It probably considers the cat part of the pack, just like it considers the family part of its pack. Its not in the dog's nature to 'rip the cat apart', although of course it could. I love cats and I own a fairly large gray tom cat, but I do know quite a few real life stories at just what the cute little kitty is capable of doing if the cat so chooses to. Imagine having a bad migraine and then having to go to a 5 year old's birthday party.
