Very true what you say. It's a normal instinct to try and survive. But, there's always an exception. In Romania's case, we have Bâzu Cantacuzino, top ace, who fighted in the entire war even though he was of nobil origin. The guy was a prince. It was he's choice to fly and fight. Don't want to start an arguement, but in my opinion, a flymen's desiree to be the best should beat the instinct to survive. Sure, it's easy for me to say this.
@razastegaru I think, in history there are only few pilots who wanted to fight from the beginning up to the end .... perhaps Manfred von Richthofen in WW 1 and the Stuka-pilot Hans-Ulrich Rudel. But the most of the other German aces in WW 2 which had scored hundred or more air victories had no choice - they must fly till the bitter end.
This plane reminds me of FW Ta 152, the best German propelled fighter plane of WW2.. Which entered service at the end of war.. However this plane has been developed allready in 1938 which means that 152 (not even mentioning Japanese machines!) must have copied it's design.. long slim nose with slim wings and strong engine.. Well done with this plane.. it is just another proof that Romanians together with Trajan Vuia had tremendoeus impact to avionic industry..
It's true the IAR 80 it's a pride for Romanian Air Force because it's the best thing we got in action with good results on battlefields, true or not we got many aces and with better results than any US fighter pilots on WW2 to not count other countryes, and we have examples Cantacuzino (53), Serbanescu (52), Ion Milu (45) and many others. All were brave fighters no matter for who they fought, no matter the nationality, russians, italians, americans, germans all were brave and we shall respect em
@lerat0 The reason because the American fighter pilots not had reached similar big numbers of air victories in WW 2 was only the fact that they wasn't so long in service on the front like their Rumanian and German opponents. Sure - the IAR 80 is a very fascinating a/c but it never had reached the performances like a Spitfire, a P-51, a Fw 190 or a Bf 109. This is also one reason for accepting the also obsolete Bf 109 E's and the better Bf 109 G's by the Rumanian Air Force, later in the war.

Yes, the design was Romanian, inspired from an older Polish fighter plane. The plane was manufactured at the Romanian Aeronautical Industry factory (Industria Aeronautică Română, short IAR), located in the city of Brașov, central Romania. Some 200 planes were constructed that served the Romanian Royal Air Force throughout the entire War, on the Estern Front, Western Front, as well as defending the Bucharest and the oilfields at Ploiești from Allied bombers.

IAR80 a zburat primul,plus ca intr-un test facut de nemti,IAR a batut FW-ul clar si a iesit putin sun Me109,deci ca s-o spunem pe bune,la inceputul ww2 era un avion mai mult decat satisfacator

nui chiar 100% :p.....Romania avea lincenta in productia de avioane cum ar fi :Potez 25, Moraine-Saulnier 35, Fleet 10-G. Dizainul motorului si partea din spate ( putin cei drept) e luat de la PZL P.24. Oricum e un avion bun...foarte bun chiar...poate cel mai bun din Europa Centrala si de Est. Ne-au cam luat-o rusii la numere...ca in rest MIGU-rile 3 are sovieticilor nu erau cine stie ce...probleme la altitune mare...etc...oricum...5* pt video...;)
Nu mai există nicăieri în lume vreun exemplar de 80/81! Există doar 2 machete 1:1, mai mult sau mai puţin exacte, una la secţia de Aviaţie a Muzeului Militar Naţional şi una la Muzeul Aviaţiei. IAR-80/81 au fost avioane bune la începutul războiului dar erau total depăşite tehnic începînd cu anul 1943, ajungîndu-se ca de la sfîrşitul anului 1944 să fie trecute la misiuni de escortă şi atac la sol.
Au fost eficiente in 1944,cand au pus in aplicare americanii planul "Tidal Wave" dar in aceeasi lupta si-au cam gasit si sfarsitul...nu neaparat ca au fost cateva doborate,dar dupa o asemenea bombardare intensa,avionul nu mai prezenta o siguranta mare fata de alte avioane superioare tehnologic.
"Tidal Wave" a fost în 1943, pe 1 august. Atunci bombardierele americane au venit neescortate, de aceea şi rata de succes a 80-ului. După această misiune, americani au revenit la tactica lor obişnuită, de bombardament de la mare înălţime bombardierele fiind escortate de avioane de vînătoare P-38 şi P-51, avioane superioare inclusiv G-urilor. din dotarea A.R.R.
Să nu uităm totuşi ziua de 10 iunie 1944 când americanii au atacat în zori tocami pentru a surprinde apărarea românească. Bombariderele lor au fost puternic însoţie dar Grupul 6 (echipat exlusiv cu IAR) i-a prins pe amricani la vreo 200 de metri altitudine unde i-a făcut terci. La înălţimea aia nu mai erau atât de evidente discrepanţele dintre avioanele americane şi IAR.
Aia a fost excepţia care confirmă regula. La sfîrşitul aceluiaşi an piloţii refuzau să mai zboare pe acest tip de avion, datorită ratei mare de pierderi. Nu neg că a fost un avion bun în concepţie, dar nu avea cum să facă faţă cerinţelor războiului cînd singurele modificări care i-au fost făcute au constat în mărirea greutăţii celulei fără sporirea performanţelor motorului.

A very interesting video. The IAR 80 and its variants was based on the Polish fighter PZL P.24 but the a/c was obsolete in WW 2.

This plane reminds me of FW Ta 152, the best German propelled fighter plane of WW2.. Which entered service at the end of war.. However this plane has been developed allready in 1938 which means that 152 (not even mentioning Japanese machines!) must have copied it's design.. long slim nose with slim wings and strong engine.. Well done with this plane.. it is just another proof that Romanians together with Trajan Vuia had tremendoeus impact to avionic industry..

It's true the IAR 80 it's a pride for Romanian Air Force because it's the best thing we got in action with good results on battlefields, true or not we got many aces and with better results than any US fighter pilots on WW2 to not count other countryes, and we have examples Cantacuzino (53), Serbanescu (52), Ion Milu (45) and many others. All were brave fighters no matter for who they fought, no matter the nationality, russians, italians, americans, germans all were brave and we shall respect em

@lerat0 The reason because the American fighter pilots not had reached similar big numbers of air victories in WW 2 was only the fact that they wasn't so long in service on the front like their Rumanian and German opponents. Sure - the IAR 80 is a very fascinating a/c but it never had reached the performances like a Spitfire, a P-51, a Fw 190 or a Bf 109. This is also one reason for accepting the also obsolete Bf 109 E's and the better Bf 109 G's by the Rumanian Air Force, later in the war.

Yes, the design was Romanian, inspired from an older Polish fighter plane. The plane was manufactured at the Romanian Aeronautical Industry factory (Industria Aeronautică Română, short IAR), located in the city of Brașov, central Romania. Some 200 planes were constructed that served the Romanian Royal Air Force throughout the entire War, on the Estern Front, Western Front, as well as defending the Bucharest and the oilfields at Ploiești from Allied bombers.

i snot modernized, is rebuild from scratch using some parts of the pzl. the engine is new, airframe new, they used only the tail at some level. the rest, everything was new made. polish pzl was to outdated already at the time.

@blaxblax82 La Brasov aduceau avioane rusesti doborate pentru a vedea ce tehnologie folosesc.Bunicul meu imi spune a ca erau inferioare din toate punctele de vedere.Nici nu intelegeau cum puteau rusii sa zboare epavele alea.
Oricum IAR 80 a fost mandria aviatiei romane.Pacat ca nu s-au mai pastrat sa le aratam si noi nepotilor ca se poate si avem gena sa facem avioane performante.

@qhdh5 I-16 si I-153...alea erau avioane unul era prost manevrabil si unul biplan...abia se facea prototipul la MIG 1 in perioada aceea...IAR 80 a fost din cate siu eu o perioada de cateva luni numarul 2 sau 3 in lume la performate...folosit in lupta pn in 1944 cu diferite imbunatatiri...apoi folosite G-6-uri...si folosit la scoala pana in anii 1950 pana cand comunistii au decis ca reprezinta vechiul regim...aveau si resursa dusa...si le-au distrus pe TOATE...

@qhdh5 Erau inferioare, intr-adevar. Insa din cate stiu eu, rusii aveau cam 25000 de avioane. Asa aucastigat razboiul pe numere, nicidecum pe performanta sau calitate.

A Hollywood production after this heroic operation ( Tidal Wave ) with the support of the Romanian Gov . would be very important for both countries history ...It is still the most decorated single operation ever made by US Army ... 5 Medals of Honour ...RIP all heroes

very nice plane indeed .... in a time when only few could build good planes .. is strange that romanian government never consider to reproduce a functional replica of this plane for air shows but also to be the symbol and pride of the Romanian Air Force ... Is trange in a way that both "actors " of the Black Sunday " Tidal Wave " clash are now extincted ...IAR 80 is not flying any more and B24 LIberators are , as far as I know , only 2 still flying ....

nui chiar 100% :p.....Romania avea lincenta in productia de avioane cum ar fi :Potez 25, Moraine-Saulnier 35, Fleet 10-G. Dizainul motorului si partea din spate ( putin cei drept) e luat de la PZL P.24. Oricum e un avion bun...foarte bun chiar...poate cel mai bun din Europa Centrala si de Est. Ne-au cam luat-o rusii la numere...ca in rest MIGU-rile 3 are sovieticilor nu erau cine stie ce...probleme la altitune mare...etc...oricum...5* pt video...;)

Nu mai există nicăieri în lume vreun exemplar de 80/81! Există doar 2 machete 1:1, mai mult sau mai puţin exacte, una la secţia de Aviaţie a Muzeului Militar Naţional şi una la Muzeul Aviaţiei. IAR-80/81 au fost avioane bune la începutul războiului dar erau total depăşite tehnic începînd cu anul 1943, ajungîndu-se ca de la sfîrşitul anului 1944 să fie trecute la misiuni de escortă şi atac la sol.

Au fost eficiente in 1944,cand au pus in aplicare americanii planul "Tidal Wave" dar in aceeasi lupta si-au cam gasit si sfarsitul...nu neaparat ca au fost cateva doborate,dar dupa o asemenea bombardare intensa,avionul nu mai prezenta o siguranta mare fata de alte avioane superioare tehnologic.

"Tidal Wave" a fost în 1943, pe 1 august. Atunci bombardierele americane au venit neescortate, de aceea şi rata de succes a 80-ului. După această misiune, americani au revenit la tactica lor obişnuită, de bombardament de la mare înălţime bombardierele fiind escortate de avioane de vînătoare P-38 şi P-51, avioane superioare inclusiv G-urilor. din dotarea A.R.R.

Să nu uităm totuşi ziua de 10 iunie 1944 când americanii au atacat în zori tocami pentru a surprinde apărarea românească. Bombariderele lor au fost puternic însoţie dar Grupul 6 (echipat exlusiv cu IAR) i-a prins pe amricani la vreo 200 de metri altitudine unde i-a făcut terci. La înălţimea aia nu mai erau atât de evidente discrepanţele dintre avioanele americane şi IAR.

Aia a fost excepţia care confirmă regula. La sfîrşitul aceluiaşi an piloţii refuzau să mai zboare pe acest tip de avion, datorită ratei mare de pierderi. Nu neg că a fost un avion bun în concepţie, dar nu avea cum să facă faţă cerinţelor războiului cînd singurele modificări care i-au fost făcute au constat în mărirea greutăţii celulei fără sporirea performanţelor motorului.

We don't have an alliance with Czechoslovakia. Wen we fight whit CCCP in 1918-1920 Czechoslovakia invaded Poland and take Zaolzie. So we take Zaolzie when Hitler attack Czechoslovakia. We have proverb in Polend. "How God do to Qba, Qba do idem to God"
