hippy. it's a MACHETE review.
These are city kids out playing. The Gerber saw isn't a saw at all. It isn't even cut like a saw and you don't want a saw on a chopper anyway. That's a toy.
use an old lawn mower blade, holds a great edge and has plenty of weight to follow thru with.. the one i've got can cut threw bout 3-5inch branch one swipe..
racoons? lol then leave them alone and just hike if i knew that killing animals was your way of haveing a pleasant hike then i would have never click on your video
i dont have a video and im just saying ive been attacked by racoons randomly before about 6 of them came and tried to get in our tents while we were there racoons are vicious animals it would be nice for a weapon theres other things too maybe you want to stab a hole in a coconut
wow dave that machete with a saw on other side is kind of dangerous dont you think ? and btw i tried the wallmart machete before and for everybody out there, dont buy it that thing bends so easily, after hitting some hard sticks it all got bend, coldsteel is the best.
i have a cold steel machette, and its awesome i was chopping trees and missed and hit a rock, and took a chunk out of the rock so yeah cold steel the way to go
look heres what you want.. if you want to chop get and axe, if you want to saw get a saw, you want to clear get a machete, you want to baton wood get a big knife.. dont waste your money and your time gettin a dual tool.. and if you are worried about packin weight if you are on the trails then just take what you know you are gonna need and leave everythin else at home.. and trust me ive bought plenty of these dule tools and they werent worth nothin..
I cut my own machete out and made my own handle out of hard wood. So far out of three machetes I have bought and making the fourth I will only carry the one I made. The handle was made to fit my hand, second it holds an edge longer then any of the others. I do however like the cold steel machete shown in this video! Guess I might have to look into that one. Great video!
i've had no peoblems with it . granted it needs to be sharpened . but after it been sharpened it holds its edge very will . i also have one of then army has (the name starts with a obut i can tremeber it) and its not up to what the cold steel i got can
an ontario machete is used by the military ,has a sawback version for about 25 dollars come somewhat sharp but you can get it sharp so if i were you id buy it
you swung way harder with the coldsteel barong you stoped when your camera person talked you stop swinging with the gerber, you swung twice as hard with the coldsteel
I use the GI issue pattern machete. Those are really heavy, ie, just ground out from a truck leaf spring. The older ones prior to 1990 seem to have a denser steel that keeps a better edge. These generally do not flex at all, and are not quite as wide as other machetes, reducing the bounce potential. When combined with the old polyvinyl issue scabbard, you have a winning combination.
Don't try to chop through such size wood trunk with the gerber, it's why you get a saw with it ;) I've sort of a wall mart machette myself and i really like it. Had to change it's weak handle though, but other then that i'm sure it would work great. I don't need it yet and am not allowed to carry one by law so.
is this suppose to be funny? because I'm laughing at this, this is funny.

Condor or Tramontina machete and a Bacho Laplander/Kershaw re-brand folding saw are some of the best for the money if you live in the US.

I'm amazed that they didn't even consider sharpening the gerber up...
guiltybystander77 2 years ago
when trying to cut a thick branch, possibly plact the blade on the limb and hit the backside w/ a rock. maybe???? i'm learning too
filoIII 2 years ago
Using a large limb is called batoning. You use a rock and you'll mess up your blade.
guiltybystander77 2 years ago
thanks. that makes more sense

Just worry what is practical for real life use. Many countries use machetes and only care for what they can do.

Machetes are for the jungle and for cutting the grass and leaves and bamboo

Cold steel machetes are tough.
mindfreakpro 2 years ago 3
I cut my own machete out and made my own handle out of hard wood. So far out of three machetes I have bought and making the fourth I will only carry the one I made. The handle was made to fit my hand, second it holds an edge longer then any of the others. I do however like the cold steel machete shown in this video! Guess I might have to look into that one. Great video!
NCHiker1970 2 years ago
Great video! Make more of these! More different machetes! Go, THankS!

mokbrute 2 years ago
i've had no peoblems with it . granted it needs to be sharpened . but after it been sharpened it holds its edge very will . i also have one of then army has (the name starts with a obut i can tremeber it) and its not up to what the cold steel i got can
sinsofvorador 2 years ago
an ontario machete is used by the military ,has a sawback version for about 25 dollars come somewhat sharp but you can get it sharp so if i were you id buy it
dvsport2pku7 2 years ago

TLTlone 2 years ago
I use the GI issue pattern machete. Those are really heavy, ie, just ground out from a truck leaf spring. The older ones prior to 1990 seem to have a denser steel that keeps a better edge. These generally do not flex at all, and are not quite as wide as other machetes, reducing the bounce potential. When combined with the old polyvinyl issue scabbard, you have a winning combination.

coldsteelman777 2 years ago
Don't try to chop through such size wood trunk with the gerber, it's why you get a saw with it ;) I've sort of a wall mart machette myself and i really like it. Had to change it's weak handle though, but other then that i'm sure it would work great. I don't need it yet and am not allowed to carry one by law so.
abdula31 2 years ago
So is there anything wrong with the wall mart one?
abdula31 2 years ago
yeah, it can't hold an edge worth, you can't chop down harldy anything with one, get a tramontina!
vanrickenstien 2 years ago
Dun waste money on it~
Bends, cuts grass, but after a few branches the handle or blade will break ^_- NO LOGS
