I'm gonna go to both Lubbock and Mason City to visit these great places where my idol were born and killed (I don't think "killed" is the right word, but I don't know how to phrase it.) I just know somewhere my life won't be complete if I don't do it.
wow great video. i love all those guys buddy holly/ big bopper/ and ritche valens. but there were way before my time. i was in 1979. but when i was growing up my folks would play music from the 50's and 60's.
I really wish I knew this before up until now. I would of traveled to Clear Lake just to see this place and the gathering of them. Heck I would of brought my guitar and played along to American Pie but that was before I started playing until the end of 2009.
I have been out here many times, live nearby, this is the owner of the property talking at the beginning, it has been in his family now for years..very nice guy and involved with the Surf Ballroom, couldn't be a better land onwer for this site!
There were about 15 of us or so that were out at the Crash site. When I was standing in line to get into the concert, there was a gentlemen next to me who was at the show 50 years ago and he said, "It was alot like this night 50 years ago, only, it was colder back then". The bonfire we had at the crash site kept us slightly warm, but I woke up the next morning and my toes were still cold. it was amazing though, right at the 50 year moment, it got warm for a few seconds...kind of eerie...
The folks who were at the concert 50 years ago, say it was colder that night 50 years ago. Wouldnt have mattered though.. they were gone on impact.....
Yes. As one of the journalists who produced this piece, I can confirm that there was a plane flying overhead at about the same time that the crash would have happened 50 years ago. It was a small plane...probably some people who just wanted to be in the air over the site at that moment. Their own way of paying tribute. But it was an interesting twist and a somewhat weird feeling.
@DMRegister It could have been the ghosts of the men on the plane that night looking over everyone and saying one last goodbye and finally passing onto heaven.
I was at the concert on Monday night. It was @ -10 w/30 mph wind when we left the Surf. I could not imagine people really going out there at that time of night (half mile walk over frozen field, no paved path or lighting; wind chill around -35) but obviously this proves they did.
Great tribute concert to the three lost stars! It was a first but not last time for my wife and I.
If you haven't been to the Surf for this Winter celebration, I strongly recommend it.

Great Listing. The Crash was caused by a Freak Storm that came in very fast. I don't think Roger Peterson caused thr wreck.
FACT: Beechcraft Vtail Bonanza Kills more Lawers and Doctors than any other small airplanes.
Thank you for the listing.
